Looking for decorating tips for a living room with red walls (pics)

I would use the "old" furniture you brought with you(assumption) and cover it using slipcovers.

I'd then purchase "accent" pieces containing red, such as throw pillows, an area rug, lampshades, things of that nature.

Purchasing new furniture for a rental house could mean a huge waste of money as it may not "fit", size wise or style wise in the house you ultimately buy!

I wouldnt do too much of red accents, because those walls are enough red .. Maybe a couple small dishes on the table..or 1 small pillow.. I wouldnt go rug or lampshades.. JMO.

Here's other red rooms I googled :)

That's why I stated purchasing items "containing" the color red.

There needn't be much, just a few "dabbles" here and there!

As someone mentioned previously, pulling colors from a painting is a great place to start, as viewed in the top room of the photos above!

soft yellows , maybe a bit of floral here and there too. i have seen periwinkle , lavendars and purples with this too and it looks good.

i do not like that gold color / you might redo that .

I just picked out new furniture. I went with neutral furniture and added color with pillows, art and rugs. My sectional is taupe and I chose a red chair to accompany it with accents of purple, green and black. Our walls are a very light sage. The batiks on the wall echo the red, green, purple and black. The rugs I chose are wool striped with warmed up taupe, black, red and a blue that meets the green and purple head on looking great on our wood floor AND a small zebra stripe jute at the other end of the room (long room) under and accenting the red chair and another black and grey chair from a previous decor. I've repeated the zebra print in one pillow on the sectional and a wooden vase on a side table at the opposite end of the room. I have pics but I'm not sure how to post them. I think your key is your accent pieces. Pick neutral, functional furniture that will easily adapt.

I love this room! It has a warm, cozy look to it that I think comes from the white trim with the red walls. Our living room has a darker look to it. The only white trim is at the bottom of the walls.

It's actually more of a brown than gold, but yeah, I agree. It isn't a favorite color of mine either.

Honestly, I'm not sure I would have choosen this particular house. I was on the other side of the country when my husband told me he had found a "beautiful house" for us. He loved the red walls. Me, not so much. He was right about everything else, though.:rotfl: The house is located where we wanted to be. It is spacious, has a nicely landscaped backyard with a large, bricked patio, and all the other rooms are painted in shades of white, tan, and beige. I can learn to live with red walls in the living room for a year. And, I can always relocate to the family room when it gets to be too much.:rotfl:

I do want to furnish and decorate the living room so that it is warm and inviting looking. Many of you have mentioned bamboo, but I'm afraid that would give the room more of an Oriental look to it. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it just isn't the style I want.:) I think we'll take a trip up to IKEA this weekend and browse around.

Yes, I agree.:) And, I'd love to see some pics of your furniture. I'm not very computer literate, so I can't help you with posting the pics. I use photobucket, if that is of any help to you.

You could always hang up white curtains over sections of the walls if it's too much red. Ikea has floor to ceiling curtains. Although your place might have a much higher ceiling. You could always buy yardage of fabric in the on-sale bins at a fabric store to drape.
