Live from the Second Baltic

Sounds like a great tour Cindy:thumbsup2
Can't wait for our turn:cool1:

Laurie, you will have a great day. Jakob had a plan for our day but he kept offering us alternatives and was very focused on keeping us on schedule while making sure we saw as much as we could see. A great recommendation from you!! There is a ton of construction going on in the city, and he and the driver navigated that very well.

One other thing that I wanted to mention: there are a lot of wind farms on the way to and from Berlin. We live in a city so I don't know how prevalent they are in the US. But we saw so many of them driving in today (and again, obviously) driving back now, and they are striking. They are so futuristic looking and also so almost majestic. Look for them on your way.

Seeing on the tracking maps that the Magic is on her way to St. Petersburg now, having left Warnemunde a little while ago... Hope everyone on board had a great day exploring Coastal Germany or Berlin!

Was very impressed with the reviews on trip advisor for Berlin Walks:thumbsup2

Will look for those wind farms:woohoo:
Haven't seen any here in VA so they will be new for us too.

Where did you go for lunch? We'll be looking for a fast lunch too.

This is a fantastic trip report!! Been following it daily, which makes me jealous of people that are lucky to be cruisin the Baltic

Does anyone know the cancellation policy for tours through DCL? I'm really starting to doubt our DCL excursions. I booked a private tour for St. Petersburg but I really don't know if we should keep the ones we booked through Disney for the other ports. We do not plan to do Berlin.

The only tour we did through Disney was in Copenhagen -- the Tivoli and Canal Tour. That was great being in the park prior to it opening and being able to get on anything that we wanted. StP we used Anastasia, and in Germany we did Friends of Dave, the other three ports we DIY'd (Rick Steeve's Scandanavia guide book) and think that was a perfect combo. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Hello from a fellow June 24 Baltic cruiser!

We stayed on ship today in Warnemunde and we basically have the boat to ourselves, though not many activities going on. The Internet is working pretty well, though!

Cruise is wonderful. Weather has been picture perfect. A few tidbits of info from me: cruise has 2000 passengers, 1600 of whom are from the US. We got to port at 10am departure day and were able to upgrade from Cat 11 to Cat 5 for $1290. Also, did laundry today and didn't need any quarters...all machines used cards.

Well I'm off to try some toad racing.

We are on board and the weather has been fantastic. Actually should have packed more warm weather clothes. Pools are getting lots of use. Berlin was great by train, did the Sights and Sounds tour and it was well worth the price.

Doing St. Petersburg with SPB Tours so anyone that is in our group please leave a note at our cabin 7510 or meet us at the debarkation location.

Ours says can be changed or cancelled up to 3 days before cruise departure date.

yes, correct as that was happened to us when we booked excursions for PC then we changed our mind while cruising on magic and told us about cancelled up to 3 days before cruise but we didn't know that rules... so I have to be careful this time....

Hi All:

Greetings from a day at sea. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!:cool1::cool1: Incredibly, the computers on board are working as well as they have worked the whole time we have been on the trip Go figure. My blackberry has no signal at all, but I have a surprisingly good signal here in the internet cafe. They are doing a seminar on shopping in St. Petersburg in the Promenade Lounge behind me, so I'm half listening as I type (but don't tell DH).

I have to say that this day at sea is incredibly well timed. We were exhausted when we got back to the ship last night (which we did, for those of you driving to and from Berlin, with plenty of time to spare). Except for DD 12, who went straight to Ocean's Quest, we all crashed in the rooms for awhile, before dinner. We were starving but almost too tired to eat. The AP show gave us a second wind, and we went to the 10 pm (changed for Berlin) show in the Walt Disney Theatre, Heath Hyche. He was very funny, although some of the stuff was the same as last year (can't fault him for that). After that, we went to Rockin Bar D for a new musical comedy act, Smooth E, which was pretty good and different and not what we were expecting. After that, we crawled upstairs and to bed.

We picked up an hour overnight so now we're 7 hours ahead of EDT and in the Baltic Sea. Slept until 9:45 (so excellent) and woke up to another clear blue sky. Forecasted highs are in the low 70s today. DH and I have a couples massage scheduled for 11:45, and they are running a spa salon special (express hydrating facial, scalp massage, hair treatment, wash and blow out for $89) which was too good to pass up, so I booked that. Tonight is Villians night (which is casual dress if you're not dressing up as a Villain, not semi-formal). The DDs and I will be dressed all in black. There are 2 port lectures today in addition to the shopping lecture: Tallin at 11 and Stockholm at 2.

Tonight is night 6 of 12. So we're approaching the halfway point. In case it's not totally clear, we are having truly an amazing time. All of the stresses of home disappeared pretty much within 24 hours of being on this ship, and the ports have ranged from charming and fun to fascinating and eveything in between. I am really excited for St. Petersburg, which was the port that made me want to do this cruise. But everything, on board and off, has been so great. I LOVE THIS CRUISE!!!!

Sorry, days at sea and good internet connection make me giddy. And I've only had one large latte from Cove so far. :rotfl:

Not sure what to expect about internet/blackberry in St. Petersburg, but I'll keep in touch as best I can.

So jealous of the great weather you are having Cindy!! It is way too hot here in VA! Even with the huge thunderstorm we had yesterday.

Can't wait to hear about St Petersburg! Also the main reason we booked.

Laurie you're up early! I came back to the internet cafe because I realized I forgot to answer your question about where we ate lunch in Berlin. We were on the far side of Museum Island (away from Checkpoint Charlie). It was a panini place called, incongruously, Bagels and something, and it was on what seemed to be a main street running parallel to the old Jewish quarter. Lunch for the 4 of us plus for our guide, including beverages, was 23 euros. We told our guide that we wanted him to take us somewhere he would go for lunch on his own, and it was the perfect easy thing.

I've realized that we're really not spending too much money in the ports. In Oslo, as I said, the Oslo Pass made all the sights very reasonable. We didn't pay for transportation either, so it was just the food, and I think we spent about 200 kr, all in, not including the price of the pass. In Copenhagen, we paid for the taxi, the canal boat, the coffee and snack stop and the ice cream. The taxi with tip (we were a bit generous) was 100 kr, the canal boat tour was 120 kr and the ice cream was 65 kr. The only thing we charged was the coffee and snack, and with tip that was 145 kr (on the canal in Nyhavn, so probably a bit more expensive than usual for tourists).

In Berlin, we didn't go into any museums. Of course we bought the private tour, but it was less than it would have cost for the 4 of us to do any of the Disney tours, even including tip. So our only additional costs were lunch and the coffee stop before driving back to the ship.

A word about money in Tallinn, for those on the 4th Baltic: you apparently can't take money out of the country, so there's no Estonian currency to buy on board and we couldn't buy it back home. There is a currency exchange place in the market that is near the cruise terminal, apparently. No idea how common ATMs are. I suspect you can use Euros, and maybe dollars, but we don't know yet. So that's on my mind for Friday, but we'll see.

We have a lot of onboard credits from booking 2 rooms with Dreams Unlimited and also getting the early booking thank you credit from Disney. We are pretty much decided to add on more DVC points, and you get an onboard credit of $500 if you had 160 or more points to AKV or Grand Californian. Since we're not using Disney in any of the ports, we've been having fun with those credits on board, hence all the spa treatments. The couples massage was really nice. I had really one of the best massages I've had in quite a long time. Anyone who is thinking about booking one, ask for Boris. He was terrific! DH liked his guy a lot too, but I can't remember his name (both are from Serbia, and DH's masseur was on his first Disney cruise).

Heading up for an outside lunch at Topsiders!

Cindy, thank you for the excellent live reports. We are looking forward to boarding on July 6th. Have a blast.

Thanks again,
Nancy

Cindy...I can't thank you enough for your wonderful reports !!

They're the best I ever read !!!

Wondering if the Stack has planned activities for the teens, or do they just hang out ?

Anybody able to book a 2nd Palo dinner that you know of ?

Thanks again :flower3:

Hi Cindy,
DO you know whether the terminal in Dover had wifi? Teens care about such things...sorry.

When we were at the Dover cruise termial on the 6th, my son searched on his I Pod Touch, and didnt pick up any networks.

. . . I've had in quite a long time. Anyone who is thinking about booking one, ask for Boris. He was terrific! DH liked his guy a lot too, but I can't remember his name (both are from Serbia, and DH's masseur was on his first Disney cruise).

Maybe Liviu? I've gotten treatments from both and they are both excellent!

Good morning!

Quick answers: the teens definitely have scheduled activities in the Stack, often until 2 am. But I think there is a lot of hanging out as well. On the first evening, they met to discuss what types of things they wanted to do, so they helped plan their activities.

Not sure about 2nd dinner at Palo. But on our night, we had an 8 pm seating, and the restaurant did not fill while we were there, which made me think that there was room to make another reservation on top of one you already had.

Agree with Andrew's post about internet in the dover departure lounge. I didn't specifically ask, but it didn't look like there was.

Also a correction: our head waiter Mario (from Serbia and great) said that 1,200 passengers went to and from Berlin with Disney on Monday. My DH thinks that when Brent mentioned 400 passengers, he was talking only about the first train and that there is more than one train. I have no idea if he's right about that, but Mario was quite clear about the number of people. He said early seating Monday evening was empty and that he, and others, were pulled out of the dining rooms to help with crowd control when the train got back to Warnemunde.

OK, so yesterday afternoon flew by, as I think sea days do. The weather remained really sunny but cooler (you needed a blanket if you weren't in the sun). My salon treatment was really nice. I found out they have a teen package on port days (manicure, pedicure and mini-facial for teens only) that DD 14 is doing this morning. I spent the rest of the afternoon at the adult pool, relaxing and reading. We were all very lazy and it felt great.

The Villians Tonight show was fine but not overwhelming. The special effects were very good, as were the costumes. It was more of a way to showcase some Disney villians rather than a show with a real plot (although there was a semblance of a plot), but some of the asides were very clever and funny, and several of the numbers were fun. Afterwards, we had a Villains Night menu in Parrot Cay. Nice menu -- duck, steak, swordfish. All good. The Villians Ball was packed not just on Deck 3 but from above on Decks 4 and 5 as well. Lots of character Villians showed up, but it was a little too crowded to do much unless you had gotten there early enough to be in the thick of it.

The DDs went off to their clubs and DH and I went to see John Charles in Rockin Bar D. Guys, if you can, do not miss this show. Rockin Bar D was absolutely packed and he got a standing ovation, the first one I've ever seen in there. It was an absolutely fantastic show.

So we are expected to arrive in St. Petersburg at about midday. We went ahead another hour last night. The sun officially set at about 10:45 (we watched it right before we went to the show, and it was practically perfect in every way), but it seriously never got dark. It was weird. The sky never even turned dark blue, it just got a deeper shade of royal blue. We went to sleep at around 1, which was already 2 am ship's time because of the clock change. And sunrise was supposed to be at about 4:30, I think. So I can't imagine that the sky got much darker than it was when we went to sleep. Really weird and amazing, and it does sort of mess with your time clock, because it just doesn't feel so late. We left dinner after 10 pm, and it was still sunny. That just makes you rethink what time it is.

Here are some things about Russia I learned last night: we get landing cards and have to fill them out and take them, our trip tickets and our passports with us. We get a passport stamp when we return to the ship later today, and that stamp lets us go in and out after that. Does not sound like there will be any distinction between people leaving the ship with a Disney tour and people who have booked a private tour, in terms of debarkation times, which are estimated at being between 12:15 and 12:30. Lumieres is hosting brunch from 9-12:30, and we're planning to eat there right before we get off the boat. Dinner seating times are changed this evening: regular rotations are at 5 and 7:30 instead of 6 and 8:30, and Topsiders is serving a buffet dinner from 4:45-7. There are a series of Russian performers coming onboard to do a show up on Deck 9 at 10:15 this evening. So they are clearly working around the expected schedules.

We are doing Russia with a private tour guide named Masha who came very highly recommended and seemed terrific via email. We are spending this afternoon and evening with her (folk show, dinner and late evening drive around to get the white nights feel) and all day tomorrow, until around 7 (and we might stay out for dinner tomorrow evening -- we're not sure yet). I will do my best to report as time and either internet or blackberry permit. It looks like another very sunny day today with a forecast high of 80. I think this may be the last sunny day, but it's hard to complain when we've had such a good string of weather!

Thanks for this wonderful thread. It is very informative. My family and i were suposed to go on the first one but we just couldnt afford it... This is a good substitute! Thanks!

Did you buy your guide lunch in Berlin?
Yes, I was up a little early yesterday and decided to hop on here to see how you were doing:cool1:

One thing to add from the first cruise is that they will not let you through Russian immigration either day unless you show proof of a booked shore excursion. We had to show our ticket each day in addition to the landing card on day 1. sue
