Hi all:) As you know, I have been doing the C25K. I will complete the program on Saturday morning:banana: I am pretty darn proud of myself! Anyhow, I still have a few issues that I was wondering if you could help me with. You are my idols:worship: My first issue is sucking wind. Seriously, when do you learn to breath! I have to complete nearly a mile before I get any sort of breathing rhythm down. It makes the beginning of my run miserable. Also, I can't find anything to eat that doesn't totally weigh me down of leave me totally exhausted. If I eat before I run, it makes me feel like a want to hurl. But if I try to eat light, I don't seem to have the energy I need. Any advice?

First of all i want to congratulate you on your accomplishment!!!! :cool1: :cool1:

Second of all I want to say from an "experienced runner" the breathing thing is something I struggled with for a VERY LONG time!!! You might not want to hear this but for me it just took time, literally. There was a time I could not make it through a full mile without stopping to walk. And there were times well into our 1/2 marathon training that I would struggle with this, it just has taken time.

As far as the eating, this is something else that I also struggle with. DH is always on me to eat but if I eat too soon before a run or too heavy it makes a HUGE difference in how I do.

I have found that a lot of lean protien, at least 3 to 4 hours before I run works for me. A turkey wrap or a salad with turkey or chicken on it at lunch ( I run in the eves like 7 - ish) then MAYBE 1/2 an energy bar at least 2 hours before I run has worked really good.

Everyone is different and you have to find what works for you, the running.com website has a lot of good advice on food and how long before runs, and what kinds of foods too eat.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR TRAINING.

Are you training for a particular race? Just curious if we might meet you soon? I hope so.

Great questions.

Yep, it is fairly much an individual thing as far as what you can tolerate before taking off. Some of the folks I've seen getting ready for their long runs (LR) have a Gu before beginning. Me, I will eat a banana as I am getting ready or if I have more time actually I enjoy a packet of oatmeal, or half of that portion. Work on trying different things and see what works for you. I'm sure you will get plenty of suggestions on what others do.

As for breathing, that is an experiment too and maybe even somewhat scientific, if you can find it. What helped me was to get in the pool. Use your breathing as you take your arm strokes, but breathe every other cycle for as long as you can take that. I always end up breathing every cycle after a short bit. That just helped me to transition to mouth breathing and doing it rhythmically.

I've linked a site about how to breath while running found it via Web search.

I hope you can join in our fun here and hopefully we will get to meet at one of the events.

Thank you so much! I am not training for a particular Disney race at the moment :( I really want to, but being a Mainer, its a ways away. I want to try for something in Disney next year. I did just sign up for a local 5k.

Thank you for the link. It looks interesting, and I will be reading it. I really appreciate all the support I get here. You all are wonderful:yay:

I'm the same way with food which is why I have a difficult time running after I come home from work. I've waited 3-4 hours after eating and I still feel like something is going to come back up. When I run in the morning, I usually stick to drinking Gaterade and having a slice of bread. I find bread, muffins, a little bit of plain cereal tends to agree with my tummy the most.

I don't really have any advice on the breathing. I did have a friend who use to take two breaths in and then two breaths out and she said that helped her develop a rhythm while running.

Congrats on completing the C25K program! That's awesome :)

First up, congrats on the graduation!!! :thumbsup2

Now, for the eating issue, as everyone has said, we are all individuals. I eat my lunch around 11 a.m. and then I run at 12:30. I stick with a good protein to carb ratio and keep it small. Here's why...After my run, I am famished so I eat a protein bar immediately following along with a recommended mixture of Accelerade and whey protein. This fills me up after and I am not overloaded before my run. If I run in the morning, I have a hard time getting up and immediately going for my run with no food but I don't have enough time to digest either. In these cases, I usually take a GU. It gives me the energy and does not fill me up. Then I eat something hearty like oatmeal to fill my growly post-run tummy. If I have a couple hours before my morning run, oatmeal and a banana work well for me.

As for the breathing, I still struggle for the first mile (with everything, pacing, breathing, chewing gum...) but I have found that concentrating on 2 in and 2 out helps me, like Lamaze class almost. I breathe with my steps, in-in and out-out and always on my left foot.

I hope some of my tried and trues can help along with all the other advice you have and will be getting. Happy running!!!!!!!!!!!!!
