Looking for a good router

I am looking for a good router for a second computer and also for xbox.

It will be hard wired--I think thats the term--not wireless

Any recommendations?

Ok, call me technologically inept but you can hook up an XBox to your router? Is that to play XBox online or can you feed computer games into your Xbox then?

Its to get the high speed connection to the xbox to play Xbox live. Right now, we've brought a small TV and the xbox to the computer area, so we can hook up the Xbox to the cable wire.

And believe me, I am TOTALLY technologically inept

Not to highjack your thread, but... can someone explain all this router business to me, please. We have FINALLY bought a second computer. We are switching from dialup to a cable modem. I want both computers to be able to use the internet at the same time. So, what do I purchase and how does it work?

I have a D-Link DI-604 broadband router and it works great.
You can plug up to 4 computers to it and you can expand it by using multple routers.
It also has built-in firewall protection.
Cost is about 50 bucks.

Lynksis makes a good router - Wireless G - you can get the router and the card for your laptop for 100 bucks on Amazon!

I was trying to look at ours without moving or disconnecting any wires. It says D-Link on the top, but I am not sure if that is the brand. If you want more specifics PM me and I'll ask DH when he comes home. We got it at Circut City or Best Buy last year. We have three computers and XBox live connected and have never had a problem.

we will never buy another Linksys. Ours is a PIECE and I am currently attached to the DSL modum through a cable because my POS Linksys wireless router won't work anymore. It's lovely to drag a cord around the house! =)

It's a piece. We are currently looking for a decent wireless router at a good price.

I've installed several Linksys and D-Links for, ahem, tech challenged friends. Both work well. I'd buy either of these

Don't spend more than $60 and know that your Best Buy or Circuit City may have rebate deals, too.

As for the hijacker... most home routers allow up to four wired connections. Think of it as an extension cord for your broadband. As long as they are in the same room expenses are limited to the router and a network cable ($10-12). If you want to take advantage of the wireless features you have to equip the PC with wireless capability. A new one may have wireless built in. If not, you can add a wireless network card or take this route. I used this USB adapter and it works great on my brother's PC.
