Im sorry for jumping in here--
But I have used point and shoots. and been using a Canon for a few years now.

I think its time for me to upgrade from a point and shoot. I am not looking for something complicated- something to learn on until I can upgrade it again.
Heading to Disney in Sept and dont want anything really heavy- (can i gt by with just one lens?)

would you recommend a canon rebel as a first camera of this type?

I'd also agree that a Rebel would make for a great first dslr (the T1i is my first). And you can definitely get by with one lens. I really only use one lens for my camera now; a 18-135mm (but I do have the kit lens as a backup). But I'd definitely suggest just starting with the kit lens (the 18-55mm), then se what you need from there; whether you'll like wider shots or more zoom.

I had a Canon Rebel film camera and it took great pictures. When I switched to digital I didn't go with the canon due to the price. I want to upgrade to a digital SLR since I have the lenses eventually. Since you will be back from your trip, maybe I can borrow your camera when I go down in December.

Ok- I thought the Canon Rebel was a digital. (if i do get this camera-- yes you can use it.

I can find it for under 500.00 Looks nice. Looks easy to handle.
Is the Rebel a DSL kindof camera??

Amazing Photos BoB. Your photos are the reason I want to upgrade to a different kind of camera.

There are many versions of rebel digitals, the first was simply the digital rebel, then the XT, then the XTi, XS etc. You don't want to go to far back in the past.

Also, beware of "finding it for under".... make sure you're getting it from a reputable dealer.

I'm not sure what you mean DSL kind of camera, it is an SLR if that's what you meant.

yep- thats what I meant--- Honey has been telling me the difference between DSL for Tv's

Canon 10.1MP Digital SLR Camera, EOS Rebel XS (is the one I was interested in

that model is OK but if you can stretch your budget a little more look at the newer Canon Rebel models, e.g. T1i (500D) or T2i (550D)

Originally they were film cameras but now are digital. Very easy to use, there is even a setting that makes it essentially a point and shoot camera. I have a lens goes up to 400 mm, which is about the same as a 12x optical zoom. Big lens though, so you probably wouldn't want to lug it around the parks.
