So we are preparing to embark on our yearly pilgrimage to Florida this Christmas and I'm looking for a couple good books to download. On our last trip we listened to all three Kingdom Keeper books and really enjoyed them. It made the drive from Michigan fly by. I wanted to get one of the Harry Potter books for this trip but you can’t download them from Audible.

I was wondering if you all had any other suggestions for teen friendly books.:thanks:

I am a reading teacher and have tons of ideas, but what types are you looking for? Fantasy, mystery, historical fiction?

I have two girls and a boy ages fifteen, thirteen, and eleven. They like both fantasy and mystery books (they have read all of the Rick Riordan series and loved them).

The Kingdom Keepers books were a big hit so something like that works well.

I really enjoyed the Xanth series when I was younger but those are not available in audio book.

The Peter and the Star Catchers series, also by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, is terrific! There are 3 books in the series and they form a "prequel" to Peter Pan.
All are available on Audible (that's where I got them :thumbsup2)

1-Peter and the Star Catchers (1 file, 8hr 40 min)
2-Peter and the Shadow Thieves (2 files, 11 hrs total)
3-Peter and the Secret of Rundoon (2 files, 10.5 hrs total)

I think you'll all really enjoy them.

Terry Pratchett's "The Wintersmith" is my teenaged daughter's favorite audiobook. She has listened to it several times, and she said it is very well performed. His other books are good too, according to her. (She is into fantasy).

Most of the 39 Clues books are available on Playaway, etc. Those would be appropriate for teens/tweens. The Name of this Book is Secret is lots of fun. We just picked up Science Fair and Holes at the library this afternoon for our Thanksgiving driving. We like to get a copy of the book as well so the boys can read along with the CD.

Good luck!

My kids loved all the Harry Potter on audio CD as well as the Eragon series.

The Hunger Games series are good but the futuristic subject matter might be a little heavy for preteens if there are any in your car. My teen loved the City of Ember series too but I'm not sure if they are on Audible.

I teach 7th grade and my students are in the 12-13 year old range. The Hunger Games is very popular. It is completely riveting and the series is highly addictive! It is a touch futuristic and does have dystopian elements, so that might be a bit heavy for a car trip.

Other books series that are popular with my students include:

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Cirque Du Freak books are also very popular with my kids.

My kids love Rick Riordan as well. Have they tried his new Red Pyramid series? The first book is already out and one per year will be released. He also wrote a few of the 39 Clues books.

Here are some others that are similar to Kingdom Keepers...

Chronicles of Narnia
Animorphs series
Haddix series

Here are some that are similar to the Percy Jackson series...

Inkheart Triology
Charlie Bone series
Maximum Ride series
Peter & the Starcatchers series
Fablehaven series
Cooper Kids Adventures series
Warriors series
Bone series

They also just released a graphic novel version of The Lightning Thief. My kids are enjoying reading it even though they've gone through the original novel dozens of times.

You can find descriptions of all of these books on scholastic.com. :teacher:

They're making a movie out of the Hunger Games. So it might be nice for them to hear the books before seeing the movie.

Sayhello

Maximum Ride by James Patterson is also very good sci-fi, not his usual murder mystery genre. Movie on it's way.

Your teens probably already asked you to get the Hunger Games trilogy for the drive, if they haven't already asked you to get them the books! I have read the first two books; probably the best YA books written in the past ten years. In other words, these are great books for everyone.

Hi Everybody...Just wanted to say thank you for all of the advice. I think we are going to try the Hunger Games series.

Great choice! btw I made it through Volume 19 of the Xanth series before it got to be too much. Did appreciate the Florida flavor of that series though.
