Looking for Information on Where to Stay - First Visit to New York City

I'm in the beginning stages of planning a first trip to the Big Apple.

We want to see all the familiar tourist sites - the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park, etc. We want to do a Broadway Show, and dh wants to see Yankee Stadium.

So....where do I begin???

Any hints or tips as to where to stay? Moderately priced please.

Manhattan is my fave place on earth!!!!!!! You're going to LOVE it.

I, honestly, have yet to stay in a hotel there because my uncle lives on 34th street and I stay with him (free!!). My suggestion would be to stay near Times Square if at all possible, its a 24 hour tourist mecca, and a relatively safe environment. There are hotels on every corner there, it seems, but I have passed some that seemed to be in the middle of a neighborhood which often got dark and deserted later at night. If you stay in Times Square area, you'll be near Broadway and right next to subs, cabs, and buses to get around all hours of the night. You can easily get anywhere from that area of town, I think.

I am sure others, who have stayed in a hotel there, will have other suggestions... but if you're narrowing down areas, that's where i would stick to.

NYC is relatively easy to navigate with a sub map and unlimited ride card... =) You can get anywhere you want =)

Manhattan is incredible. You will love it. If keeping costs down is really critical, I often recommend the Jersey City, NJ Hyatt, which is right on the NY Harbor, for the following reasons:
1. It's steps to the PATH station, which will take you directly to the World Trade Center site/Statue of Liberty Ferry (10-15 mins), as well as directly to 14th St. and 34th St (15-20 mins). It is easier and cheaper to get from the Jersey City Hyatt to good sites in NYC than it is from many of the hotels in NYC, especially those on the East Side.
2. The views are GORGEOUS. From many of the rooms you can see the entire Manhattan skyline from the west.
3. The hotel itself is fantastic, the restaurant and bar are good as well and definitely cheaper than NYC.
4. Totally safe.
5. Free parking (you'll pay big $$$ in NYC)

I live so close, I don't need a hotel.
I did stay at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square once for business. It was very nice.

Times Square is very expensive...we were there last year and our hotel was 189.00 per night. That was the Sheraton Hotel and Towers which I would NOT recommend to anyone for numerous reasons! You can get cheaper hotels in the area, just not right on Broadway. Times Square is the best. It is very easy to get around by Subway...we asked the hotel staff for directions and had no problems. There are tons of things to do right within walking distance. (including standing outside the windows of the news shows and going down very early in the morning to be on NBC. Also for teens TRL (MTV) is right there.

OH yeah I forgot to mention the parking if you drive. The hotel charged 20.00 per day if you park in their lot...we took a charter bus so we avoided that.

You can get some great hotels right in the center of it all on PRICELINE. I got the MARRIOTT MARQUIS (right in the middle of Time's Square) on Priceline for $110 per night.
