Looking for some good books

If you don't mind violence, profanity and hot sex....you might enjoy the JD Robb "in Death" series, it is Nora Roberts psuedonym.

I love anything by Linda Howard, but "Mr. Perfect" is a fave.

I also enjoy Christine Feehamns " carpathian" series

I second Janst Evanovich. Her series starts with one for the money. I laugh out loud reading them.

I love Christian fiction, and Lori Wick's book "Pretense" is awesome. Francine Rivers is a great writer as is Karen Kingsbury. I also adore Lavyrle Spencer books. I so wish she hadn't retired! I also enjoy Maeve Binchy and Debbie Macomber's novels (not necessarily her 'romance series books').

Have a great time, and bring some heat home with you!

Great thread! I've added a number of suggestions to my own must read list. A Prayer For Owen Meany is a favorite of mine too--I loved the movie. Another favorite movie book is Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe. I bought the book so I could find out if Big Sam barbecued Frank Bennet and if Ninny Threadgoode was Idgy. It was a very good book.

Joy in the Morning by Betty Smith

Do you want something recent or something that's been around awhile? Do you want a quick read or something heavier? I like strong characters and stories with a twist. I'm not so much into thrillers or murder mysteries.

I like Fannie Flagg, Jane Heller, and Judith Michael.

Titles in particular: Memiors of Geisha, all the Left Behind Series, Harry Potter, Scarlet Feather by Maeve Binchy.

Do you want humorous: I Don't Know How She Does It, The Devil Wears Prada, Julie and Romeo. Oh, Bridget Jones Diary and the sequel, On the Edge of Reason.

For fun reading, I second msteddom and recommend the Shopaholic books- all 3 were absolutely great!

If you like fiction, I recently read "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire. What a FANTASTIC book!!! It's the story of the Wicked Witch of the West. You'll never think about the Wizard of Oz in the same way again.

"Autobiography of a Face" by Lucy Grealy was a very good memoir.

I generally like most Agatha Christie books, but I recently read "The Big Four," and it was especially good.

"Facing the Wind" by Julie Salamon was good. It's a true story that really makes you think.

"Choke" by Chuck Palahniuk was really good.

I really liked "Diary of a Mad Bride-to-Be" as well as its sequel "Diary of a Mad Mom-to-Be." They're both light-hearted, but still of high quality.

For "classics," I second "The House of the Spirits," and I always loved "Jane Eyre."

Those were on the top of my head...if you think of a particular genre, I can think of more. Thanks for starting the thread- it's giving me some ideas too!

My two favorite books are "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" and "The Great Gatsby".

I read "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" for an English project my freshman year in high school and have loved it ever since. I read all 400-something pages in just two days, I was that hooked.

"The Great Gatsby" is something we had to read for AP English this year and I absolutely loved it - if I hadn't taken the class, the chances that I would have read it on my own were pretty slim. I'm glad I took the class and read the book - it was amazing.

I love anything by Agatha Christie and also enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes books.

I am re-reading for the third time the "All Creatures Great and Small" series by James Herriot. These books are about a country vet and his experiences. Sounds like something I would never want to read in a million years, but they are absolutely great and soooo entertaining to read.

I also love John Grisham's books and the Harry Potter books (yes, I am 35 years old:D )

Enjoy your trip and happy reading!

Lori P. :)

One of my all-time favorites is 'Lightning' by Dean Koontz. It's one of his older ones and much better, I think, than his newer novels.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I have read a few of your selections and loved them but some I never got around too. Or completely forgot about. I am not into any specific genre. I am looking to take a few light reads, a few horror (did all Stephen King), a few with strong characters and stories with a twist and few few real BIG ones that will take days to read as well as a few classics I never got too. Please keep them coming. One of my Christmas presents from my DH was "mucho colones" in Barnes and Nobles gift certificates for this pretty long trip.

I love books, I am not sure if I have an all time favorite, but I do have a lot that I like. Nora Roberts is one that I love, I was reading her key trilogy, but the last book seems to be hung up in the mail...argh. If you haven't read it yet I highly recomend it. Also great reads are Janet Evanavich's Stephanie Plum series (One for the Money, Two for the Dough, etc., there are 9 in all) and my most recent discovery is Sue Grafton's alphabet series, very good reads. Some other favorite authors are Luanne Rice, Debbie Macomber and so many more I can't even think right now.

Some are already stated:

Dan Brown - the Divinci Code - read it!!

John Grisham - The Firm is still a classic favorite

Michael Crichton - anything he wrote but get VIRUS

Cold Mountain (the book not the movie)

"The Notebook" - can't remember author

Anita Shriver's - "The Pilot's Wife"

There is a series of books i read as a teenager called "clan of the cave bear" Really different but fasinating fiction set at the very beginning of man.

"I don't know how she does it" - funny funny funny britishauthor

The Notebook is Nicholas Sparks
Im currently reading his book The Wedding

The new John Grisham is turning out to be a good read. Sandra Brown has had several really good ones in the last couple of years. One of my favorites of hers is Exclusive. Bleachers by John Grisham was good. The Kentucky series by fern Michaels was good. Jan Karon books are always a good read.
Happy Reading.
