Leaving on a cruise in Jan., and planning to spend the night in Long Beach.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a hotel and a good Seafood restaurant for that evening ?

We will have a rental car.

Thanks ! :thumbsup2

I was in Long Beach in May and stayed at the Residence Inn Long Beach...the one near the Queen Mary. It was comfortable, clean and quiet. Buffet breakfast was included in the tariff.

I was forewarned by TripAdviser and had plenty of maps and directions; but I still got lost trying to get to the hotel. I could see it really well - just getting to it for the first, second and third time was a little challenging :rotfl2:.

The other hotel that was in the same direction/area as the RI was the Hotel Maya. I think I would have gone with the Hotel Maya if it weren't for the fact that I was travelling with my husband and 10 year old son. Rooms in the Maya is for 2 people only.

There are other hotels in the heart of Long Beach; but I didn't stay in any of them. If you're looking for a bit more action and being closer to restaurants/nightlife, then I'd look somewhere else in the heart of Long Beach rather than where RI and Hotel Maya are. But it will be convenient for your cruise.

In terms of restaurants, two Dis-ers recommended going to Seal Beach and eating at Walt's Wharf. They particularly recommended eating the Seafood at WW. It probably would have taken us about 10 - 15 minutes by car to get to Seal Beach, if we didn't stop along the way. If you're interested, I have food porn pictures of our meal at Walt's Whart in my TR and I hope I've posted the correct thread link here...the pics are towards the end of the post.

I stayed at the Hyatt Regency in Long Beach. The Aquarium of the Pacific was right next door. I know there is a California Pizza Kitchen and an Islands Restaurant across the street as well as many other nice restaurants within walking distance. It's a nice place to walk around.

When we arrived the night before our Disney Cruise back in 2008, we stayed at the Doubletree in San Pedro. They have a free shuttle that will take you right to the cruise terminal. It was very convenient and has a restaurant on site. From our hotel window we saw the Disney Magic sail right by the morning of our embarkation as it was returning to port from its previous cruise. :boat:

There's a restaurant called "Ports O Call" right on the waterfront in San Pedro that serves seafood. I've never eaten here, so I can't tell you how good the food is. The restaurant is located where I think other small shops and restaurants are located, but I don't know if the area is still kept up: http://www.opentable.com/ports-o-call

HTH!

There is a Bubba Gumps by the Aquarium of the Pacific. There is also a restaurant called Gladstone's in that same area that I've heard was very good, but have never been there.
I second Island's. It's not seafood, more of a burger place, but it's delicious! Great turkey burgers.

We have done a Carnival Cruise out of Long Beach and stayed at the Queen Mary Hotel to give us a feeling of how it was to cruise back then. We are also going on another Carnival cruise Oct. 31 and staying at the Queen Mary. If you are taking a Carnival Cruise the Queen Mary Hotel is nice to stay at because you just walk to your cruise ship in the morning.

here is a link to my Queen Mary pics. http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q140/tracyvansmith/Panama%202009/Queen%20Mary/

This one is standing on the walk way on to the front of the Queen Mary. The big round dome in the back ground is where you go to check in to the Carnival Cruises.

Downtown long beach has improved quite a bit and there are some options there. Also, if you're in Long Beach don't miss "2nd Street" which is a shop and restaurant lined area (lots of fun). Last, my recommendation to eat would also be "walt's wharf" as mentioned earlier.

One more thing - I'd recommend staying in Huntington Beach which is about 15 minutes (at most) from Long Beach. It is much more friendly and more importantly FUN. I'd stay away from Gladstones in Malibu (which is north of Long Beach). You can see and do more in Laguna Beach which is South and a a BEAUTIFUL drive once you get to Huntington. Just take PCH.

My recommendation:

Drive to Laguna Beach, stop in Huntington, take the ferry in Newport, and just walk around Laguna. Where to eat? Walt's Wharf in Seal Beach, Crab Cooker or "the Blue Beet" in Newport.

We stayed in Long Beach in August, and quite enjoyed it, although we where not in a hotel.
We ate at Rockbottom in Pine St, and had a lovely meal there, also The Madison looked nice, this is where Dinner with The Schmucks was filmed.
You probably know, but there is a free bus route within an area of Long Beach, which would allow you to travel for free to a few areas to eat, think its from Queen Mary area over to Long Beach Blvd area.
