Hello out there in DISboards cyberspace!

I have done my fair share of thinking (and panicking) about my health. My family has a history of Diabetes and high blood pressure and I am WAY TOO YOUNG to be worrying about those medical horrors (I'm 19).

The 5 W's and the H questions:

Who: ME (silly)! 19 year old college student with free time, tons of family and friend support, and a gym membership.
What: Lose 100lbs (safely)
When: Starting now, looking to reach my goal in ONE year.
Where: Southern California where the weather is very nice
Why: I really want to visit Disney World again but I don't want to worry about huffing and puffing all the way through. Nor having to buy UGLY summer clothes because all the cute clothes is made in smaller sizes. But most of all, I want live a LONG and HEALTHY life.

HOW: Keeping my calorie intake at 1600, cardio workouts 5 days a week for 1 hour minimum and gradually including weight training 2-3 times a week.

Welcome to WISH!

Congratulations on taking the first step!! it sounds like you are doing great! I know it is a hard road. I am very much in the same boat as you. It finally took me to 30 to finally get the message to start doing this for myself and my husband so I can be with him along time.

I would like to do this with you if that is OK. I am always looking for more people to be inspired by.:cool1:

Also, just a FYI moment but I grew up in Glendale and now I live out in Long Beach. Also, I have over 100 to lose. If you would like to help keep each-other going I am all for it!:thumbsup2

Keep on going and all the best in your endeavors. It is a very supportive place around here so keep coming back.:grouphug:

It is really excellent that you are doing this!

The only thing I would add is that your health will improve a lot long before you lose the whole 100 pounds. A loss of 10% of your starting weight should dramatically lower your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. Losing 10% of your starting weight plus exercising should help even more.

I have struggled with my weight my whole life. I have also been as much as 100 or so pounds overweight. At one point, I lost 40 pounds, and even though I was still 60 pounds above the top of the "normal" range for my height, my doctor told me that at that point, the remaining weight was really just a "cosmetic problem" -- I had lost what I needed to lose for health reasons. In fact, my average blood sugar level dropped by almost half when I lost the 40 pounds, all the way from a very "uncontrolled" diabetic level to the middle of the "normal" range.

Unfortunately, I gained that 40 pounds back, but I have just about taken it all off again. This time, I don't even plan to try to get all the way down to "normal" -- I just want to maintain a 40 pound loss.

HI disney-inspired! I'm a socal resident as well and I'm always on a mission when it comes to eating right and exercising! If you're looking for some local support feel free to PM me!! Also, have you thought about registering for the Disneyland half marathon??? Its not until September and it would be a great goal to work towards: walking your first half marathon and earning an amazing castle shaped medal!!!

Welcome and congrats on taking the first step!
This is a fantastic place for encouragement, tips, advice and even some great recipes.

This a great encouragement. Yes, the 100lb mark is a daunting task but knowing that losing even just 26lbs will make me healthier is great!

Hi everyone!
Thank you all for the great encouragement.:thumbsup2

Let see, I just finished a successful 4-day workout week. We had my sister's 8th birthday party yesterday and I had spaghetti (ahhhh!) and cake (AHHHHH!) but Today I have done very good considering it's Sunday. This is the day we usually eat like there is no tomorrow. Sadly, there is always Monday right after it :lmao:

I don't even want to think about Saturday
but today I have had:

(2) Cracker & cheese snack - 200 cal
(1) Capri Sun - 100 cal
Denny's grilled chicken sandwich, applesauce, hot chocolate - 650 cal
(I know it's a bit high but it was low compared to everything else they had!)

So that's it so far.
Lately, I will be up watching tv at night and I feel like I'm starving! I eat a couple times a day so I know I'm not lacking calories. Then I realize, I'm not drinking enough water! So here come the tally marks. Sometimes I can't stand drinking just water so I put unsweetened, natural cranberry juice in it to give it a kick! [Plus its a great detox!]

I am a bit behind in my exercise minutes but I plan on working out the full 60 minutes now since I already have a week under my belt :goodvibes

As for encouragement, my whole family is being greatly supportive.

I am using the Disneyland/CHOC walk in November as incentive to become physically fit.

As my reward for losing weight and saving money, I plan on going back to Disney World in January 2009. My parents would rather go to Cancun, so I have to find a buddy (or buddies) to go with me. I just feel sad thinking about being by myself at Disney World. I think I would be somewhere in the World and I'll remember some trivia or really enjoy something and then I'll turn to tell my sister, mom, dad, etc about it and no one would be there.

I think it would be a great experience for me to attend an all girl's trip to WDW. Of course, they would have to be willing to go with an under-ager. I'll be 20 by January but still not of legal age to drink. So I'm trying to get my cousin and friend to go but I don't know if they are serious about joining me. I don't care about age as long as these girls, or women, are (preferably) Christians or good, clean-fun kind of people. I hope no one will take this as I'm a religious nut because there is a difference between being religious and having your spiritual life intertwined with your daily life. For example, I don't look down on people who drink or smoke because it's their choice. Sure I don't think smoking is healthy and I wouldn't do it (asthma!) but I'm not going to judge you. I don't know about other Christians, but when I turn 21 I plan on trying wine. It's a big misconception, drinking is not a sin BUT getting drunk is; that's a big difference.
Ok, ok I'll get off my soapbox per se. I just had to clarify.

ANYWHO, I have to save at least $1000 dollars to have a nice stay. I went for a week (my first time) in 2006 but I was with my family and they slowed me down A LOT and I didn't get to see half of what I wanted.

I think that's all for now, I have to do some shopping for my sunday school class (yes, I teach little ones) and homework!
I'll be ready to transfer to a university at the end of this semester so I think I'll be going to CSU Fullerton. It's only 15 minutes from Disneyland!

Cristabel, I'm so glad to know that you are sticking with the plan and that you have support there.

Stay focused! You are doing it.

You might want to consider starting a journal of sorts in the WISH Journals thread linked at the top of this WISH forum. It will be there for your daily comments and in a year when you have traveled that road, you will be amazed at your journey and can encourage others through your success.

Come here often, help others by sharing your encouragement and story and I'm sure you will stay motivated.
