Looking Back on 2009

Well said by everyone. I'm new(ish) to Disboards and the Camping Board but I have found so many great people who are very accepting and helpful... new friends? Maybe.... We enjoy looking for signs now at FW of disboard members and try to say hello. Sometimes you do get down, but in looking back it wasn't that bad of a year for us and a much better year that for many. Not only did DH and I keep our jobs, our side business did better than last year and we were able to take 5 FW trips. That alone would have made it a great year. Thanks to all on the camping board for the information and friendship this year. Looking forward to another great year.

Heres to hoping a six tripper year :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

The other day someone I know from work said to me I hope 2010 is a better year for you. It made me think, and I realized that it wasn't so bad. DH had a hernia operation, they discover cancer - not bad luck, good luck it was found. He had a kidney operation to remove the tumor that was cancer, not bad luck, good luck that it was removed and he is OK. Business wasn't doing good, not bad luck, got into another business that at the end of the year did very well, good luck again selling something that we love Golf Carts what can be bad? Took a pay cut at work, not bad luck, good luck I still have a job. I hope that every negitive thing could be turned into a positive thing life would be good. We went to the Fort at least once a month this year - how lucky can you get. We made some GREAT FORT FIENDS how lucky are we.
I just know that as bad as you think you might have it, someone has it much worse and I have to be thankful for what I do have and not what I don't.
Everyone have a great twenty ten.

Very well put Lorna. Praying that this year will bring better than last for so many who need a change.

Lorna - What a wonderful outlook on the things that happened to you guys in 2009! You are truly an inspiration, taking the lemons life dealt you and making lemonade out of all of it! YaY for Lorna!:cheer2:

THE YEAR 1909

This will boggle your mind, I know it did mine!
The year is 1909.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the Year 1909 :

************ ********* *********

The average life expectancy was 47 years.

fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles

Of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower

!

The average wage in 1909 was 22 cents per hour.

The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year ..

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME .

Ninety percent of all doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which

Were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard. '

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used

Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from

Entering into their country for any reason.

Five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars..

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only
30!!!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea Hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and

Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school..

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back then pharmacists said, 'Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health'

( Shocking? DUH! )

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help..

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE ! U.S.A.!

Plus one more sad thought; 95 percent of the taxes we have now did not exist in 1909

When life hands you lemons, do shots of tequila!!!! :thumbsup2

Sounds good to me! :thumbsup2

09 was a rough year for us, but we managed to pull through and hopefully things will get better from here on out. I value the new friends that I've made through the DIS and the Fort and I am greatful for the time that we all spent together.

Here's to hoping that 2010 is better for all of us!

DALAI LAMA: REMEMBER THAT NOT GETTING WHAT YOU WANT IS SOMETIMES A WONDERFUL STROKE OF LUCK.

dh loved his job and it was eliminated last spring. now he is in school and getting a degree that he never had a chance to do when he was younger. we know what is important to us and that is what we focus on. yes, we need the fort and the gg was the best way to end the year... it was so much fun.

I have a cousin who is a few months older than me who has terminal breast cancer and has for a few years now. Somehow the Dr.'s have managed to keep her going with a fairly good quality of life for now. Every time I think how rough things can be I think of Linda and the trials she's faced. She lost her husband a few years ago in an accident and has a 10 y/o son who will lose his mom one day. It's hard to complain when you know what she's going through.

Donnie, this tears at my heart. I pray that your cousin is given enough time to do the best she can to raise that 10 yo boy into his adult years. Cancer can be such a devastating disease. Nancy had a short-lived breast cancer scare a while back that gave us our first panic attack real-life shock. Little did we know as we celebrated finding out that she did not have cancer that a silent tumor was spreading rampant through our son. 18 months later began our difficult battle on his behalf - on to a follow up CT scan later this month.

Dan, Thanks for the nice words. This girl is the lamb next to the lion in the bible. She is probably the sweetest person God has ever put on this earth and I don't just say that because of her condition. I talked to her sister earlier this week and she said it looks like we're gonna have her around for a while. Whether it's another year or another 10 years each day is a blessing for her.

Reading all the posts made me reflect on 2009. I remember saying many a time I wish this &%#@(*& year would just go. So many people lost jobs, family members and struggled a lot. Hopefully this year brings prosperity to us all.

Donnie...that is good news.
Kind of puts your own troubles in perspective when you see how someone is fighting for their life..and just wants to live long enough to raise their child.
I wish her God's richest blessings.
