My husband and I are looking into buying about 50 points through resale and I would appreciate any advice anyone who has done that can give us. What resorts do you recommend? Do you have problems making reservations at resorts other than your home resort. We do not have any children yet, so right now, it's just for the two of us.

Thanks for any hints and tips you can pass along!

Hi Jen: I'm a newbie here and had planned to look at the resale market to purchase about 50 pts. I ultimately just signed a contract for 100 pts. at SSR at $82 pp. I don't know if I'm going to clear ROFR, but I'm hoping.

We wanted to go resale b/c we wanted to start with fewer points and not take as much risk on our contract. Since I've been looking at the market, I realized that contracts with fewer points go much faster. (people with more points can't break up their contract and can only transfer the whole amount).

As for the resorts...well, different people have different views of the resorts and I'm sure there are experienced DVCers who will have a lot more to say. I know that the most expensive pts to purchase are for BCV and I think its because BCV has an awesome pool and location. I have 2 friends who are DVCers and both have been able to stay at the different resorts (including BCV). (But I think it depends how flexible you are in terms of dates and room types. I think certain room types are much harder to get.)

Anyway, good luck on your journey. :) Amy

We bought a small OKW contract in 2005 and have loved it. We love the "small" commitment and it has served us well with banking, borrowing and transferring in points as needed.

My best advise is to use the board sponsor and get on their calling list for small contracts. You have to be prepared to say "YES!" when they call, or they'll move down the list and find a buyer, often within an hour of receiving the small contract for sale. We got on the list and I think it only took about 6 weeks to get the contract we want.

My other major piece of advice is to offer ABOVE what Disney is ROFR'ing. There is no sense going through the headache of the entire process to end up disappointed. The $2-3 more per point you'll pay (so $50-$150 more total for a 50 point contract) is a very, very small price.

As for resorts, I always suggest actually visiting them all. I did this before we bought on a trip, and fell in love with OKW right away. I think it is so individual. But, also remember with a small contract, OKW requires the fewest points, so you get more mileage out of your contract.

Good luck!

FYI, since OKW requires fewer points to book stays, it might be the best value for a small contract

i recently bought 40 pts at OKW. haven't tried making reservations at other resorts yet, but based on what i've learned at the DIS, i'm not counting on being able to do so...but i'll probably reserve at OKW next year and at least see if it's possible to switch at 7 months (AKV looks pretty cool to me)...or maybe skip the parks and head to vero beach...but i digress...

i would recommend getting a contract for 55-60 points if possible - even though it might be a longer wait - to pay for 5 weeknights at 11 or 12 points a night (necessary for SSR or the more expensive studios.)

i agree with the rest of the advice here also: call the board sponsor and get their mailing list. have your money in order and be ready to say yes immediately when the right type of contract comes along...smaller contracts are often snapped up quickly.

i have only stayed at SSR (i rented last year) so it's currently my favorite resort ( :cloud9: ) although i have seen a room at OKW and look forward to staying there. but different resorts appeal to different people, so definitely do some research in the review threads and try to figure out which one is best for you...and if you can visit WDW and see the resorts and the models (only for AKV, SSR and BWV) - then that's even better.

obviously, i agree.

in addition to studios costing only 8 points a night, point costs are relatively low (mid-80s for a small contract, although it seems to be trending a little higher) and maintenance fees are pretty low.

but i'm happy just to be onsite at disney. if you were to hate having to stay at OKW (i.e. wanted something more like a hotel or something closer to epcot or MK), then it's better to pay a little more for one of the other resorts.

Just a question: Everyone mentions the sponsors' call list or email list. I called the sponsor and spoke to one of their DVC agents. He put me on his email lists and I get emails from this agent. Is this what you mean or is there some automated news letter from TTS?

Amy, if you're looking to buy a contract for under 100 points, you might want to also get on the call list. A lot of smaller contracts never make it to the announcement stage, since there's a waitlist for them. The sales agents go through the waitlist first, and if no one wants the contract, then it's announced to the public.

I just spoke to someone at the resale site. I asked if I could be contacted when something I wanted was available. He told me to just look at the email of listings that's sent out. He never mentioned a list. Is the list something that's only offered directly through Disney?

I recently bought a 25 pt contract for OKW through another (not the board sponsor) resale agent.

You can try other agencies that may have what you want right away.
I called TSS and they did not have any 25 point contracts immediately available... but GMAC had 25 and 50 available at the price I wanted to pay...

We are so glad we did!

I'm looking into doing the same thing, we are don't have any children either and love disney world. We are thinking if we buy a small contract we can at least go down every couple years untill we can afford to buy more points, I looked in buying points right from disney but we would have to finance most of it.. I figure if every couples of years I just buy a small contract I can save myself tons in interest instead of financing it..
We are going down in Sept, and are going to check out all the resorts and decide from there... (Really its to convince my DH ;))
And with just two people the studios are more than enough room I think, Untill we have kids I'm not worried about having the grand villa!! although I bet they are cool!!

BWV is another nice option since you can book the standard rooms for the same price as OKW. Plus, it's easier to book OKW at 7 months than BWV. Personally, I love the ability to walk to Epcot and MGM, plus the general fun of the boardwalk atmosphere.
