DH has been "into" GPS'ing (global positioning system) for a few years now, and has just discovered "geo-caching" so was just wondering if anyone else out there is into that.

Us, us us! It's our favorite family activity! Dh and I do some on our own but right now we are sticking to the easy ones that the kids can do with us. It's a great activity since within a 45 minute drive of us there are like 3000 caches. That's not an exaggeration, last I looked it was right around there. WE have a park that has about 400 just inside the park (it's a huge park!) WE've only found about 30 of them so far!

Going on my first one next Sunday. They will show me how to use my GPS. :rotfl2:

We just started!! I first heard about this a while ago and thought it would be a perfect activity for the family. My DH loves techie gadgets and I love maps. I finally got my GPS about 2 weeks ago. We have many near our house. We've gone out twice now, but have only found 1. Well, one was a 4-parter and we found the first 3 clues, but not the final cache. We were going to go out yesterday, but DH wasn't feeling well and it's not nice today. I really like it, but sometimes it's frustrating not to find the cache. I think we've looked for 4, so we're 1 for 4--not very good odds.

We do it. Haven't been out to do it since last fall so hopefully in the next few weeks if the weather stays nice.

We plan to start once the snow's gone around here. My DH got me a GPS for Christmas(think it was more for him!)so we're looking forward to starting. We did some letterboxing in the fall and had a great time with that, but were running out of local places to go to. We think it's a great activity to get a little exercise and see some scenery you wouldn't usually.

What's letterboxing? :confused3

The letterboxing site I use is letterboxing.org.

Letterboxing is like geo-caching, but without the coordinates. You are given an approximate location of a "box" and in the box is a rubber stamp that you use to put the imprint in your book and you then use your rubber stamp to put an imprint in the book found with the "box". It's sometimes tough to find these boxes as you get directions like " go 20 paces from the tree with the broken branch in the shape of a giraffe"(just a made up example!).

There are several letterboxes at WDW - a couple in the parks and several at some of the resorts. I'm so excited to track down the new boxes just put out since my trip in November. It's alot of fun to "letterbox" and a great family thing. Just beware, don't let anyone catch you finding these boxes in WDW as I'm not sure Security would be too keen on it!

DH and I found out about geocaching over the winter and are waiting for the weather to warm up to try our first search. We recently purchased a GPS unit and can't wait to give it a try!

My DW and I cache under the name of Team SAR-Dogs. We have over 115 finds so far throughout eastern PA and NJ and also managed a few while at WDW in January. We take our dogs whenever possible and have trained them to help us locate the cache containers so they enjoy it, too. This is a fun hobby and a great excuse to get outdoors and visit new parks and other interesting places.

Us too. Found our first geocache 3 yrs ago. (3 yrs this August)

We cache everywhere go (vacations too). DH caches on all his business trips too. 211 finds so far.

We are "wandering4cache".

A matter of fact, we are going to our nephews 1st communion today, then plan to hit 3 caches near their house after. We've taken many family & friends over the years, and they've all enjoyed it too.

We've only hidden 3 however. And have 3 travel bugs - but they tend to disappear.

We started last October and have become obsessed with it. Well, as obsessed as we can be with not alot of time and not very many in the immediate area, but we have gotten 3 ftf's in the last 2 weeks, and are planning on heading out today after church to do a 3 part 4/4.5. We do it on trips also. Heading towards the St Louis area next weekend and already have 20 downloaded for on the way. TwoHD's&The Kids

I bought hubby a GPS for his bday in February and we've been going out every Monday for a month now. It's such a fun thing to do!!!

Can someone explain this to me or point me to a website that will. I have a navigational system GPS in my car Can you use that or does it have to be the handheld kind. Thanks

DH and I wanted to start Geo-caching this summer but don't know where to start. Can anyone direct us to a site as well as a place to get an inexpensive GPS.

I had no idea this was around! I checked out geocaching.com's website, and found that there's a ton of hidden chaches just a couple miles from our home. We're going to try finding our first one tomorrow!

Go to geocaching.com and in the upper right hand corner enter your zip code, that will show you whats in your area. Walmart has good beginner Gps systems for under 100.00

pirate: We have been geocaching for just over a month now and LOVE it! We visited some frineds a few hours away last weekend and I took them all out for their first hunt. THe 14 year old girl in the family LOVED it. My DD and DS and friends DD would NOT let me rest. They begged me all weekend long to go do "just one more". We ended up doing like 19 of them in less than a 42 hour period. It has really been a fun way for us to spend time together. I am surprising the kids today by picking them up at school and trying to do "just a couple" more. pirate:
