Any suggestions on where to take my photographer college son in Boston? He loves photographing animals(Bronx zoo is his favorite) and has been to the Franklin Zoo in Boston. I was trying to find someplace else. I'm going up for parents weekend and would love to surprise him with a new place to shoot.

He also loves abandoned buildings.

So what are your favorite spots for photography in Boston? TIA

Has he been to the New England Aquarium? I've never been there and I think its fairly small, but there's also Stone Zoo in Stoneham. We don't visit the city too often, so I'm not sure about abandoned buildings. Hopefully someone else will have some suggestions for you. I imagine with all of the brick buildings in the city, there are some great locations. Have a great trip!

If the weather is nice, head up to Rockport. Great harbor and lots to photograph there.
You could head down to Cape Cod and do a lighthouse tour.
Take a Boston Harbor tour and see the city from the water.
Definitely do some night shooting from the Cambridge side of the Charles River looking at the city. Head over towards BU. Great view of the city from the BU Bridge.
You can also take a tour of Fenway Park.
Take a walk along the Freedom Trail. There are lots to see.
I like shooting Fanuiel Hall at night (plus in Quincy Market there is a GREAT place to get Chowdah at Boston Chowdah Company, get it in a bread bowl!!)
This time of year in fall foliage season. You can take a drive up to New Hampshire, Vermont or Maine.
York Maine is about an hour and a half drive and has one of the best lighthouses in New England.
Portsmouth, New Hampshire is about an hour drive. There are a few harbor tours there that go by a few lighthouses.

Not a ton of animals, but I had fun shooting penguins at the New England Aquarium. (Still in post-processing, catching up).

You can take a tour of Fenway park.

Lots of history on the Freedom Trail of course.

Harvard and Harvard Square can be very interesting places to shoot at well.

If you're going to stay right in Boston, just about everywhere you go will have many nice photographic opportunities. I agree with anywhere along the Freedom Trail, and I'd recommend the North End also, around the streets and over by the waterfront, where you can see the USS Constitution and the Zakim Bridge - particularly beautiful at night. The old cemeteries are fun, too.

I second the North End for architecture and the waterfront. Boston has endless photo ops just doing a walkabout!

Thanks for the ideas. Last year we did the Freedom trail, hit a bunch of cemeteries, and did waterfront and North End. Boy I love Boston! Hmm never thought about heading up North with him. Off to investigate! Thanks and keep the ideas coming!

If you have the time, and don't mind driving a little bit, I would also suggest going to York harbor in York Maine (about 1 1/2 to 2 hours North) where you can find Nubble Lighthouse (one of the prettiest and most shot ligthhouses in the world:

You can spend hours just shooting the many sights you see there:

Or, if you don't feel like driving so far, there is also Salem, Mass which is only about 35 - 40 minutes above Boston. With Halloween approaching, this might be a good time to see it. See the town's old charm:

Or maybe take a tour of the actual House of the Seven Gables:

In fact there are lots of old "witching" sites to see there, most of which can be toured:

Salem also has a nice little coastal section where you can see (and tour if you like) the old Friendship ship:

both of these places offer hours of shooting unique shots

Great photos! Hmm Salem is an option too.....
