After dropping and damaging our current camera...it has never been the same. We want to buy a new one prior to our next trip. Nothing fancy...a point and shoot. Want to keep it semi-inexpensive too since we rarely take pictures.

Thinking a Nikon CoolPix or something similar...

Any suggestions? Feel free to include photos that you have taken with your camera!!

There's not enough information about your needs. And here you have a bunch of DSLr owners that think $800 is a cheap kit camera...

For a basic , compact PnS camera I would be looking for a deal on a Canon Elph 100 or 300 series. Its not too unusual to see deals in the lower $100's. Their high ISO performance (important for low light) is better than many manufacturers cameras that cost $300

But I would also recommend looking at tough/waterproof cameras. Olympus and Panasonic seem to be the leaders in that category. You do pay more and the integrated lenses cannot match other cameras on zoom or low light performance. But as you know a working camera is better than any broken camera.

Personally I would avoid a cheap Nikon. They make amazing DSLr but not so much when it cones to a point and shoot. I got a cheap Nikon last year because I needed something. It's slow, pictures are grainy... I really have little reason (the occasional time 4z zoom is needed) to attempt using that over my iPhone.

But there's so many other categories, travel zoom with 20x. Bridge cameras that look like DSLr but get 30x zoom, prosumer compacts with larger sensors and brighter glass like this Canon s100 or Nikon P7100 (the main Nikon PnS worth consideration)

Hi Villains_Rock,

Can you share a little more about what features are most important to you? Also, what's your budget?

That might help some folks give recommendations.

I don't know squat about point-and-shoots these days except to say that I agree with the pp on Nikon point-and-shoots... they just don't seem up to snuff with other brands. (And that's coming from a Nikon DSLR-owner, so...) :)

We had a Cannon Powershot Elph (300 series I believe) as our last camera and I'm not sure if my son had dropped it or what, but the last time we took it to Disney we got horrible pictures. Night and indoor were really bad...and I did everything I could with settings. Here's some examples:

I enjoy taking photos on vacation, however that's as far as it goes...so I don't want to spend more than $200. I want good color and crisp photos indoors and out.

I had actually posted my horrible pics on the Coronado Springs Photo board and somebody posted right after me. Her pics were MUCH clearer and in one of the pics she is in front of a mirror with her small point and shoot camera. I thought it looked like a Nikon from what I saw...but I could be wrong.

Also..thanks for responding. I am really at a loss when it comes to camera knowledge...

I recently bought this camera -

Nikon Coolpix L810
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/nikon-coolpix-l810-black/4505-6501_7-35182759.html

and within 3 day's I took it back. I didn't pay much attention to the reviews because everyone likes/dislikes things for different reasons. BUT the reviews on this camera are spot on - Slow focus, horrible low light pics, 26x useless zoom and more.

I upgraded to the camera I had initially wanted to purchase -

Canon SX260HS
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-sx260-hs/4505-6501_7-35137435.html

and I'm glad I did!! Sure it was about $100 more but it is more than worth it, more features, more options, great zoom (20x), excellent low light quality pics and fast shooting - with kids it is very important to have a fast camera!!

If you are not opposed to buying online you can find the Canon for less than $299 at a few places but I like to "try things on" when I'm making a purchase like this so going to a store was better for me.

Thanks! I like the looks of the Panasonic!

After bad luck with my last two Cannons I am turned off by the brand. I know it was probably human error/damage, but I'd like to try something new.

Thanks for steering me away from the Nikon...I would have bought one of I hadn't asked. ;)
