I would like to suggest starting with a copy of the Comsumer Reports--either the comprehensive copy (cars, trucks & SUVs) or the trucks & SUVS & vans issue. If you know you want an SUV/truck/van of any type, I really recommend the more specialized issue. Read it cover to cover, making note of anything you want that fits your needs in your price range. You'll get costs, reliability, resale, gas mileage, etc, etc info from that.
When that is done either talk to people who have that type of vehicle and find out what they like or dislike (and ask, "If you had it to do over, would you still buy vehicle x?") OR go test drive the ones you like, ruling out the ones that just don't feel right. Do both regardless, I just don't think the order is that important. The longer the list, the better it is to talk to owners first. *I* would want to test drive no more than 6 period.
Also research the manufactors website. Google to find discussion boards on particular vehicles. You'd be amazed at how many there are out there on specific vehicles.
Another website to look at for general info is edmunds.
After that, I'd try and narrow it down to 3 vehicles and then just get the one that I can get the best deal on.
All that being said, I LOVE my Dodge Durango. It was that or a mini van, and in the end, I'm just not a mini van mama. My sis gave me crap for not getting a van, but when her van died, she went and bought a Durango. I guess when she drove it, she must have really like it.
