Loaning/borrowing on a Nook?

I'm trying to decide between a Kindle and a Nook for my Christmas list. My future SIL just got a Nook, and her mom and sister are both getting them for Christmas. So I'm leaning toward the Nook if we could all share our books to cut down on the cost of downloads.

So if you have a Nook and have loaned/borrowed e-Books, tell me if I understand this correctly:

If you buy a book, you can loan it to someone for 7 days. During that time, they can read it, but you can't. After the 7 days, they lose it from their list, and you regain access. Right so far?

What I don't know is whether you can then loan the same e-Book to ANOTHER person for 7 days. The wording in the guide is unclear whether you can loan it to one person at a time or only one person EVER.

I'd also like to hear any experiences borrowing ePub books from the library. Thanks!

I hope someone can answer this question. I'm one of the people who bought the $99 refurbished Nook from Overstock. My order is still "processing" so I hope it goes through. Anyway, my mother has one and she says we can share books, but she isn't sure how to do it either.

From B&N FAQ's:

Yes. Your NOOKcolor allows you to lend your favorite book to a friend for 14 days. You will not have access to your book while it is lent out (similar experience with paper book) and each book can only be lent out once. You will automatically receive the book back when the lend period expires.

The library is pretty easy. I actually have bought so many 0.00 priced books directly from Amazon I never had time to actually read the items from the library. (our library only does a 7 day loan on epub books)

I don't know many things about the loaning "Lend Me" feature since I don't have anyones email that I can "borrow" from. If anyone is willing to try it, I'll let a title go out on loan.

Hmmm... thanks. I was hoping that meant lent once to each person, but it doesn't sound that way. So the lending aspect is not that big of a draw after all. I'd have to choose which friend I like best. :rotfl:

Just a thought for those of you who want to share with a family member - You can have more than one nook on the same account - I know at least two but I'm not sure of the max and I checked the user guide and help and there's nothing noted. The only trick would be who is managing the credit card that the account is linked to. Plus you could all be reading the book at the same time. You must have a CC linked to your account. :goodvibes

max is six devices (nooks, nook apps on iphone, computer, and so forth.)

Just beware, publishers allow very few books to be used with the Lend Me feature of the book. If you look in the nookbooks section at bn.com they show specific books that can be used with this feature.

Also, any book is tagged with the LendMe icon on your nook. Out of the 30 or so books I have purchased from BN, I think 4 are LendMe capable.

ok, so very few books are available to lend on the nook, but, if you have more than one nook on your account, both nooks can use the books you buy, right?

My question is how did you find so many free books Cindy B? Only thing I ever find is just samples, or portions of the book. Any advice would be appreciated. :)

I had to replace my nook under warranty this summer because the case cracked (this is a common problem BTW). I held onto the old one until the new Nook arrived (I was being very buget minded waiting for the box and packing materials so I could ship it back without going to the store to buy any ) . Anyway, when the new Nook came I authorized it, and for a day or so the old one was still authorized and still in my possession. As soon as I authorized the new Nook it started downloading all my books. Soon I had two Nooks and both had all my books on them and I could read and open all the books I had bought on both Nooks. That's how I knew you could have more than one device on the same account.

lol, you're a smart cookie! :thumbsup2 that likely wouldn't have dawned on me.

My daughter is on my Nook account. We read our books on my Nook and on our Droid phones with the Nook app. She can read anything I download and vise versa.

I'm in facebook group of people with Nooks who share. I've borrowed several books and lent out several.

Although there are not a ton of books with the Lendme offer, I have found that alot of the books I am looking to borrow did have this feature. If you find other boards out there, people are great at lending books out to perfect strangers. You have to remember that once you lend a book, it can not be lent again. It goes out for 15 days and it can not be lent again.

I have also started downloading form libraries to get my books for free. You have 14 or 21 days to read and it goes out of your nook. It is a cool feature and I think I have used the library more in the last 3 months than in my life.

Like a previous poster has mentioned, if you are all on the same bn account, you can share all your books.

Happy reading

We don't have a Nook, but a Kindle. The customer service is outstanding. Daughter downloaded a book in error, no issues getting the refund. They even wanted to let us keep the book of no charge, but I said no thanks.

Screen messed up, called and had a new Kindle on my doorstep in less than 24hrs. I didn't even ask for it to be fast, just wanted it fixed.

They have made me a loyal Kindle customer with their customer service :)

I am completley in the dark about both Nook and Kindle. Do you have to have WiFi at home in order to download books? My mom is a fanatical reader but does not have WiFi.

My mom wants one of these for christmas. I know she was looking at the Nook, and then e-mailed me a link for Pandigital Novel. Has anyone heard of this one?

No. You don't have to have wi-fi. They have a function called side-loading that let's you tranfer the files.

Or, if you know that your Mom is not very computer savvy and there is cell phone service in her area you could go with the 3G version. A little more pricey at first, but the service included is for the life of the device, then she'll have the ability to buy and download books where ever she is - even in the middle of nowhere. I have the 3G and love it - I've bought books all over the place the beach, my back yard, for that matter I've even shopped, bought and downloaded books for my kids in the dark of the night in the middle of the woods a mile from the nearest electrical outlet. :thumbsup2

One of the easiest ways to find free ebooks, is to check out http://booksontheknob.blogspot.com/. Also, usually whatever you come across of Amazon for free (which I think is easier to search for free books since you can sort by price) - just check Barnes & Noble and it will usually be free there too. Also, when you are looking at a free ebook on Amazon, look at the bottom of the page where it shows "Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought"- usually they will all be free as well.

I agree with Cindy that there are so many good free ebooks out there that I am having a hard time getting though all of them. Don't bother looking in the B&N "free" ebook section- it is worthless for entire free ebooks, it is usually all samples. www.nookboards.com is another place to find out about free ebooks.

Have fun!

Thanks for the information! Am I correct in my understanding that you can also surf the internet through the Nook if it is the 3G version?
