Long Haired Cat Owners... a ?

Wondering if your cat has a problem cleaning itself 'down there', and if so, what do you do to help? We have a long haired cat, that we've had for a year now, and he has the worst cleaning habits ever. Wondering if you take your cat in to be shaved in the back, or what. We had to do this today, because he had a mess that he couldn't clean, and we couldn't either (he isn't very cooperative for nail trimmings, etc...).

Our long haired calico didn't have troubles until about a month ago. Turns out she was fighting an infection. With that out of the way (hopefully) she should be going back to her normal cleaning duties .

As part of her getting better they did a "poop chute" shave (their words not mine) and we have to clean the area for her and put Desitin on the owie.

I have a feeling that the shave may have to happen more often as she gets older (she is estimated at 6/7 years old...we've only had her 6 months) and a bit tubbier. She is a spoiled princess but we love her.

Okay, thanks! This cat is only a year old!! Likes to eat, and is a bit overweight (which, we now have under control). The shave today did make a big difference, for when we got him home from the vet, he promptly sat down and cleaned himself 'down there'. Amazing! lol I'm thinking that we may just have to take him in every few weeks and have him shaved.. have to admit though, he looks kind of funny now! But at least he doesn't smell!

Oh man, this reminds me of the time I house-sat for a friend. She had the puffiest Persian cat, and apparently he had a little problem at the potty-box one day. He had a big dried-up patty hanging from his behind! It was just huge. I ended up having to cut it off with scissors.

That summer, she started getting him shaved annually.

My DDIL calls it a "Brazilian" for her cat! She takes her in for that and a mani/pedi. You know - a spa day for a cat!

Seriously, they have it done for their long-haired cat every other month (I think that's the timing.)

My kitty Toby, who lives with my best friend because my mom didn't like him, has very long fur (we believe he is part Maine Coon). In addition to having long fur, he is rather "jolly" as we call him. He can't reach to clean his netheregions. My friend has to shave him every so often.

I had both persians and himalyans and had that area shaved when they were groomed. In between I would clip it myself.
