Just as I closed the back door behind me (so the cat wouldn't get out while I finished cleaning out the car from our weekend trip) I thought, "Thank goodness I remembered to unlock the door!!"
Or so I thought. Boy, that's a sick feeling...reaching for the knob and realizing you are outside in the bitter cold with no key, and only a sleeping child inside. I banged on all the doors, rang the doorbell, banged on the window of her room - but she was absolutely dead to the world. I went next door and thank goodness I saw my neighbor was still awake. She was home alone and almost didn't open the door for me, but finally did and I was able to call a locksmith. 45 minutes and a hundred bucks later, and I'm back in my warm house, vowing to hide a key outside tomorrow and give my neighbors a spare - something I've been meaning to do for a couple of years now.
It could have been worse - at least I was still fully dressed, including my shoes, and I had my heavy winter coat in the back of the car, easily accessible.
Oh, and I'll be making some phone calls tomorrow to the four 24 hour locksmiths I called who didn't answer their phones tonight. And I'll be telling them what I think of their service, and that I'll be calling their competitor and telling my friends about them as well (not that I've ever had anyone I know personally locked out, but still...)
Whoo Hooo!!!! I'm back inside!!!!

Thanks - I feel so much better knowing that someone on the DIS knows and cares that I am warm inside my house!!!
I was on a solo trip and went to get ice from the machine in the hallway. I was wearing nothing but a long t-shirt (that I sleep in) and shorts. I had no shoes or socks. I grabbed a prepaid phone card instead of my key card, so imagine my surprise when I tried to return to my room! Fortunately I found an outside phone that connected me to the front desk, and they sent housekeeping to let me in! If I didn't find that phone, I would have had to go to the front desk dressed so slobbily! Lesson learned to never do that again!
sorry that you got locked out though! brr...
