time was 11:42, four minutes after I posted ;)

4:09 UPDATE: 5.4 on the Richter scale, 2 miles SW of Chino Hills, 7 miles deep, 34 aftershocks (strongest was 3.6),

Only minor damage so far, including some to runways at Ontario and John Wayne airports.
Cal State Fullerton reports some broken windows and cracks in buildings.

In Los Angeles, 5 minor injuries reported; some people were stuck in elevators
A few minor injuries reported in Brea.

omg really?
i was just sitting here and felt something now my head hurts but im not watching the news im watching passions lol
i have felt earth qakes before i just dont know how strong they are. is 5.6 big

epicenter is Chino, which is NorthEast of Disneyland, 26.1 miles driving distance, but looks like maybe 20 miles as the crow flies

This was a significant quake, assuming 5.8 is correct, but hardly the Big One. The Northridge quake of 1994 was a 6.7, and I have a crack that runs parallel to my bed on the ceiling as a souvenir.

blatantly stolen from Wikipedia
a difference in magnitude of 1.0 is equivalent to a factor of 31.6 ((101.0)(3 / 2)) in the energy released

I hope that everyone that felt the quake is safe and sound. Hopefully there is very little damage, and everyone is safe, sound, and accounted for. Sending you fairy dust and best wishes that everyone is ok.:tinker: :grouphug: :grouphug:

:grouphug: :grouphug: Oh My gosh. Earthquakes are so scarey. You have no controll for what seems forever. I worry about drving and there being an earthquake :(. I hope no after shocks. I was in Hawaii when there was a quake on Big Island that shook us on Oahu --(24th floor :( scarey for sure). Have be thru 2 small ones in my home state. Seeing the land look like a wave and not being able to stand up is not fun. I just hope all the ppl living there are all ok. :grouphug:

We felt it here in San Diego - it was a gentle shake but it went on for quite a while...and for us to feel it like that down here it has to be pretty significant. :-( Unfortunately I expect there will be a lot of damage...hopefully no injuries/loss of life, though...

They are evacuating all the rides/bldgs at Disneyland. They just showed it on tv. Even evacuating the Disneyland Hotel for inspection

Hopefully they dont find any damage!

5.8 is a pretty good size one. Hopefully, everybody is okay. I lived there during the Northridge and Landers/Big Bear.

I know a lot of folks don't pay attention to earthquake safety when they plan DL vacations. However, I do think that the GCH is a much better design for quakes (all of those nice arts and crafts beaming are really painted on steel beams that are reinforced and seem much more for quake safety) than the DLH.

Big jolt here in Riverside. Was right by DLR yesterday, used my nav system and my house is 44 miles from there. Exit for Chino Hills about 1/2 way home. After the big jolt lots of rolling. I was upstairs, kids downstairs, so I am sure I felt it more. They were slightly fazed, more freaked out by my reaction!

No damage here, things shook, but nothing fell.

Re: GCH being safer: DLH was certainly built before the Sylmar quake (1972?) and perhaps so was PPH. They may have been retrofitted, but I wouldn't expect them to be as earthquake-resistant as structures built after the building codes were strengthened.
