Looking for opinions for adding on points direct vs resale

I'm having a bit of a dilemma and my thinking on this fluctuates just about every hour on which way is the right way to go about this. So basically my wife and I are looking to add on points at CCV. We currently have 50 at CCV, 50 at Riv and 25 at OKW. CCV is our favorite and we know more often than not that is where we want to stay. I have been following resale contracts since the ROFR monster has been asleep to see if I could find anything that really wowed me. We are looking to add on somewhere between 50-100 points ideally. I have found a resale contract that has 100 points, that I can get for the same cost as 50 direct points. BUT, we have to finance either contract (for a few years at least, not the whole normal 10 yr term) and the interest rate is like 5% cheaper going direct. So that makes the monthly payment close to the same once you include the dues difference. Also throwing a bit of a wrench into the thought process is that with our 2 other direct contracts (CCV & RIV) we are at 100 points direct and only need 50 more to lock in direct benefits till 2068. So my quandry is do I get more points for the same $$ or do I just buy less points direct and lock in the benefits? My gut is leaning go direct, but my mathematical brain is saying get more points for the same $$. Its a tough call that I literally go back and forth on hourly lol. Was just wondering what everyones input on this would be. Thanks :)

I say go direct....you get less points for now, but you do end up with eligibility for membership extras and have another 50 points that can be used at RIV and future resorts.

Resale CCV can not and as someone who had restricted points and unrestricted points, it was not ideal when something at RIV showed up and I couldn't book it because I only had restricted BLT left...we sold that a year after buying.

So many things to consider, and everyone's situation is unique. Do you see value in the 'blue card' situation if you get to 150 direct points? Are you interested in AP, or some of the other potential savings you could get? Or would it be better to enjoy an extra night or 2 each year in a nice room with more points via resale?! Obviously, more direct points would allow you some options at Riv at 7 months..... Good luck with the decision!

Yes we do see the benefits in the blue card. We typically buy AP's and these last few years of not being able to buy them has really cost us a bunch more in buying tickets than we would have spent on the AP's. It would be nice to be able to mix points at Riv as well I think. I worry that if we dont break the 150 threshold now, then they will raise it and I will just be that much farther away from it in the future. All things going thru my head as I weigh out the options lol

Not to throw another angle in, buy perhaps make your purchase (either 50 direct or 100 resale), but consider getting some funds back by selling an OKW 25-pt contract - help pay for your new purchase. I can't imagine 25 points making a big dent in OKW reservations at 11 months - but you're the one with the vacation plans! You won't get a ton for 25 OKW points, but it could lower your financing requirements, while netting more overall points at the end. Sorry - that wasn't your original question....!

If you think the perks offered with direct will be of value to you then it does seem to make some sense to buy direct and pay the lower interest they offer with financing (is there any way to finance on a low interest Visa or something though?) You could get the 50 points now and if you need more points one day, look for resale then since you won't need more direct points then.

I usually don’t advocate going direct but since you are only 50 points away from getting the blue card and the dvc AP is valuable to you, I would vote for going direct.

That said, I would scrimp and save for the next year then get a credit card with 0% interest for another year instead of financing with Disney. Maybe even rent out this years points to be able to afford the extra points you want to buy. IMO, sacrificing one years vacation is worth it to have the extra 50 points for the next 44 years.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do!

I cant really sell that contract. It was my parents contract that they gifted to me to get me in as a member and be able to buy my original 50 at CCV and Riv and not have to buy 150 right out of the gate. So technically its still theirs, its just in my name and i have use of it if i need the points. Dont think they would be happy if I sold one of theirs that they put in my name to help me out lol

I would go direct. I have a 150 pt direct OKW contract and I just added on 30 pts direct today. I feel like with the way Disney is putting restrictions on new properties it's the right thing to do for us. I want to use my points at RIV and DLH as well as the cabins at WL and POLY2, which I anticipate will be new associations. This doesn't mean I won't have resale points (looking for the perfect BWV resale contract now), but I also want direct points to use at the current and future new resorts.

I agree the restrictions are putting everything in a whole different perspective. Im leaning like having a mix of direct and resale may be annoyingly cumbersome. My gut is saying that adding on direct CCV is prob the better way to go, still has the longest expiration date without restrictions, and i dont feel like adding a 4th resort would be very helpful. At least thats how I feel right now lol. But it changes hour by hour :)

A contract that goes for 45 more years doesn’t appeal to me because of my age, but it may well do for you! Seems very worth it to have a total of 100 there especially if staying in studios works for you.

Studios are fine most of the time, we dont have any kids so its just my wife and I. The 45 more years appeals to me for a couple reasons, first that the longer the contract has left the better it holds its value IMO if we ever did have to sell, and if not we plan on passing it on to our nieces/nephews who are big disney families already and we would like to set them up for the future for as long as possible and not have them have to worry about any further restrictions or issues that may arise down the line as DVC seems to be constantly changing
