Can anyone tell me what type of locks are on the stateroom doors? Is there a sliding bolt or swing latch to prevent anyone from entering when you are in the room?

If the dead bolt in engaged you can not open the door with a KTTW card. We let our son stay in the room and told him to bolt the door and not answer the phone, googd thing he could hear us knock and was not out on the veranda as our cards could not open the door with the bolt engaged.

Ann - we did the same thing with DD and thank heavens she did not fall asleep in the room or we'd have needed the engineering staff to come open the door by force! She sleeps so soundly that she sleeps thru a loud, old fashioned ringing alarm clock 6 inches from her head! :D

FYI - based on a post I saw a long time ago about cabin stewards "sneaking" into someone's room during the night, I had thought that there was no secondary lock. Obviously either that person did not know how to use it or forgot.

We usually forget the secondary lock, and one day the poor cabin steward walked in while we were dressing! (We didn't have the "Do Not Disturb" out). Poor guy! Fortunately we were able to cover up quickly before he got an eyeful. I'll bet those stewards have seen some pretty interesting things.
On a related note, when we stayed at the Gaylord Palms for our quickie Orlando trip last weekend, I loved their "Do Not Disturb" system. Instead of a door hanger, there is a button in the room to press for "Do Not Disturb" and also for "Please Clean Room." But my admiration was quickly dampened...we had "Do Not Disturb" illuminated, and then we heard pounding and the maid yelling at the door. When we answered, there was the maid, wanting to know what time she COULD disturb us (and this was in the morning!). Sort of defeats the purpose.

My first job way back when was as a chamber maid at the local Holiday Inn. I could write a book on the things I saw (I was only 16 at the time)...some people just do not care about modesty at all!!!!

You know, from stories I have read here... It seems that many of these cabin stewards are from other countries where they simply do not have the same standards and consideration for privacy that we are used to! Seems that I have heard of many situations and comments by the international staff onboard that really reflect this. So, yes, I am now planning on keeping that privacy lock on at almost all times! And, will not immediately think that an off-hand comment is inappropriate when it might just be a difference in what is considered appropriate.

MMouse - WOW!!! btw - Were you not trained and instructed to always knock and double check before entering someones private room....

Barb - Is there a chance that your maid at Gaylord Palms was foriegn as well? I know that when I stayed at our nearby Gaylord most ALL of the staff were foriegn, and were there as part of a Gaylord training/college for the Hospitality profession. Many could not even speak basic English!!! Cheap labor for Gaylord as far as I could tell. Definatley NOT the service that I expected from a Resort of that caliber and high price.

Yes, she was foreign with English as a second language. Housekeeping was the only thing really lacking at the Gaylord, and that was amazing considering that everything else was first class. In addition to the "Do Not Disturb" incident, there was a large clump of hair in the shower when we arrived, and also leftovers in the drawers from the previous occupants of our room. I know the Gaylord is pretty new...hopefully they will get teir act together, as it was a gorgeous property.

wishingonastar.....oh yes, we were instructed to knock twice, and even call out. Sometimes people won't answer or didn't hear...can't really yell too loud because people across the hall complained you were waking them up!!!!

I have walked in on several people, even after knocking and calling out....it was very embarrassing for both them and me!! Sometimes you had someone who got a kick out of seeing your expression and would purposely drop their towel or continue with their "playing", etc. Some guests would even answer the door naked, and not think anything of it, just standing there with the door open and letting it all hang out!!!(men and women) People would be in the tub and ask you to bring in the towels to them....

We also had a house "gentleman of the evening" or daytime for that matter. This great looking young guy would always be seen entering or leaving a room with a mature older women. I doubt they were all his aunts!!!!! This went on for over a year!!

I was glad to leave that job.
