looking for a boardwalk/beachy day trip from Long Island this week

I'm off 1 1/2 days this week, and I would like to do a day trip, or overnight and drive home next morning. I'm thinking beach boardwalk, I know it's spring and cool but I actually don't like boardwalk beach in summer as much as off season.

I lived out on eastern Long Island and don't really want to go there, now live in western Long Island. Willing to drive 3 hours tops each way. I have 12 & 14 yr old dd's. Three places I've never been are:

Atlantic City (never been, don't gamble) is there stuff to do on the boardwalk, bookstores, shopping, etc?
Or Cape May
Or Fire Island

We liked Ocean City MD when we went off season, anything like that, but closer?

Hi I'm from LI too! actually long beach - so a beachy/boardwalky type of place

AC- My parents go all the time, I've only been 2x. I'm not a big gambler, will play for like 5 min before I get bored. I went in the winter and we walked the boardwalk, went to the mall they have there. Went to some good restaurants. I'm sure its a lot more happening when the weather is nice. And if you go on a weeknight, the hotels are pretty inexpensive.

I've also heard good things about block island, you would drive east and take a ferry. I'd just do some research b/c i know a lot of the places close down for winter, and they might not be open yet. I've never been but its on the top of my list b/c i've heard such good things.

What's open? I know Morey's Pier has some limited hours during the weekends in April.

I just chose something close to home. Brighton Beach Boardwalk. Has the Boardwalk, stores, ocean... I've never been, my daughter was born in Russia so really wanted to go to a "real" Russian rest. And it's only 30 mintues away.

If anyone can recommend eating place and where to park sugg. that would be great!
