Longboat Key?

We are thinking about renting a cottage in Longboat Key this summer, but I know nothing about the area. We usually go to Destin or Gulf Shores and stay at a high rise condo with lots of things to do close by, but we are looking for something a little slower paced this time.

I'd still like to have restaurants and shopping/attractions to go to, especially in the evenings. Can anyone tell me what LBK is like? Is it mostly residential? Is there still "touristy" typs stuff nearby?

Or...we are very open to any other Gulf beach locations down that way!

I wish I could get my dad on this site for you. Longboat Key is one of his favorite places. I have only been there once and only remember it was quaint.

My coworker goes every winter for a week or two. I can ask her and/or look through her FB page. I think they spend quite of time just enjoying the beach.
