I work in an elementary school and we just had a new student join us. She is from Brazil and speaks little to no english. I am trying my best to learn some Portuguese, just some basic words to help her out. Maybe some words that we would use in school. I understand that she needs to learn english but I want her to feel comfortable.

Does anyone know any good websites, I have googled some and found some to help but maybe someone knows a real good one to help me out.

Thanks in advance for any help!!:goodvibes

My dad speaks Portuguese. He's not answering his phone, but I'll e-mail him and ask him if he knows of any good resources for you.

Thanks to both Barb D and buzzlady. I went to that website and that will work nicely....I can even pull that up at school on the computer with her sitting with me!

Sorry, I was only taught the bad words. :confused3

Hmmm, I find that Babelfish is not always accurate, grammatically incorrect, and/or it doesn't translate well.

Did you Google "Brazilian Portuguese phrases?" There are a few sites with audio to get the correct pronunciation.

BTW I am part Portuguese and know some phrases and words, but nothing in the context of a school setting. GL and kudos to you for working with her!

I have tried to google. I did find some that have audio but they sound so robotic.

She is a wonderful young lady!! Such a different way in which they respect their elders. At the end of her first day, she came up to me and hugged me and kissed me on the cheek. The next morning, she did the same to me and the teacher. She is going to be a wonderful asset to the class!!
I only hope that some of the other kids in the class learn some respect from her!! :thumbsup2

What a neat opportunity for all the kids in the class! :)

I remember in HS we had many exchange students from South America, and the Brazilian was able to understand those who spoke Spanish because the languages are similar. So your new student may be able to converse with a Spanish speaker, if that helps.

Our wonderful new student is starting to feel more comfortable in class. She does speak with the spanish speaking students and they help to translate!
I have labeled things all over the room and she will go up to things and repeat the words. She is starting to come out of her shell and is blending nicely with the class. She comes in with a big smile and says HELLO and I have got her into saying "see ya later" :rotfl2: when she is heading off to lunch or off to the ESL room.

Thanks for all your support and words of kindness and suggestions you have all given.

The bigger question is....if the girl can't speak English, why is she even in school ? Why does the teacher have to take on the extra burden of trying to learn Portuguese ? So, the other students end up suffering because you have to spend extra time on her. This is indicative of the problems encountered with illegals overwhelming school systems in the Southwest.
