Living in Florida

I am considering a move to the Ft. Myers Florida area. I am familiar with the area as a tourist, but I would like to know what it like living there. I there anyone on these boards that currently lives there or has recently?

I don't live there, but I'm there every other month...I leave Monday for another trip.

I enjoy the time that I spend there, but I don't think that it would be my first choice as a permanent home. I love the laid back attitude that prevails, Sanibel is a 20 minute drive, and the Barbara Mann Center has some great shows. The news (almost all weather) would drive me nuts, I would tire of chain restaurants pretty quickly, and I'd miss Nordstrom's (Bell Tower just doesn't do it for me).

There are some very nice newer neighborhoods that have been built, but some of the older areas have grown pretty shabby. I've also heard the schools aren't the greatest.

My grandparents (pretty recently deceased) lived there since 1975, so I visited there often enough. It's very laid back there. Lots of senior citizens, but not everyone is. Fort Myers Beach is really nice. My uncle still lives there and he loves it. In fact, he just recently came back here for a visit and couldn't wait to get back to Ft. Myers. I always enjoyed going there, but I never lived there, so I can't say if I'd like that. But judging by my relatives, it's a very nice place to live.

Thank you for the input. Does anyone know which areas there are better than others? My work would be in North Ft. Myers, but I would be willing to live in a different area. I have one child in grade school and two more on their way in the next few years, so better schools are important to me.

I think Barry Hom lives there. He moderates the Universal board.
