Locking luggage?

It's still okay to lock them but be prepared to open them in case you are selected for a random check. We were at MCO in November with our DDs, 5, 3 and 4 mos., and we just finished locking all of our luggage and checking it with a skycap who then brought the luggage into the airport and VOILA we were selected for a spot check. Of course, all of the locks were the same and we had 6 suitcases, so we had to struggle through finding the right key for each lock. The added security was worth it, though, and we were even selected for a random check of our carry-on that day too! By the way, I've vowed to color code key and lock with different shades of nail polish for future trips.

Parents just got back from 1/27 cruise on another line but they locked the checked luggage before the airport and didn't have any problems. I would go ahead and lock them.:smooth:

I use combination locks, all with the same combination. Have not been picked to open them yet.

We too use combination locks (all with the same combination). We haven't been picked for a check with those, but we have had our carry-ons checked.
We used to use cable ties, but now we can't bring nail clippers in our carry-ons to cut them off, so we're stuck with the locks. I liked the cable ties because we would use weird colors...that way, if someone cut them off or tampered with them, it would be unlikely they could find the same type to reseal the bags with.

but now we can't bring nail clippers in our carry-ons

NWA allows nail clippers in carry on luggage. This is from their web site:

"Items permitted beyond security checkpoint include:

Walking canes*
Nail clippers
Safety razors including disposable razors
Syringes
Tweezers
Umbrellas*
Eye lash curlers
*Once inspected to ensure they do not conceal a prohibited item. "

If you haven't flown lately, check with your airport/airline. Some of the items prohibited right after Sept 11 are now OK again. I like the idea of cable ties. Might give it a try myself.

My Q. is -what would they do with locked luggage if they became suspicious and wanted to look in it AFTER it disappears behind the check-in counter?? I can see them now just ripping the **^! out of it to get at my Hayfever pills--.

My understanding is that they will set the luggage aside and find you before opening it. Believe the protocol is for you to open it before they search. If they can't find you (i.e., you don't show up to board the plane), the luggage doesn't go either.

FWIW, I plan to lock my checked luggage only as a precaution against it coming open accidentally. I'm pretty sure just about any key out there will open my locks:D .

I always take my meds with me on the plane. I'm assuming you can get by with easily-replaced over the counter pills or you'd be carrying yours on as well.

:)

Oh, I just used hayfever pills as an example. But I did have visions of of somebody getting suspicious (for any reason) then just ripping the %^**# out of my luggage!! Glad to hear that isn't happening--.

Okay - I understand about tweezers, files, etc. being banned from luggage, but will someone please tell me how an eyelash curler can be used as a weapon?

They do sometimes tear the &#@()%_ out of your luggage, so just be aware and pack accordingly! I know they will almost always rip apart my one carry on bag when I bring presents for the Disney Wonder crew, as they seem to be suspicious of multiple gift bags packed with lots of items. Therefore, I am careful to pack them now in a way that will expedite the search. It's still a pain putting everything back together, but not as bad as it could be. A little forethought really helps, and I don't mind being inconvenienced if it will make things safer.
Also, although I haven't had my pin case confiscated yet, I am prepared in case it ever happens. I put it in a carry on sized regular luggage bag, although with a backpack containing all the other items that I want to carry on. That way, if they ever made me check it, I could lock it into the luggage bag and easily remove the backpack to take on with me.
