Hi,
We are getting ready for our trip in June and we want to shoot good photos of the fireworks show. We already have a full-size tri-pod, but we want something more compact to carry in the parks. We thought about a travel size tri-pod or a monopod. Then I had the idea of storing it in the locker, so that we wouldn't have to carry it around, so size wouldn't be such a big deal. We haven't bought a travel size tri-pod or monopod yet and we were wondering how large the lockers are at Magic Kingdom. Also, any suggestions about a monopod or tri-pod would be quite welcome! The monopods that we have found are at least 16 1/2" long folded, and the tri-pods are too short.

I posted this on the tips board and didn't get any responses, except my sister bumped it for me, so I thought I might need to try here.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know how much this will help you, but according to Birnbaum's 2005 Walt Disney World The Official Guide, in the Magic Kingdom section on Lockers (pg. 90) it says: "Certain oversize items can be checked at the Station Break desk (the spot where lockers are paid for)."

I don't know the locker measurements, but we were able to fit a backpack in there.

I think, and I can double check tomorrow, but both should be able to fit the MK lockers. I can ask guests services tomorrow for you :)

I took my travel tripod and just set up on top of one of the garbage cans along main street. It stands about 9 inches extended so my camera was about chest high. My pictures came out pretty good considering I was having to hold a ziplock baggie over the camera cause it started raining on us.

This is EXACTLY what I did as well. I set up on a trash can with a travel pod.

I have used a tripod before. YOu dont want to use a monopod as it still moves too much. With fireworks you have to use a slow shutter (automatically done if you use a lower end camera) and ANY movement will cause blur. If you use a tripod, sometimes people will bump it and risk damaging your cam.

Get the mini one. they work GREAT!

I'm in the same boat, I also don't want to be carrying around my SLR and lenses all-day (Especially while on any of the mountains). But, still know that I will want to take advantage of the many great photo-ops for my g/f's first WDW trip!

I am truely torn on how to handle this... grr.

Well as much as I hate carrying tons of stuff around, I carry my camera everywhere. NOthing is worse than being somewhere in WDW and then wishing you had your cam and not.

Agree... But do you find it cumbersome to manage on rides? Especially the Mountain of the Splash variety... I don't want my baby to get wet!

I dont find it really cumbersome. I carry it in the case and take it out as needed. I put it in before getting wet. I like to photo on rides (no flash of course). Before I go into the parks, I simply put a couple of sandwich bags in my case and simply put the camera in the sandwich bags or freezer bags when around water. NO problems.

Yeah, that is probably what I will end up doing... just have a little (probably irrational) fear left.

Thank you for the GREAT suggestions! We have decided to get a tri-pod. We bought a monopod yesterday, but we may return it. I agree on the not being able to hold it still enough. My husband went outside last night and shot some really good pictures of the moon, but when he put it on fireworks mode, the exposure time was an eternity to try to hold a monopod still, and the pictures were terrible. Godwyn, your photos are AWESOME! We are hoping for the best photos ever this year.
Thanks again!
