Alright, so you can tell by my siggy that my friends and I are planning a Grad trip to Disneyland next year. Originally it was going to happen in late August, but it's since been moved to early July. Hehe, I need a new ticker... We're still debating, but we're agreeing that we want to get there a lot sooner and we don't want to wait a year. We're having a meeting on Monday, so I thought I'd pop in here and gather as much info as possible!

The visitor cast includes myself, my friends Jenny, Victoria, Madison (all have been before, but it's been years and they were only kids) and Megan (who has never been to anything Disney related save for a Disney Store.) I'm the only one in our group who frequents the park (my last trip being in November) and so the planning has mostly fallen on my shoulders. We intend to do everything we can and have the full Disney experience on this trip, no matter the cost.

Since this will be many of our first times traveling on our own (I've flown alone before, that's it) I figured it'd be great to hear from all of you, who are experts at planning your own trips.

Our first concern is ages and rates. I'm not sure what the legal age is to check into the Disneyland hotel, or if there will be any sort of special package we can get. 2 of us will be 18 and the rest will be 17, and we plan to only get one room at the Disneyland hotel. If we need him, my dad will come with us only to check us in and be the older guy. He'll probably come anyway, since he works for Air Canada and we could all get heavy flight discounts.

We plan to stay for 4 nights with a 3 day parkhopper. First day is afternoon arrival and Downtown Disney, then 3 days of park, and an afternoon flight home. So Monday-Friday. I think that's more than enough time, but will there be a day for all of the shows? We want to see any parades as well as WoC and F! since I've never seen either of them in all the years I've been to DL. (ok, so WoC just opened, but still!).

Unfortunately there are no 2011 packages up yet, but I was wondering if they ever have packages that include transportation from the airport to the hotel? I have always gone with my family, and we have always rented a car especially since my sister was born 6 years ago. We obviously don't need to rent a car now, since we won't be going anywhere else. We don't need flights included or anything, just transport. What is the best way to get to Disney with 5-6 people?

Are there any restaurants or eateries that we MUST go to? My family has always traveled on a budget (eg, buying all the food at walmart and keeping it at the hotel or something) until last year when we stayed at our first Disney hotel, Paradise Pier. Now of course, we're going all out and eating basically every meal in the park. We've got the Blue Bayou (I have ALWAYS wanted to eat here!) and my favorite restaurant, the Rainforest Cafe, but where else should we hit up? We want character meals and fancy dinners!

I was also wondering which rides offer the fastpass option, since I've been stuck in some pretty awful lines (Peter Pan's Flight, anyone?).

Which rides are open during early mornings? We had that last time and I think it was Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, but I just wanted to make sure.

Which stores offer the hotel room delivery service? I'm a hardcore shopper and I'm a softy for my favorites (I bought the giant $100 Eeyore in November, but it was too late to have it delivered so I had to carry him. It was a little annoying...) I don't want to buy something amazing and then have to carry it around for the whole day! And neither do my buddies (who seem to think they won't spend very much. But I know them better, and this is Disney, after all!)

Is the photography service worth it? We did it when I went with my family in November, and they thought it was worth it to get such good shots, but would a fast moving group of teens like us favor our own cameras over this? Don't get me wrong, we'll all be getting our autograph books filled out like the cool kids we are, but we don't want to pay too much for pictures.

Are there any permanent 'special' character meets that I should know about now? My family doesn't plan for things like that since we're go-with-the-flow kinda people, but I'd like to see more than I did last year (and Megan has yet to meet any characters! We have to make the most of this, obviously. She's had a rough time with her family and other stresses, so this is just the kind of thing she needs.)

And I think this is my last question, what sort of 'magical' things can we do? We're excited for anything Disney, even the 'little girl' sorts of things. I've heard about waking up Tinker Bell, but I can't remember if that's just WDW. I know Megan would love to do anything like that. We're a pretty goofy group of girls.

Any tips and tricks would be much appreciated!

PS: We're also hardcore gamers. Does the Disney Hotel offer any in-room gaming systems? Thanks!

I'm not positive, but since 2 will be 18 you should be fine.

Fireworks, Fantasmic, WOC, parades, etc. will be daily. A few show aren'd shown on Tuesday or Wednesday (right now Aladdin and Billy Hill)

Unfortunately there are no 2011 packages up yet, but I was wondering if they ever have packages that include transportation from the airport to the hotel? Someone will need to be 25 in order to rent a car. But there are different transportation to and from the airport available. We drive so I'm not sure what they are.

I'd look into Minnie's character breakfast in the park. Also check out allears.net for restaurant menus and prices and see what sounds yummy! Many like Carnation Cafe (for breakfast and lunch/dinner) and Cafe Orleans. Maybe you can be Princesses for a day and go to Ariels Grotto.

Which stores offer the hotel room delivery service? I'm a hardcore shopper and I'm a softy for my favorites (I bought the giant $100 Eeyore in November, but it was too late to have it delivered so I had to carry him. It was a little annoying...) I believe any store in the parks and at least World of Disney in DTD have delivery.

I say take the pics and you can decide once you come home if you want to buy them or a CD.

Permanent meets: Tinkerbell and friends in Pixie Hollow, Princess Fantasy Faire, Winnie the Pooh & Friends by Splash Mt, Mickey at his house in Toontown.

That's great! We were really hoping my dad wouldn't have to come. Ladies only and all that...

Fireworks, Fantasmic, WOC, parades, etc. will be daily. A few show aren'd shown on Tuesday or Wednesday (right now Aladdin and Billy Hill)

That sounds good, thanks.

Someone will need to be 25 in order to rent a car. But there are different transportation to and from the airport available. We drive so I'm not sure what they are.

That's another reason why we don't want to rent a car. I'm just hoping to find an affordable shuttle or something. Thanks though!

Is that at Plaza Inn? Or is that a separate thing? We were looking at the Plaza for lunch since we'll have Goofy's kitchen for breaky. Thanks for that site, it looks good. I've heard a lot about the Carnation Cafe. That's another reservation-needed place, right? What exactly is the Grotto? We looked at doing it in November but it was too expensive. Is it like your average character dining princess-style?

I believe any store in the parks and at least World of Disney in DTD have delivery.

Perfect, thanks!

I say take the pics and you can decide once you come home if you want to buy them or a CD.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten you didn't have to decide right away.

We went to Pixie Hollow last year, and I wasn't sure if it was temporary or not. I think we met Fawn, but idk the Pixies very well. We looked at the Fantasy Faire last year, but we couldn't tell what it was. It looked like some sort of walking thing, so we left it. Is it just a character meet and greet?

Thanks much for your help!

Yes Minnie's is at the Plaza Inn. Carnation is recommended to get a reservation since it's small and fills quickly. Ariels Grotto is the princess character meal. Very good food.

Princess FF is a princess meet and greet. The line is always long but you meet 3 princesses.

The fine print on the Disneyland website says, "†If you are under 18 years of age, you must have your parent or guardian's permission to dial this number." I would take that to mean an 18 year old is able to make the reservation.

Check out this thread for lots of different transportation options: Airport Proximity to DLR and Ground Transportation Information Super Thread . The thread is quite comprehensive [coughing modestly] and will give you some of the most common forms of transportation from the airports to DLR along with an idea of what each costs for 5-6 people. The Disneyland Express might be the most economical "fun" option (especially if you buy the "family" pass). If you want to go a little fancier, you might consider getting a limousine for your trip in to DLR and then taking a cheaper option back to the airport. There are some surprisingly decent prices for the limos, especially if you are splitting the cost 5 or 6 ways.

Are there any restaurants or eateries that we MUST go to? My family has always traveled on a budget (eg, buying all the food at walmart and keeping it at the hotel or something) until last year when we stayed at our first Disney hotel, Paradise Pier. If you really, really want a fancy dinner, Napa Rose is as fancy as you can get (well, except Club 33) at DLR. It sounds to me like your crew is playful enough to get a kick out of most of the character meals, so you should definitely read up on all of them. And, I suspect you would probably all really enjoy a light lunch or dessert/snack at the Golden Horseshoe while watching Billy Hill and the Hillbillies one afternoon.

I was also wondering which rides offer the fastpass option, since I've been stuck in some pretty awful lines (Peter Pan's Flight, anyone?).

Okay, if I were 17/18 again and going with a group of my friends to DLR, I'd be all over going to the BBB. You wouldn't be able to wear costumes, but you could do something cute like make your own t-shirts with a cute saying on them. Maybe a different color shirt for each of you with the same quote? Or the same color shirt, but different quotes to show off your individual personalities? So, check out this thread: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2153327. And then check out the Design section of the DIS here for shirt ideas: http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=105.

@3TinksAndAnEeyore

Thanks a lot for all the links! I was dreading having to go through tons of threads looking for tiny bits of info. Right now I'm in the classic "I'm excited but I have no idea where to start" phase.

I've never heard of Billy Hill, but I'll look into that for sure. There are so many things I've missed out on going with my family.

I like the BBB idea. I've never even been in there because of the fact that I'm the total opposite of a girly-girl, but I think I could swallow my enormous ego just this once. xD

Thanks again, this is really helpful.

I think the Disneyland Resort Express sounds the most covenient form LAX. Here is the link http://www.allanaheimtours.com/body.asp?tour=ANA-TRN03&page=TourDetails. If your flying into Burbank, I would say the train or a different shuttle.

Many hotels have a minimum age of 21...some have 18. I would suggest that you call the hotel you are interested in directly and ask them point blank so that there are no surprises when you arrive. There are enough hotels in and around Disneyland that a bit of calling and you'll find something that will allow an 18 year old to rent.

BUT.............Keep in mind that many hotel rooms won't accomodate 5 people ....so you will need two rooms, or look into suites which generally have higher capacity because they are larger.

As for the BBB...there are styles that are not girly-girly so you could still have fun and not have to swallow too much, lol.

I would HIGHLY recommend the Photopass CD. Especially if you are going to autograph signing as many of the charcters will have a photographer there. Stop every time you see a Photopass Photographer because these are photos that you will cherish for YEARS AND YEARS, even when you're old, like me. Yes, you can definitely take your own cameras and long, and should....but the Photographers will capture your WHOLE group rather than everyone but the one with the best camera...or having to ask strangers to take your photos so everyone is in the shot, etc. And the Photopass folks LOVE when you get silly about poses and such....strangers might not be as accomodating, lol. I always tell the photographer that we are getting the CD...that lets them know to snap away and take multiple shots, and they do!

Restaurants...well, if you want "fancy" than Wine Country Trattoria is probably high on the list. You might want to look into WCT or Ariel's Grotto (character meal) for the World of Color guaranteed seating.

Another character meal is Plaza Inn for breakfast. And of course Goofy's Kitchen at the Disneyland hotel.

Napa Rose in Grand Californian is another very nice restaurant. You already mentioned Blue Bayou. Downtown Disney has some other nice restaurants as well, depending on the type of food you enjoy.

Have a great time!

Yep, we'll be coming in at LAX. That looks great and surprisingly affordable! I'll be looking into this for sure.

We're staying in the Disneyland hotel for sure, and it actually looks like 18 is the minimum age since you have to be 18 to book a room. I'll be calling them tomorrow for sure.

Most of us are very small, and we've all stayed in a room with 2 beds before. We also don't mind couch arrangements if needed. We won't be in the hotel room much anyway.

I was looking more into the BBB, and it looks like there are some things we could get into. Even though we've all got a tough-guy attitude, we've all still got our favorite princesses. xD
I was thinking of surprising our first-timer with a princess makeover. She'd kill me later, but it'd be so worth it...

The Photopass CD is looking better and better. I remember last year we got the photos done pretty fast, and it didn't take too long for us to choose which ones we wanted in the end (though we'll just take the CD home this time). I think we'll probably opt for that as well as taking our own pictures if we get the chance.

I was looking at the AG WoC seating instead of the F! dessert buffet thing. It looks like it'd be more worth it than spending the money to sit in some chairs for 20 minutes. Also, the desert sampler looks tasty...

Those restaurants all look great. I saw the Napa Rose once I think, when we went through the GC to get into the park. It looked ok, though we're more into themes and insane ambiance.

Thanks a bunch!

Just FYI....while you and your friends may not have any problem sleeping on couches or crowding three into a bed (been there, still do that with my skinny teens when Dad goes out of town, lol).....realize that if the hotel finds out that you have 5 people in a room designated for 4.....they are required by law to split you into two rooms (and if you can't pay for the second room, someone has to sleep in the car, lol). They aren't being mean or money hungry, but there are fire code laws and several other codes that limit how many people can sleep in a specific room. If it's rated for 4 people plus 1 infant, since none of your friends are infants, they still can't allow you to have 5 people in there. If you decide to give it a go and hope they can't count, that's up to you, but be prepared if you're caught it can be ugly. If they are caught by the fire marshall etc their fines are much more than you're paying.

Even if it says you have to be over 18 to call to book a room, I would still call and tell them that you are 18, that you have a credit card in your name, and ID and want to be sure that there will not be any problem with your renting the room for yourself and your friends. There may be other limits that you will want to know about ahead of time. Better to know ahead of time than to arrive and spend your first day trying to figure out what to do! Write down the name, date and time of the person who tells you it's no problem.

Also....don't buy your Photopass CD at the park. Keep your card(s) and when you get home log into photopass.com and put in the numbers of your card(s). This will drop all your photos into your account. You can then add logos, borders and other special graphics onto those pictures. This adding graphics is not available at the park. When you're done order your CD and it will take a couple of days to come in the mail.

Also, check with the hotel when you check in if there are any promotions for the Photopass CD. Haven't done that in Disneyland because we stay offsite there, but at WDW in Florida, if you stay onsite there is a good sized discount on the Photopass...it's supposed to be in with your paperwork, but if it's not we just ask about it and always get the coupon code. As I said, not positive if DisneyLAND does the same, but worth asking.

Your friend will probably love the makeover....even if she's not girly girl...there is just something FUN about being fussed over especially when all of her friends are there too. Be sure to let them know at the front desk that you guys are together and ask if it is possible to get you all seated near each other....the place is pretty big and very nosiy, so being closer together makes it easier to interact together. ALSO....be sure everyone has their Photopass cards handy (they're free, so everyone should ask for one) because the Photographer will come by several times and take in progress photos and then the "big reveal" will also be photographed. Having to chase down the card when each of you need them will be a pain. (Another hint....the number on the back of the card is gold...without it you may not be able to retreive your photos...so take a picture of it with your camera, or write it into a contact space on your cell phone so if the card gets lost you have the number to enter on the website above).

Definitely voting for the WOC over the Fantasmic dessert. Done the dessert and while it's definitely yummy it's ridiculously expensive for so little that you can eat (it's so rich even my chocoholic daughter had to stop before the show was over, lol). The AG WOC is also expensive, but you get a whole meal, plus a gorgerous dessert, and the WOC show is a definite rival for Fantasmic. Now...if you decide you want to do both, they just announced today that Resort Guests will get to be in line for the WOC FP 30 minutes before the general public, so it may be easier to get a FP now. In the past several weeks it has been hours waiting in line only to have them run out.

Ok. that's all the motherly advice I can muster for now. Oh how I wish I were young enough to come with you.....but I'll just have to be happy with dreaming out my teenagers doing their first solo trip in a couple of years. And the long night of storytelling when they get back!

I never even thought of that! But that's what I'm here for, hehe. It looks like one of us might be dropping out anyway, so we might get cut down to 4. I'll be calling the hotel tomorrow when we have our meeting so I can ask them all of the important stuff. I wish we'd have stayed in the Disneyland hotel prior to this so that I'd have a better idea of what I was doing. xD

This just made me think about when we should be booking as well. By the time we have to book, only one of us will be 18, and it won't be me since my birthday will be about 2 weeks before we leave. She has ID covered, but I doubt a Credit card would be ready by then. I might get my dad to do it after all, just to be safe. He doesn't mind flying down with us and staying in the hotel.

This will drop all your photos into your account. You can then add logos, borders and other special graphics onto those pictures. This adding graphics is not available at the park. When you're done order your CD and it will take a couple of days to come in the mail.

Sounds good. I didn't know you couldn't add the graphics in the park, that's good to know since we'll be wanting '2011' dated frames and such. I'll be sure to ask about any promotions as well. I can't get enough of those...

We're not too worried about cash since we've all got good paying jobs and no bills to pay save for cell phones. I've basically paid for my flight/hotel/tickets already, so right now it's just final costs for things like AG. I did some more snooping into the WoC seating/dinner, and it looks a lot better than the F! dessert thingy. We'll probably just watch F! from the sidelines like everyone else. xD

I'll look into the FP for sure, it looks like we'll actually be needing a lot of those. We want to get maximum FP-age, but of course, we're lazy teenagers who all sleep in until noon...pffft, what am I saying, when you're in Disney your internal alarm goes off at 5am every morning. >.>

Ok. that's all the motherly advice I can muster for now. Oh how I wish I were young enough to come with you.....but I'll just have to be happy with dreaming out my teenagers doing their first solo trip in a couple of years. And the long night of storytelling when they get back!

Let me tell you, this has been a lot easier than getting advice from my mother. She's a little...excitable? I don't know if that's the word for it...
Thanks so much, this has been really helpful.

I just wanted to say- have fun! Reading this thread brought back so many happy memories of when I did this with my 10 best girl friends after we graduated.

I loved that you said you were having a meeting- because we had several important "planning meetings" leading up to our trip (ah, if only the internet and the DIS had existed back then), but they got us all very excited!

If you guys don't want to do photo pass, you could just designate one camera to be the main camera and use that for all your group photos/character shots and then share them when you get home (that way you aren't handing the cast member 5 cameras each time).

I don't remember if you said which airport you are flying into, but you can use the Disney shuttle or Super Shuttle (everything is easier at the John Wayne/OC airport than at LAX). Super shuttle is a little cheaper and you can do a shared van ride. Or since you have a large group you could look into a town car service.

Enjoy your planning! :wizard:
