Looking for a teaching job? Rhode Island is hiring 74 at one school!

Let's also not forget that only one school in this entire district is making AYP and that is an elementary school that does not have any ELL or students with disabilities.

What is Gallo doing to correct the problems at the lower levels before these students get to Central Falls High School? I haven't heard anything about the teachers in these schools working longer hours, eating lunch with the students, tutoring...and not getting paid.

 Weird. Just weird. I could see having Lunch With The Teacher Day every so often as a reward, but to "build stronger relationships" :rotfl:

We have 1/2 hour to eat. Those kids wolf down their food at record speed and most of them have disgusting table manners (yay parents:rolleyes:).

It is difficult to watch them eat while on lunch duty. I could not imagine eating my own meal while watching them spit all over.

Maybe the school should bring the parents in and teach THEM how to teach their children to eat. I would give up my time for that:thumbsup2

I feel sorry for the small percentage of children that are taught proper table manners. Their parents would be appalled at what they have to look at whilst they eat.

ETA--I WOULD suck it up and eat with the students for $90 an hour:rotfl:

I think you are onto something here. Instead of having lunch with the teacher day, maybe having a school-wide bag lunch dinner once a month. That way the kids and the parents could eat together and interact with the teachers. If I would be a teacher, I think I would be more open to that because you can bond with the students but also address problems to the parents if need be.

Will this fly? No, but it's an idea! :)

At what point do the students take responsibility for themselves?

I used to feel this way. I live in a city where so many kids come from homes that don't enforce homework, the kids just don't care about education and have really bad bad attitudes. Many times the kids didn't even show up to class. I pitied those poor teachers. They spent most of the class time disciplining disrespectful students which made it close to impossible to teach a class lesson.

But then I saw a movie called Stand and Deliver, about a hs teacher in California who not only got total control of his very unruly class, and inspired them to take and pass Calculus. Many of his students didn't even understand fractions when he had them.

It got me thinking of teachers I've had and my childrens' teachers. Yes, teachers have it TOUGH today with the breakdown of family units/dysfunction and lots of other social reasons, BUT I decided it was their job to INSPIRE kids, not just to teach a lesson.

I teach religious education. Half of my class never did their homework, so I decided to give the whole class ONE question to answer for hw. I made a big deal of it, waiting until the end of class to give them the question, mention the BIG QUESTION throught out classtime to get them interested. They started looking forward to it, and over a few days, every child did the homework. Then I expanded to two questions, etc.

Also, I worked to make every child feel like they mattered, which also worked wonders even with the most unruly kids.

My point is, there are WAYS to get through to kids. If a teacher doesn't have it in them to be creative with their teaching methods, then they should be FIRED.

Yay for the board who fired all those whining Rhode Island teachers. I saw the interviews with them on the news and they were a disgrace.

The teachers that were fired weren't the ones that failed to teach these students how to read and do math. There is only one school in this district that is making AYP and that is an elementary school that does not have any ELL or students with disabilities. How is firing the entire high school staff going to help the students that are still in elementary and middle school learn the skills needed so that the high school teachers can teach the concepts needed to pass the tests when they get there?

Since you compared these students to those in your religious ed class, are they ELL or are they able to understand the language that you're speaking in? Are they high school students that do not want to be there in the first place?

No, they're not, to both questions. I hesitated to add my own teaching experience since I don't have those kinds of issues, but I just wanted to make a point about creative teaching.

As for the teachers who got fired, there must have been serious problems with learning in that HS. I wish I could hear what the parents at that school have to say.

I've been following this story but still not sure where I stand:confused3 Just thought everyone would be interested to hear that President Obama is apparently supporting the school administration on the firing.

my district that I student taught with does this, we have "Lunch and Learn" parents are invited to have lunch with their child and then they go to computers and do something together, or come in the classroom and do some kind of project with the kids.
While student teaching, parents were in once a month doing activities with the kids, and they REALLY looked forward to it. And if a parent could not come a grandparents, aunt, neighbor, etc. was invited. We never had a problem, it worked out well, and I as a student teacher, enjoyed it because I got to know the parents.

That is an excellent idea! It encompasses both the teachers, the students and the parents all while doing something that everybody enjoys. I still remember in 3rd grade when my grandparents came in for Grandparent's Day and how excited I was to show them around my classroom.

As I said, none of the schools that "feed" into this high schoolare making AYP with the exception of one elementary school (again, this school does not have any ELL or students with disabilities) but I haven't heard of any plan to improve the education of the students in the Central Falls area at the elementary or middle school level. Have you?

It's also been reported that this is a very transient population so the students that took the test last year may not be the same students that are in the school this year.
