"Look Ma! We're planning a Disney Trip!" - Nov 10-20 PTR (11/09 Final Update?!)

So -a quick update - the free dining dates have changed - expanded to Nov 12th. However, when I called this morning - Nov 12th wasn't open for expanding our FD dates. Checked CBR and not available either. DO we change resorts to extend FD another day? Saves us more than $150 if we do...what to do...what to do.

It's always mid-October when the heat breaks. Compared to what you got, it'll probably be great. We've done that trip 3 times in mid-October, one year was record heat...and still really not bad. I don't think you can go wrong then! Our December trip went from hot (80s) to rainy to cold (30s).

Hi there! An 8 year old and a Mom, too! I think we'll both be having fun that week! I still haven't gotten to your dates on my schedule...so we'll see if we overlap at all. I have my Lime-green mickey tags - making me easy to spot.

Great! I may do the same thing (lime green tag) so fun! I wasn't going to do a pre-trip, but reading the others is making me want to do one. I'm not good about following through on trip reports though - lol.

I thought of you when I heard about the free dining changes... I'm curious to find out what you decided.

So which resort can you book for the expanded free dining? I guess that would be my deciding factor - can you book a resort you would enjoy?

FYI - I started a trip report if you want to check it out - link is in my siggy :)

Hey, I will check it out in the near future. Pre-trip reports are hard - because there is only so much you can talk about. I also find they can be pretty dry, but I still try to read others to see any good ideas.

As far as the resort choices...well, see my next post.

Thinking of ME, huh? Yeah, I've been doing a lot of thinking, too...see the next post for where we're at right now!

True - I'm glad I just started mine, so I should be able to stretch it out - lol

We are back from a mostly pleasant vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC. Mostly pleasant because hurricane Irene stayed enough off-shore to allow us to really just lose two days to the weather, and we didn’t evacuate or anything. We ended up spending an evening in our hotel room watching Lion King 1.5 and Despicable Me. Then hunkered down for a windy, rainy night. We never lost power though, and so it really wasn’t too bad. Made it home safe and sound.

Even though we were on a vacation, it didn’t stop us working on our plans for our Disney vacation! There’s been two events recently that have thrown our plans into (somewhat) disarry:

1) The possibility that we may not be able to pick up our tickets for our package early. There’s been much discussion on the boards about this, but our plans have us going to the parks on the 11th and 12th even though our package doesn’t start until the 13th. If we CAN’T get our tickets early, then it would really screw up our trip.
2) The fact that free dining dates were moved up a day, from November 13th to November 12th. However, to date we have NOT been able to extend that day while staying at our current resort – Port Orleans French Quarter (POFQ), but COULD move to another moderate to take advantage of the extra day.

In addition, I should point out that the two issues are sort of linked together. Getting free dining a day earlier would also allow us to pick up our tickets a day earlier without the “early pick-up” issue.

The first issue is really the bigger one, because the second one is really about cost savings than anything. I suppose to first is that also as well, but when you consider day tickets at $85 a piece it a much, much bigger cost issue.

Well, as soon as all the confusion about ticket pick-up came out, I decided to start on a back-up plan. See, one of our very good friends’ mother works for a company that has a sponsorship agreement with Disney, and she is able to get day-passes through her work. She already helped us out once with passes when we went in December 2009. While she can’t get us 40 days worth of day passes (what we would need for a full trip) she was able to get us passes for DMIL – one 4-day hopper and four day passes – that allowed us to not have to buy tickets for her. (Well, a one-day ticket that we haven’t yet used.)

So, I called my friend and explained the situation, that if his mom could get us either 4 or 8 day passes, it would be a HUGE help in the off chance we CAN’T pick up our tickets. (If we had to, we could switch Saturday for our water park day, and wouldn’t need the day passes in that case. At the time he wasn’t sure what she could get, but he wrote me back this morning saying he had the tickets. I don’t yet know if he got 4 or 8 – I was too busy thanking him to enquire. However, it looks like we are all set in that regard!

So, onto dilemma #2. Getting an extra day of free dining versus staying at our preferred hotel. By moving to Port Orleans Riverside (POR) or Carribean Beach Resort (CBR) we would get that extra day of free dining – which assuming we are still paying rack rate for the room comes to a savings of about $150 on our overall package.

So, the question in our minds are – Is it worth $150 to stay at a different mod?

What it really comes down to is, why do we want to stay at POFQ? We’ve stayed there three times before , in 2006,2007,2008, and since then have stayed at Pop Century twice and AKL once. It’s not that we are against trying the other moderates, but there are certain things about the resort that we really like that we know are missing from both POR and CBR:
A) The size of the resort – we really like the limited walking distance around the resort. It is especially nice after a long day at the parks. One thing we liked about POP is that the walks weren’t nearly as bad from the bus-stop back to our room as we thought, and one of the things we disliked about AKL was the distance from our room to – well anywhere.
B) This also ties into the size of the resort, but POFQ is always, always quiet and uncrowded. It just feels like an oasis away from the constant crowds of the rest of the Disney world. Pop Century definitely did not feel like that, and even AKL didn’t always feel as quiet. It really makes POFQ feel like a place you look forward to coming back to.
C) The lack of resort amenities never bothered us – yeah, there’s only a small food court, but to be honest we hardly ever eat at the resort. (I think we only ate two meals from Mara in 10 days at AKL – and one was in our room.) The pool is as nice as any of the others we’ve used, and DD absolutely loves the Dragon slide.
D) Queen size beds – POFQ has all been recently refurbished with Queen Size beds, and we really want this. Both for us, but also for DD and DMom, who will be sharing the second bed. DMom was at first concerned that she would wake DD up, but I am more concerned that floppy bed-hog DD will be waking DMom up. A queen-size bed will reduce the likelyhood of this problem significantly. Now, POR is having a refurb done as well – and two of the mansion building should be ready with queen beds by the time we get there –so going to POR might be an option.
E) Last, but probably most important – the buses. We do not rent a car, and really enjoy using the Disney Transportation services. However, not all resorts are created equal. POFQ and POR share buses much of the time, and most important POFQ gets picked up first and dropped off first. Therefore, staying at POFQ almost guarantees you get on the first bus that comes along going to a park. In addition, we’re the first ones off the bus at the end of the day, and you can imagine that 5-10 minutes shorter bus-ride can feel like a BIG difference. In fact, we got the opposite affect at AKL – because Kidani mostly picks up first, we were on the other end of the bus situation for the whole trip, and I admit I found it a bit tedious after a week. And I remember sitting on that crowded bus going around to all the back depots at POR – and thinking how much it would stink to be trying to jam yourselves on that bus. (POP had a single bus stop – which was one of the great things about POP.)

So, after listing all those things out, we decided that, $150 extra be damned, for now we are going to stay at POFQ. I think if I hadn’t been able to get in there to begin with I would probably be more OK with trying somewhere new…but between not having been there in 3 years, not likely to be going back for at least two more, and that we are already all booked – we’ve decided not to make any changes.

However, I do have a caveat that may hang over us a little longer. WE are still hoping for a room only discount for our first three nights. Now, if that discount comes out, and it can be applied to our stay…that $150 becomes more like $100. (A 25 % room-only discount would save us $157 for the 3 nights.) On the off-chance that we can’t apply the room only discount to our room at POFQ, but we COULD apply it to a room at POR for the first two night (11/10 and 11/11) along with the extra day of free ding – well, now we’re talking a cost difference of $250 less for POR versus POFQ. And I think THAT would be enough to overcome the above negatives and get us to give POR/CBR a try.

So, what’s your opinion? Would you go for the $150 cost savings versus the change in resort? Have you tried the mods before? I’d love more feedback.

Hopefully over the next few weeks I can continue updating our day plans as well.

TTFN,
SkierPete

Wow - how great that you have a ticket connection! :thumbsup2

With that problem resolved, I'd stick with the resort you like & not worry about $150. If things change & you can save more than that, then I'd think about moving elsewhere.

The only moderate we've stayed at is CBR back in 2009. We liked the resort... the major issue for us was the lack of space which is why we probably won't be back at a moderate, at least not as a family. It's either off-site or a Disney villa for us.

I did almost stay at POR last fall with a friend, until I stumbled across an AMAZING deal that got us into BWI for less than we were going to pay at POR! I was looking forward to riding the boat to DTD... I'm also very interested in POFQ. I'm not sure why, but nothing about CSR has sparked my interest.

Subbing now that I'm all caught up. You'll be arriving at WDW right about the time we're leaving.

I hope you're right about the uncrowded party-Friday at MK because the 11th is out last park day and that's where we'll be too!

It looks like all the hubbub about not being able to pick up tickets early is just more CRO misinformation, at least so far. Cheshire Figment has been firm that guest services/ticketing at the parks haven't received anything to that effect, and several other CMs have reported that it is nowhere to be found on the Hub (cast member info portal). It is great that you have a day-ticket hook up, better safe than sorry!

Hi Pete. Catching up! What a dilemma...

Interestingly, I've stayed at POR (pre refurb) and at CSR. CSR is nice but it is a convention hotel and lacks the Disney touches you would expect at the World.

For me, I haven't stayed at POFQ; and if I had to make a choice, I would probably go for the $ saving in most cases.
Having said that....for $150 and knowing that you have a definite preference for resort, unless money was tight, I would stay at my preferred resort.

Nice BWI for less than a mod! - I'd jump on that! I don't have an issue with the space in a mod, and we even can deal with the value, but with my mom there are glad the FD allows us to go moderate. We did 9 days a POP with DMIL, and never felt too crowded. We spend so little time in the room its amazing, though

I really feel pretty confident that we'll be able to get the tickets. Disney is all about pleasing customers, and if they've established this practice to date, they propably won't stop it. I think they are just putting out the "can't do it" word so that less people will do it. If your not a DISer (or some other board) and your TA says to you "Nope you can't get your tickets early" your not even going to try, right?

As far as Friday the 11th...I don't know how uncrowded the park really will be since it is Veteran's day, and a lot of locals will have the day off. Our experience with Friday's before the parties is the park is super uncrowded in the morning, but by 2-3 pm it gets to be pretty busy.

Looks like they'll be at least 3 DIS families in the park on that Friday, as DisMomAmy will also be there. Should we try and plan some sort of DIS-meet up?

CSR holds zero interest for me as well. Not just the convention hotel, but the whole Southwest US theming. My mom lives in Arizona, I get plenty of Southwest theming when we go there. I can't imagine her dream is to visit a resort that looks exactly like where she is from.

What did you think of POR? I am just concerned about the sprawlingness of the resort and the amount of people on the buses. Our last POFQ trip, we spent our off-day at the POR pool to check it out. I had nothing against it, just didn't find it appealing as POFQ.

OK - a bit more update. Our friends mom DID get us the EIGHT tickets - so we are now back "on plan" regardless of early ticket pick-up or not.

So, I noticed its been AGES since I posted any day plans - so I thought I would summarize where I was at:

Arrival Day (Thursday 11/10): Check-in to POFQ in the evening.

Day 1: (Friday 11/11) - MK for Rope Drop to ~4 pm. Return to resort for swim/change. Dinner at California Grill 7:30 PM.

Day 2: (Saturday 11/12) - AK for Rope drop to ~4pm. Bus to AKL for Dinner at Sanaa 4:45 PM, back to resort.

Day 3: (Sunday 11/13) - Epcot for Rope drop until close to closing. (LONG day). Food and Wine, Eat to the Beat with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, dinner at Restaurant Marrakesh.

Day 4: (Monday 11/14) - Off-day, DTD, Swim, Dinner in Epcot @ Garden Grill, 5:45 PM. Possible surprise evening festivity.

Day 5: (Tuesday 11/15) - DHS day, rope drop to probably 7 PM unless Fantasmic gets scheduled. Lunch at 50's Prime Time @ 12:50 PM, Osborne Lights.

That's roughly the half-way mark. Hopefully I will get back on track with the remaining 5 days, and get them posted in the next few weeks.

Those were the two things we liked least about it. I love the theme and it is truly a beautiful resort, but our room was a long way from everything and the bus service wasn't the best. But that was a long time ago and I understand the busing has improved a lot since then. We were there for the first year of free dining and the resort staff seemed genuinely blindsided by the high occupancy levels in a slow time of year. And the bus service back then was slower to respond to shifting demand, before the GPS based dispatch system they use now.

Personally, I'd spend the extra $150 to stay at POFQ. At any of the other mods we'd spend that much to bump up to a preferred room location to be close to the amenities, so it seems like a fair price to pay to be at a resort that doesn't need a preferred booking category!

Good point - it would cost $150 for a prefferred room at POR or CBR. I should just think of it as a preferred room charge.

In other news - I JUST received an e-mail from Disney to upgrade my room only reservation from POFQ to AKL for just $29 a day + tax. The only negative is because of the 3rd adult, you have to add another $10 to that. (A $15 fee for 3rd adult at a mod, $25 at the deluxes.) So really, it's $39 a day + tax, which would come to $131.63 by my calculations. (Or $223/$233 a day for a room with a rack rate of $305/$315 - about 25 % off rack.) Something to consider, I guess, but unlikely that I'll do it. If I wanted to spend the first 3 nights at AKL, I think I could do it cheaper renting points DVC. I'm really not interested in making the trip MORE expensive right now.

My hope is maybe some other people will take advantage of it, and it will lead to opening up of that 9/12 free dining date!

It's always mid-October when the heat breaks. Compared to what you got, it'll probably be great. We've done that trip 3 times in mid-October, one year was record heat...and still really not bad. I don't think you can go wrong then! Our December trip went from hot (80s) to rainy to cold (30s).
woo hoo, good to know! we could use a break from the heat. What do you usually pack for that time of year- mostly shorts, but a few jeans for night? December is always crazy, i could be laying out by the pool in the 80s one day and freezing the next! lol

on your questions on the resort. If you really LOVE POFQ and sounds like you do- i say stay there then- sounds like it isn't worth the $150 to switch, especially when it comes to transportation. We rent a car and now with BLT our home we can walk to MK, so we forgo the buses anyhow, but i know it can be a pain to wait on them. I actually love POR, with POFQ a close second when it comes to mods. I've stayed at CBR too, but not CSR. I do agree, the size of POFQ is nicer and it is quieter (which i also like as well). So i say stay there since it is what you love.

IF it turns out the room discount is offered at POR only then it might make sense to move, but otherwise, just for the $150 savings, it sounds like you really have your heart set on staying and not moving. but i agree, more savings than that and yeah, i'd consider moving, plus trying something new wouldn't be bad. How old is your DD again? They do offer the trundle in POR too- which we've used in the past. We had 4 adults and one child in a room and managed just fine. :rotfl::confused3;)

Well, I'm a crazy northerner...so I might not be a good judge. I'll wear shorts when it's in the 70s out. GASP!

Seriously though - it was really low eighties every day we were there last year. I brought 1 sweatshirt and 1 pair of jeans (which I wore down) and never took them out. I think you COULD get some seventies and evenings in the sixties, but I would agree that mostly you'll want warm weather clothes, with the occasional light jacket and/or pants. I think you could still get rain, but we've been that week in October 3 times now, and think we've had a total of 1 day of rain. (The yucky afternoon storms should be done by the time you get there too!)

Thanks for the advice on POR/POFQ - I do think it's going to take something else coming along for me to change at this point.

PS - I just looked at you TR - we were there at the same time in 2009 - so we know EXACTLY what happened with the weather.

Awesome news about the tickets! They actually just recently talked about the issue of picking up tickets before the start of a package on the Dis Unplugged podcast. DH and I were wondering why on earth you'd need to do that, but after reading your posts, makes total sense!

As for the $150 for the rooms, I'd definitely pay $150 more for all of the reasons you listed to stay at POFQ! It would have to be significantly more in savings for me to want to switch personally, just because we loved our stay at POFQ for all the reasons you said! We loved that it was quiet and small, so you were never a far walk from anything. We loved the theming (imagine that ;)) and we don't mind the lack of TS restaurants since we are mostly food court eaters anyway when staying at a Disney resort. You can't beat being first on and first off the buses either, in my opinion! So if it was me, I'd just stay with my reservations at POFQ unless the savings would be a lot more to move resorts.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Pete - Great news on the tickets!

POR was actually really nice. Yes it was a sprawling resort but we stayed in the Oak Manor section and it didn't seem too far to anything. It just depends on what you would think is a lot of walking or not. Oak Manor to Ol' Man Island was about 5 - 7 minutes walk. And it took us about 5 minutes to get to the main complex. The food court was awesome.

I had originally requested to stay in the Aligator Bayou section but had been a bit disappointed when I didn't get my request. But I did walk through AB and it seemed much more noisy and busy than the Mansions. That's where the families stay - especially the ones with 5 people or so. I get why some of the buildings in AB is popular .... really close to the facilities....but not all the buildings in AB are close. The ones further out seemed further than the Mansions.

And even though there seems to be a lot of people staying at POR, the buses seem to do a great job getting everyone out. The longest we ever waited for a bus was 15 minutes. But we usually left early, during "peak" period and I figure they must schedule extra buses during that time to move everyone out.

But I agree with the other posters....stick with POFQ for now and unless you think that you can use the extra $150 for heaps of other things.

It sounds like your plan is coming together perfectly!!! And for $150 I would stay at my preferred resort too - that's a drop in the bucket really. I mean we are going to get MVMCP ticketa even though I hear it's not as good just because my Mom and I want to see the wooden soldiers in the parade - lol, a resort is more important than that!
