I have not been on a plane for 10 years. I was just wondering with all the new changes if you are allowed to lock your suitcases???

You can lock your luggage with plastic ties (I don't know what they are called, but I'll look it up). Security will remove them and then replace them with new ones after screening your luggage.

If you lock them with regular combination or key locks, the locks will be broken and not replaced. I'm glad we learned that before we left.

Look for "cable ties". They lock your zippers together. Here is an example: (You can get them cheap at any hardware store.) Make sure you pack small fingernail clippers in your carry-on to open them. We packed our clippers in the outside pocket of one of our checked bags once and that was the bag they lost! What a PITA to open our other bags when that happened...

You just need to buy TSA-approved locks. You can get them at any travel-type store - they will be advertised as "TSA-approved". We've had them for three years now and have travelled within the US and to Europe totalling 10-12 flights and have never had them broken or sawed off. The TSA has the master keys for these locks and just re-lock your luggage when they're done inspecting...

Do you want to lock your luggage to keep it closed or to keep things from being stolen? As the other posters have mentioned you can either use cable ties or TSA approved locks. However, neither of these options will keep a thief out of you luggage since they can either cut the cable ties or steal a TSA key.

Since 9/11, I have flown multiple times and I have not locked my luggage. I used to be very conscientious (spelling?) about locking my luggage prior to 9/11. But since they banned locked luggage, I have gotten used to not locking at and I have not had a problem. I have even traveled to Europe and India with a problem.

::yes:: You're right. Although we use the TSA locks now, from 2001-2003, we had to leave our luggage unlocked and also never had a problem or anything stolen (again, including multi-flight trips to Europe, so not just in US). The reason we use TSA locks is not necessarily to protect our belongings from theft (thousands of people could have that master key,as you pointed out), but because we always worried about somehow our luggage coming opened...The TSA locks likely serve little anti-theft purpose, but we just feel better :goodvibes

I have these http://www.ebags.com/lewis_n_clark/tsa_padlocks_4_pack/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=18798 and love them! Never a problem, and like others here, i lock for fear of the bags becoming unzipped. The bright color makes it easy to spot your luggage, too.

There is a link at mousesavers that offers a discount at ebags.

I have exactly the same locks from ebags, but mine are lime green! :goodvibes I lock because I have a vision of our unmentionables strewn all over the runway because our luggage zippers came undone during loading or unloading!! :rotfl:

I agree with the posts regarding TSA approved locks. Just make sure anything of value is with you on your carry-on (ex. camera, camcorder, laptop, etc). A co-worker of mine went on a business trip and left his camcorder in his checked luggage :sad2:. And, as you can guess, it was stolen.
