Lodging suggestions for a Plus Sized Family

Our first and last trip to WDW was in June 2001 and since then I have been aching to return. I had to stop reading the boards because it made me so "home sick"! Well, I've decided it's time to go back even if I have to eat PB&J for a year to save the $. I am looking tentatively at early June 2006.

I am looking for lodging suggestions. It will be me, DH, DS (13), and DS (14). We stayed in a junior suite at the Swan last trip and it worked out great, but our kids were younger. They could not sleep together on a sleeper sofa again. I originally thought about the cabins, but I just read that there is only a double bed in that room. DH and I are Plus sized and need at least a Queen bed. The moderates all seem cramped. The deluxes are just a bit bigger and even the one bedroom villas only have a king and a sleeper. Does anyone have any great ideas??

A regular room at the swan has the 2 queen sized beds. If your 2 ds do not want to sleep together, you could pay the $25 extra for the rollaway each night or bring your own aerobed. Dh and I are plus sized and fit into the queen fine and we had 2 teen ds in the other queen and one on the rollaway. So we had 2 adults and 3 teen ds all in a regular swan room and it was fine.

there are a few resorts that have bunk beds and extra sq ft space. Poly has 2 queens or full and a daybed in the room or

you could try to rent outside the park

The Beach Club and Yacht Club standard rooms have two queen beds with a daybed. They also have rooms without a daybed so make sure to reserve a room with one.

The Wilderness Lodge and the Animal Kingdom Lodge have some rooms with a Queen bed and bunk beds.

The rooms with a queen and bunks are not guaranteed at the AKL and WL.

I'd suggest the Polynesian. The rooms are quite spacious, and the daybed is the size of a twin bed and very comfortable.

I agree that the Polynesian would work well as would the Contemporary and GF.

But the FW cabins might as well if you would be willing to split up at night. There are bunkbeds for the kids and one parent could take the Sico bed in the LR and the other the double in the bedroom. It's a more affordable option.

You also have the option to rent points from a DVC member and get a 1 or 2 bedroom unit. In the one bedroom, you get a King in the master, and a sleep sofa in the living room. You could add a rollaway. In the 2 bedroom, you get a King in the master and (depending on the resort) either 2 queens or a queen and one sleeper sofa in the 2nd bedroom. The 2 bedroom unit would also give you a 2nd bathroom. Either size unit would give you a full size kitchen - which will give you a place to make and eat those PB&J sandwiches!

At the WL, you can get a standard room with a queen bed and bunk beds. YOu're older kids might think they're a bit lame, but they give you some extra room.

Yes, that is an option at WL, but remember that the bunk bed rooms are a REQUEST only and you may not be able to get one.

You also might look at the CR wings. They are a bit less expensive than the Poly. 2 queens plus a daybed (approx. twin sized). Cr is undergoing a rehab right now. The south wing will be done around the end of Oct.

I agree.

Our DD18 and DD17 usually rotate on the daybed and the other Queen bed during our stays at the POLY. They have their own beds and me and the DW get a Queen Bed.

Thank goodness, as an owner I don't want to have to pay for the damage they cause as they are moved up and down hallways, not to mention the extra costs of acquiring them and maintaining them.

What about the Hilton at DTD? They allow extra magic hours, and you may be able to afford a suite there more easily, depending on what special codes you can get.

DH and I have similar problems--when we took our godkids last year the Polynesian worked very well for us--the beds are pretty good sized and the twin bed was comfortable to sleep on, even for me (I am plus sized). You may have the most sleeping options with a standard room at the Poly.

The present daybeds at the Polynesian are truly twin sized and very comfortable. My son loves sleeping on it.

However, I'm anxiously awaiting reports on the new daybeds. They are more futon style. I hope they are as large as the current ones.

We had the same dilemma! My DH and I are also plus -sized and our kids are adult-sized. Plus, they're a boy and girl and cannot sleep together any more. And my husband and I are not too thrilled about sleeping with the kids - they kick!

So, we have reserved 2 rooms at the Pop Century for our next trip. We're hoping to get a king room connecting to a standard double room. That way, we can use the king and the kids will have their own room and their own beds.

The cost is less than 1/2 of a deluxe resort room and we'll have 2 TVs, 2 bathrooms, two closets and dressers, etc. Even if we don't get a king room, at least we'll all have our own beds and hopefully sleep better!

that's exactly what we do!! get two rooms! i cannot believe it was 16 posts before someone suggested it! LOL!

the extra bathroom and tv are priceless! the value and moderate resorts are lovely... and two rooms at a value (and sometimes a mod) are less than one at a deluxe... you really cannot go wrong!

Can anyone comment on the comfort of the murphy bed at the cabins? The oldest DS snores badly and it might be nice to put him at a distance!

The Hilton @ DTD might also be an option and is considered on property, right? Although, we did enjoy the Swan last time....so many choices!

i've never stayed in the cabins but i can share what my 80+yo aunt said about the murphy bed when she stayed there (w/in the last few years)... she said it was one of the most comfortable beds she has ever slept on! she was so pleasantly surprised! she was there w/her dd's family and they wanted to give her the regular bed, but she wanted their family to be together, so she took the murphy w/the promise that if it were uncomfy she would switch and she loved it!

We've done the Murphy beds at FW, it was VERY comfy!
Last time we went to AKL, requested the bunk rooms, and didn't get them, because they say they try to 'reserve' them for families of 5. We only had 4, and with a teen boy and girl, their sharing a bed was out of the question. So, I hate to say it, but I insisted they find something for us that was more acceptable, and guess what? They did! Had 2 connecting 5th floor savannah view rooms...what luxury that was! One with a king, the other with 2 queens, 2 baths, 2 tv's, 2 balconies!
This time, however, I was ready to book connecting rooms at POR, and then my mother decided she wanted to come. So instead, we got the 2BR villa at SSR. Costly, yes, but we REALLY need the space!
