Looking for handouts?

I really try hard to see the good in people (most of the time :lmao:), but every now and then I see a post where I can't help to think that the poster is looking for a handout. I always wonder with so many generous people on this website, do you think people actually send them cash and/or gifts?

I'm not saying that what they are doing is right or wrong, but I always wonder if these people end up on the receiving end of some generous souls.

I don't know but that's a sobering thought:sad2: I suppose the kind always run the risk of being taken advantage of by the amoral. I just hope people use some discretion with their generosity and if folks on the outside see suspicious behavior they call the person out on it. maybe the mods could check to see if it's a pattern of the IP address?

Not so much on this board, but on other boards. I know on one group I am in they do the Angel thing and you always see the poor-me stories coming out of the woodwork. Some people keep it going all year round, and one family has gotten internet help for two years running.

I see how many, many people have sucky luck. But reaching out to internet strangers to solve your money problems? There are many instances that the problems are self-created by not taking proper precautions OR being a little too laissez faire with the "God wil provide" mentality, so sometimes it's easier to just step back from that group this time of year. Or at least that's what I do.

I was thinking the same thing! I'm fairly cycnical about things I read on the internet, but so many people are kind hearted.

I am sure people do, and for the most part, I think they're getting taken advantage of-often if you look up previous posts, things don't match up, like the amount of children, how long they/spouse has been out of work, etc. It's a crappy thing to do, and I truly hope karma bites them.

Then they are people who have truly devastating things happen, and receive some wonderful things from very kind hearted people here.

When Katrina hit, there was a lady who needed insulin and medical supplies, turned out to be a scam. I was close to sending her $$$$ and then my gut told me otherwise. Sure enought a scam. So sad as there are truly people out there that do need help.

Oh yeah, there is one I am suspicous of that has been hitting it pretty hard right now and seems to have done it before. Some people do take advantage of kindness.

I'm probably kind of obtuse but I rarely see posts that seem like someone is asking for a handout. But then I'm not the sort to readily send money to a family I've never met either.
I'm way more likely to give money to a family from church at Christmas or something like that. Those folks I know and it's much easier for me to give money to them. Or sometimes one of my siblings will mention a family they know that is in need and I'll give money to them. You feel better giving to a family that you think really needs the help.

The DISboards has been scammed many times. If I am donating, it will be local in my community or a charity that I am familiar with.

I am a cynic at heart so I just can't believe over the internet. Just how it is.

Yup.

Unfortunately, it's the scammy people that prevent others that truly need help from getting it. :sad2:

There will always be scam artist. they've been around since the begininng of time and will probably be around after the nuclear armaggedon. ;) just like roaches.

I don't let scam artist get to me, I have causes that I'm passionate about and try to support them.

I'm a great believer in Karma.

Wasn't there a huge thread a couple years ago where many people sent things and later found out it was a big scam. I don't remember the details-maybe a house fire or something :confused3.

I have to agree with others, if you are really in need, posting on a Disney chat board is really not the best place to get help :lmao:. I won't donate to anything like that.

There is a thread on the budget board that had me wondering if she was hoping someone would donate money again for her kids as someone had already donated to her daughter once before. Kind of had me thinking she was hoping someone would come to her rescue again. I know a lot of people are having a hard time right now, us included, but I would never get on a message board and tell my sad sob story and then accept money from strangers. Kids have to learn that they can't always get what they want no matter if they are gifted kids or regular kids. I know it is hard to say no but I had to tell my kids no this year too on a lot of things.

I choose to keep my giving local - either thru my church or anonamously to someone I know or a friend knows is in need. Can't see myself sending $$ to a stranger on the Internet...

I got the same vibe from that thread.

No way am I donating to anyone over the DIS or most message boards (I'm on one message board where I have personally met a good proportion of the posters - there I'd likely donate).

Same here.

Like others, I keep my giving local. :santa:

link please ( I couldn't find the thread) :lmao:
