I have lived on the same street for the past 8 years. We usually have 1 or 2 yard sales per year and they have been very successful. Last year, however, the person who organizes the sale decided to have it on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. I did not think that was a good idea but the majority of people thought the date was ok but we did not have a good turnout.

She just sent out an email and is again looking at the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

What do you think of this day for a yard sale? I'm not sure if last year was just a fluke or if that truly is a bad day for yard sales.

Around here, not very many people hold yard sales on holiday weekends.

Where I live Thursday thru Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend is prime time for yard sales. 2nd choice would be the July 4th week.

I wouldn't do it on Memorial Weekend, a lot of people go out of town. I am having mine May 16-17 this year. Some people are confused by Memorial Day Weekend this year because it is early, maybe she doesn't realize that the 24th is Memorial Day weekend. I know I scheduled something for Girl Scouts on May 31st and I had three parents chewing me out because it was Memorial Day Weekend and they were busy, but in fact, it is not. Maybe she doesn't realize?

When we have our yearly yard sale in NJ we don't have it on Memorial Day weekend, we try and stay away from the 3 day weekends with people going out of town.

I love yard sales and usually don't go on holiday week-ends... there don't seem to be as many to choose from for one thing (maybe that's why they're having it then? not as much competition???), plus we do sometimes go out of town. I don't like to have them on holiday week-ends either b/c traffic does seem slower. We're having our neighborhood sale next week-end and I'm hoping to make some Disney money!!!

Holiday weekend sales are not a big thing here either. The best turnouts are when there are other things going on in town - like a fair or festival - which attracts out of town people. Maybe just tell her you tried it last year and the turnout was not as good as it could have been, lets do it on this weekend instead.

our town is like a ghost town on holiday weekends. You will see a few sales, but for the most part its a bad weekend.

I wouldn't hold a yard sale on a holiday weekend.
Our development did 1 year, and it was a bust.
Weekend before or after would be much better....

Can you tell her that date is not good for you and that you will have your own yardsale the week prior? Once that word *quietly* gets out, more people might decide to share that date with you. ;)

Holiday weekends are not as good here either. Last year we made $200 less than our vacation goal....so I stayed open on Sunday (Thursday is garage sale day here and no one comes on Sat). By 12:00 I had been opened since 10:00 and sold an additional 250.00 so we closed! We have career garage salers around here, so anytime is pretty good. Our city also breaks into areas for neighborhood sales (the $10.00 fee is waived). Our part has a city employee and he hates garage sales so we haven't had one in 5 years. So a neighbor organized our own neighborhood garage sale with around 20 houses it turned out to be a great idea! Tons of traffic.

I organized our neighborhood yard sale for the Saturday of Labor day weekend last year, and we did well. I think it depends on your area, though.

Here, all the kids go back to school the Wednesday after Labor Day, so that might have something to do with it.

When we lived in a larger city, garage sales were never on a holiday weekend. Now that we've moved to a more rural area, the holiday weekends seem to be prime sale date, but so far I've never been able to shop them since we usually are out of town.

We live in a tourist area and Memorial day weekend is huge for yards sales around here. We held one a few years ago and last year we spent the day going to them.

I am a die hard garage sale'er. I will say this, Around here Thursdays and Fridays are garage sale days.Saturday is so-so. And sunday, u will never find them.

On Holiday weekends, I do NOT hit garage sales. They are usually lack luster.

I never thought Thursday and Friday would be good for yard sales - being people are at work or taking kids to school etc. I'm going to keep my eye out now and see if its popular around here.

Where I live it doesn't seem to matter what day you have it on. Last year I had one and for 2 days and barely made enough to cover the ad in the newspaper and our permit fee, total $35. It was a really bad year. I am hoping to have one again, but am moving to my mom's house. Hopefully this will make a difference. Good Luck !!
