Natalie,
This is one is so cute, awesome job!
Do you happen to have anything for Cruella? We saw her last week at Disneyland.
Thanks for being a wonderful source of inspiration.

The pick a pearl thing is a family tradition going back a few generations. Long story short; when Hawaii became a US state my grandparents packed up my young mom and her brothers and moved to the big island. My grandfather was an architect and got a job there. My grandmother loved to make her own jewelry and had friends who were Japenese pearl divers. It is just something we would do when visiting my grandparents in Hawaii. So, when my mom and I would see a place to pick a pearl "on the mainland" (like they used to have in Sea World Orlando with actual pearl divers MANY moons ago), we stop and pick one, save it-always hoping to get twins (yeah! instant earrings!!) and any color but cream. My mom and I compete to see who's pearl is larger, how many and if the color is rare.
Continuing our corky little family traditon we always stop in Japan to shop and pick a pearl while waiting for our dinner reservation upstairs. Teppan Edo is our favorite and go there for DH's bday. I think it is $15, you pick a peal, they open it, rub it in salt, do a little ceremony while showing off your pearl then hand it to you in a little baggie. The "ceremony" is simply the lady who opens the oyster taps a tiny taiko drum, claps drum sticks and everyone claps. They will make a charm for you there for an additional charge. Never done that. Just a note, I have only seen single pink or cream pearls "revealed" there.
We were in Epcot last December, our girls were 3 and 14 mos. They had a blast! They had no idea why people were crowded around a little water tank, what a pearl is or why anyone would ever want one but had a really good time clapping along with the crowd and were quite entertained. Our 14 month old DD doesn't say much but she is very observent, studied the oysters and actually pointed to the one she wanted. Got pics, too cute! My gr-ma always said to get the best pearl pick the UGLIEST oyster - black, nasty, gross. Never been disappointed. Have pics from 12/08, would love to share but haven't taken the time to read the instructions on how to upload photos.
A pearl symbolizes, for me, how there is a hidden blessing from lifes struggles. This is why I was stressing over the pick a pearl scrapbook page and why your DISign means SO much to me. It is going in their autograph books, digital scrapbooks, EVERYWHERE for every year here on out!!![]()
