I bought a Safety First model that I'm returning because it gets the carpet soaking wet. The steam seems to go straight down to the floor not up in the air. The instructions state not to put unit on wooden furniture. Help!

That's not good! Not familiar with that particular humidifier. Assuming that it is a cool mist model, do you have a small plastic end table that you could safely place the humidifier on? I would observe it operating for a while before deciding to return it.

I have a cheap wooden table from Ikea that is my humidifier table. It's several years old and I've gone through several humidifiers. While the table is warped, its more from spills than humid air - though I think any humidifier will tell you not to put it on wood.

Anyway, I currently have a Sunbeam one that I really like. I got it at Home Depot. I was looking at Target awhile ago and they seemed to have a really nice selection, too.

I use the website "the sweet home" for reviews, and I know they review some humidifiers, but the one they deemed the best was more than I was willing to spend.

It sounds like your Safety first is an ultra sonic? We've never been able to get those to work. If the room air is not dry enough, the water just goes right down to what's beneath.

I just have the cheap vicks warm steam one from target, $15. I make sure to wash it every few weeks and soak the heating element in vinegar.

That's what the box says but I didn't even know what that meant! I can see the steam coming out but it just goes straight to the floor and doesn't humidify the room. I had an old Vicks model that was 20 years old that worked great but died on me last week. I think I will just buy a new model.

I'm always having humidifier problems. I don't like the warm air humidifiers - a pain to clean, filters to replace.
So we went with the Vick's cool air. First one was good. The rug may get ever so slightly damp in front of it so we just put a towel down. Got another one for other child's room and it soaks the rug. Sigh. I put a towel down and we live with it. Got a third for my room and soon after purchase it started making a loud, vibrating noise.
I'd love a good recommendation.

We found a great one at Costco. It's not the cheapest around but I really liked the cool mist and warm mist options. Plus no filter to mess with.

I've used a Vicks for 8 years with no problems. I just bought another one for my daughters room.

We just purchased 3 Crane Cool Mist humidifiers from Target. I bought my boys the fun animal looking ones, they are super quiet. and no parts to clean or replace. I started with a Vicks Cool Mist for my room but I found it to loud. I can not deal with the sound of dripping water, ect. So I returned it and bought the Crane for my room as well, super quiet.
