I have a small child and when I go on vacation I write my phone number in permanent marker on the back of his leg. It stays on most of the trip, and it isn't in the photos. When its cold, I put my phone number on tape and put it on his back.:)

That's a good idea if your child is able to point out to rescuers that the number is there, but I would be afraid no one would notice it.

Its funny you say that, because while we were at Disney last year, everyone was pointing at my sons leg. I guess I wrote it REALLY big!:rotfl:

Thats not a safe thing to do put your numbers so strangers to see put it where strangers can not see

I was concerned about a lost child on our last trip. DD was 2 (almost 3) and DS was 4. DS has a habit of wandering off. We ordered dog tags for both kids. We included "call if found", our cell numbers, "my name is ____", and "nut allergy" (on DS'). We talked to the kids about finding someone with a name tag if they could not find mommy or daddy, etc. They wore the dog tags & kept them inside their shirts during the day, and at night we kept them with the stuff that went to the parks.

Fortunately, we never needed them at WDW. We have used them for other outings - zoo, Incredible Pizza, etc.

I took the kids to a friend's bday party at Incredible Pizza one day. As I mentioned, DS likes to wander off - in this case to play games instead of waiting for little sis to finish playing a game. Several times we would catch up to him at a game. Once, we didn't. He apparently tried to find us where he left us and we were trying to find him. I saw him as I came around the corner of a game - pulling his dog tag out of his shirt & trying to get the attention of an employee! I was quite proud that he remembered & didn't freak out!

We are planning another trip, and the dog tags are already on my packing list!

Good luck!

You can get seperated at any age. We have a designated meeting place at all of the parks. We use Walt's statue in front of the castle at MK for example. Was very happy to find one of my lost children a couple of years ago at the statue!

My youngest son DS3 has autism and he does best with the safety tats. He won't let me write on him and he likes the tatoos-they stay on really well even after swimming and baths. We put the safety tats on his arm. The tats I have for him read, "I have non-verbal autism" and my cell phone number.

Another safety thing I do with him besides a back-pack leash (that baby ain't goin' no where!) is buy the brightest shoes I can find. He likes crocs so I will get him pairs that are red or neon orange. This way I can see his feet in a crowd by looking down since he is little and there is no way I could find him around a tall group of adults.

Have fun, be safe everyone!

No, its not a danger to put your phone number out there, what IS a bad idea is putting your childs name on their shirt. A predator can call them by their name, tricking them into believing they know them.
If some weirdo wants to call my phone number, so what, it will not benefit them.

You are ok with putting you phone number on the child as long as the number is unlisted. If it is listed then all they have to do is google the number and they know where you live. I think the dog tag idea is brilliant. There are several stores in DTD that have custom dog tag machines. You could get a Disney dog tag...

Is that all you have to do to get a persons info from their cell phone number? I have tried and tried to get info from peoples' cell numbers, but I have not been able to get info from the internet [for free]. I'm going to try that in the future.

Great idea, the dog tags. you can get them at many Walmarts and of course pet stores. I used to lace the tags on my kids sneakers, all the way on the bottom so they wouldn'y fall off when the shoe was untied.:goodvibes

My DS was 3 almost 4 the first time we went to Disney. :) We had one of those sillicone livestrong type bracelets made with MOM and my cell # and DAD and my DH's cell#. When he was small he wore it on his ankle (shoes prevented it from falling off.) Now that he is 9 he wears it on his wrist. We still use it when we will be going to crowded locations. It was about $9.

Where do you get these tatoos? I work with children who have autism and I would love to be able to tell their parents about these. Thanks!

Cell phones may be different because they technically are transient. I don't know. Mine is unlisted so i can't search for it to check it out. It only says it is a cell phone based in Philadelphia, which is actually not correct... I do know if I google my home number up comes my address and how many people live in the house. It is very disturbing. So i don't know what you can find if you pay for a service... There is just way too much information on the web and all of which you have no control over. I do like you idea and i am not saying there is anything wrong with it but disturbed people are so motivated you just can't anticipate what they will do.

I bought some write-on ones (like a sticker) online at www.safetytat.com. I haven't tried them yet though. The regular "tatoo" types ones can be custom printed. They have several ones for autism under "Original Safety Tats" then "Special Needs".

I was going to order the tattoos myself for our trip this year with my neice and nephew, but on our last trip to Disney I saw something I'm going to try to copy.

I agree that the telephone number being big enough for the world to see can lead to more personal information being found, but that involves a bunch of "if" scenarios. I wouldn't do it but thats me.

What I do not agree with is the kids names being embroidered on everything and shown big as day on their bodies. Its not imporatant for an adult helpful or not helpful to know your KIDS name, they should know their PARENTS name so they don't go with the wrong people claiming your children.

The kids we saw had little ID tags on their lanyards with a picture of their parents with their parents name name and number. I thought that was great. What is worse than your children getting lost? Having someone else claim them and no one think anything of it to stop them. :sad2:

I just googled my cell phone number (no point writing your home number on your child's leg unless you're sitting at home while he's at WDW) and came up with a lot of hits for reverse number lookup sites. All narrowed it down to my city, but that's as far as they got - no name or address was associated with it.

You are right. One of the best things I've learned for my kids' safety is to leave their names off their shirts and such. I teach karate, and often teach self defense seminars and such. Some of the things predators do to find victims are unbelievable. I like the dog tags idea, coupled with a daily picture, and also your tip about the parents' pictures. I will have to think on that and see what I come up with. With 5 children, I am always nervous in crowded places, and even avoided places like the mall when they were young unless I had extra hands to help me. My three older children will have cell phones this year, so that's a bonus. I will still make sure they have what they need to be safe. Thanx for the tip.
