You probabally know that I am taking my girl Scout troop to WDW in June. WE had approval for the trip ages ago. The problems arise when we try to do fund raising for it.
Summer was tough for us because the council hasdetermined that we cannot fund raise during the United Way's efforts. Also, not til our cookie campain ends in Dec. So, no fundraising during Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, til Dec. 20th.
Now they have a new committee that meets once a month to approve fund raisers. Everything MUST be approved first. You must have your paper work in to them before this meeting and the activity cannot take place until one month AFTER this committee approves it. So you really have to have your ducks in a row way ahead of time. This paper work is to be turned in to our Service Unit Director first, reviews it, checks for errors, who submitts it to the Membership specialist, who them take it to this committe.
Last Dec 7, I turned in this paperwork to the Service Unit Director for permission to so a Sub Sandwich Sale. (This has been done alot in the area, and it actually easy...take orders for a couple of different Sub sadwiches at area business and factories, assemble them on a Thursday night and deliver them for thier lunch time Fri)
I had it down to have this from Jan 16 - 23because the girls do not have school on the 23rd for deliveries. After the committe met on Dec 19th, it was determinted that the dates were not far enough ahead. The membership specialist told me that it could not begin til after the 19th of Jan...30 days out from the approval. I said, ok, we will live with it. Put it down for the 20- 29th. The Girls passed out the order forms to almost 40 business on the 20th and 21st. Now I get nasty e-mails from the membership specialist that we are breaking the rules, that this sale wsa not officially approved yet but may be at NEXT weeks meeting! If she knew that it would have to go back to the committee til NEXt week, why did she tell me in Dec that we could begin LAST monday! She si threatening to turn me in to the council and have this whole trip stopped unless we just pay cash!!
By now we already have orders for almost 100 sandwiches, have the ingredients ordered, the health dept has approved our assembly place, and more orders are pouring in. Stop it? But she said we could do it after the 19th!
There is no reasoning withthe council on this. I have tried to get help from them before. They just call the membership specialist ans have everything refered back to her. Last time I had a problem, she and I e-mailed instead of talking on the phone, so I ended up printing it off and sending it to council when they said I could not prove the probelms I was having. But still, nothing was done.
If I could jsut figure out a way to earn this $$ without going through them. It seems sneaky, but I have considered doing some of this without advertising that it's for Girl Scouts, but this is a small town and everyone knows anyway. We ahve $1800 to go, total for 6 girls. WE have our airline tickeckets bought and piad for and the ground transportation. WE have $114 per girl for all 6 nights at Shades of Green and $240 for park tickets. We do have $400 right now. These prices are the best that I could do, and I cannot trim anything else. This is not including extra food money we ahd hoped to raise at the end, and they'd like to do a charector breakfast at Crystal Palace. That's it! I am seriously considering asking for area clubs like we have the Lion's, etc, for a dontaion, but I was hoping to earn most of this ourselves and save that as a last resort.
Whew. Rant over. And I know that nobody has miracles for us, but just writing gets this all off my chest.
Thanks for listening.

No advice for you. I just think it is so awesome how hard you are working as a leader. And having the girls raise all the money themselves is teaching them so much.

Now as for what the council run-around is teaching them?!

Best of luck to you and for what its worth, call the Lions etc and ask for a donation. Those girls have worked hard enough.

:earsgirl:

It sounds like it's time to demand a meeting between you, the membership director, and the executive director (CEO) of the council. If they don't want to meet, then go to the Board of Directors and the President of your council. Take all correspondence that you have submitted and any email correspondence that you have. You DO need to do something because they are yanking you around too much. This is absolutely ridiculous that the membership director is making these kinds of "threats" to you (threatening to end your whole trip). If the ED won't do this, then you NEED to go to the President. They wouldn't be there if it weren't for the troops and leaders and girls in your council. The demands they have placed as far as fundraising are usually set by UW's and have to be adhered to or they lose funding. So not much you can do there but they should not be punishing the girls because they can't get their acts together. And remind them of that! They are only hurting the girls and this is what makes leaders quit and girls not want to be involved.

Hugs and pixie dust are going out to you. I know it can be very frustrating to deal with the paperwork. Just my guess, but I imagine that the success that you are having with your troop probably makes some people jealous, so they are obstinate, just because they are green with envy! It's a very sad thing, but I have seen it happen.

I just wanted to tell you that when I was asking our juniors last night what they wanted to do with their cookie money, they said take a cruise, or WDW. They had heard about the troop that did the cruise (I think that leader posted as Girl Scout Leader, instead of Girls Scout leader). I told the girls that I had "chatted" with you on the DIS, and they were so impressed! I did explain that your girls have worked very hard for the money to do these special trips.

Anyway, best of luck to you in resolving this! I think I'd just keep going, and repeat exactly what you were told. Basically, if they want to "turn you in", answer back that you were told it could start the 20th, and that's what you did!

I am so sorry for your frustration.
I am a Brownie leader and I know how you feel. I think the attitude is that we are employees (although my own employer is wonderful) and not volunteers. I just cannot believe the bureaucracy that is involved in just wanting to do something great with the future of America.
My DSiL's troop refused to sell Girl Scout cookies because the hassle was not worth it.
Just keep in mind how you are fighting for those girls! I am a leader today because of the wonderful experience I had as a child in Scouts. We were one of the first troops in the country to earn the Gold Award in 1982. I still list that as one of my best accomplishments even though I have a Masters and have a very good career now.

Hang in There! It will be worth it!

No answers, but many "best of luck", wishes for you!

I was a scout, too, back in the "gulp", 70's. I have the most wonderful memories.......

So sorry this wonderful organization has turned to "politcal"....

I am a former Girl Scout and my DD is in Brownies. This bureaucratic nonsense about approving fundraisers is baloney. I agree with the poster who said you are treated like employees and not volunteers.

My DS is in Cubs and they don't have to go through this nonsense of approved fundraisers by their council or district level. They can choose to participate in the council fundraisers (cookie dough in the fall, popcorn in the spring) which is encouraged, or find your own fundraiser. Those cub packs really make a lot more money than our girls selling cookies. My son gets 40%-70% of the money on a fundraiser. I calculated that my daughter's troop - not even her individually - makes a smidge more that 15% on a box of cookies. It makes more sense for me to donate $40 to her troop than buy $40 in cookies because she won't see hardly any of it.

I don't mean to rant and I think Girl Scouts is a wonderful experience...my DD loves earning Try-Its, but I think the Girl Scouts as an organization need serious reorganizing.
Can you find a way for the parents to lead a fundraiser their own and have them make the direct donation to the troop?

I would start pounding on doors and making calls to someone higher up on the food chain until someone listens. Are you friends with any parents that could call? Know anyone at a local newspaper? It would make a great human interest story.

Also, it's time to play sneaky. Sometimes we have to smile, say yes and find the loopholes.

I think asking for donations from area organizations is good too.

I love that you are taking your troop to WDW!

ou could shave a little on the rooms! 114 per person at shades of green? Is that 4 girls to a room? You could stay at Pop Century or All Stars for a lot less than that - but just my two cents.

Anyhoo - can you do a letter writing campaign as a fundraiser? Have the girls bring in lists of family members and good friends of the family and send out letters for them to donate to the trip? I know I would donate.

The thing with the fundraisers is RIDICULOUS! I was a girl scout for ten years and I cannot believe they are being such sticklers.

Good Luck! Let me know if I can help!
Kelly

I honestly commend you for your tireless effort. I couldn't do what you have done.

I feel the Girl Scout Council is out of touch with us as troop leaders. We volunteer our time, energy, own money (I spent $$$$+ of my own money over the years, NINE to be exact).
I understand they are out for the whole survival picture for Girl Scouting, I get that. I know that they depend on the corporate donations to keep them alive, I get that too.

What I DO NOT understand is that you DO NOT have someone, ANYONE in your council that is helping you? You have been working on this trip forever. Why are they working against you????
It's really sad.

One idea is a stay at home tea. I'm still working out the details in my mind for how you could work it but this is what my Junior Women's Club does:

There's a little poem about sitting back to relax, having a cup of tea and slipping a dollar into an envelope and sending it back. In with the letter, we put a tea bag and a SASE and give it/send it to friends and family, neighbors etc.

Most people donate more than a dollar. You may not have to actually mention GS in the letter
but the girls could answer questions if someone asks.

Of course, you run into the problem of Girl A bringing in more than girl B and girl C's aunt wanting all her money to go to girl C but it was an idea.

sometimes it's better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission

ITA! However, our council is trying to stop people from doing that! In fact, they've directed the troops that if someone wants to just make a straight donation, they should have the person buy the cookies and then donate the cookies! The troop would then donate the cookies to a local charity.

This way, council still gets their cut of the donation!

I refused to participate in the candy/nuts sale and instead made a donation and promised to help with cookie sales. I'm on the hook now! ;)

PM sent. Send me your address. I'll donate $10.00. Any other takers???

I'm not sure how...that's like $684 for six nights, and I'm guessing two rooms. Are All Stars and PC that inexpensive?

Unless I'm totally missing something on the room thing.

Keggy:
Here is formula for our resort stay:

(Remember, the adults are paying thier own way)

6 Girls + 4 Adults = 10 travelers

SOG= $95 per room per night

5 people per room X 2 Rooms X 6 nights = 1140.00
Divide that by 10 people= $114 per person

Value Resorts for the same nights are listed as $121 per night
AND only 4 people per room, SO:

4 per room X 3 rooms X 6 nights = $1452
Divide by 10 people = $145 per person

At four people per room, we would have to find a resort for $65 or less per night. Not on Disney Property. And there is not a resort that can have 5 people per room for $95 like shades of green.

And don't forget, with SOG it is military, so no sales tax, either.

If I am figuring this wrong, because I got the value resorts rates right from Disney, let me know.

Whoa, Nelly, back the horse up.

I, in NO way wrote this asking for donations.

Now I feel bad. Sorry I bothered you all. I didn't intend to do that.
