Live From the 9/27 Magic

I am so glad to see that you all made it! However hectic it may have been, I am glad you have set sail, and are looking forward to the rest of your cruise!

HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME!!!!!!

I hope that all of you on the Magic this week have a wonderful time. Don't worry -- be happy.

After having been through the first in this series (the 8/28 "10-day" cruise), I can only say that I certainly hope DCL is writing all this down and definitely has their procedures locked in for any future hurricane seasons. We are sailing the CA-FL Repo cruise next August, but we are not worried. Having been through it already, we know whatever they do (whether chaotic or not), in the end they will take care of us and get us home!

Hey Marcy and all 9/25-9/27 sailors, just remember........A bad day on the Magic has to be a whole lot better than a good day at work".............LOL

If anyone runs into my two friends Rose & Janet, they are sisters, please tell them Cheryl says hello!
They will probably be collecting pins somewhere on the Magic!
Have a great cruise!:sunny:

I hope all of you have a wonderful time on the Magic. We just got off of the September 18th cruise (they let us all out on Friday night and took everyone to the Dolphin--I am sure someone else has probably posted what happened on last week's cruise, I just go back late last night since our flight was canceled and then canceled again and we finally got a flight last night to come home).

We had a nice time, but it wasn't the cruise I had dreamed of either. It was our 5th cruise, and the other 4 were great. I know that these are unusual times, so it is best to just make the most of the time you have on the ship and know that the next cruise will probably be smoother sailing!

Thanks for posting. I hope the crew is doing alright. They were excited the night we got off (Friday) because they were going to have a 'party' for the CM onboard as they sailed to safer waters. I think it was well deserved. I hope they were able to get some rest.

DJ

When we pulled into Port Everglades on 9/6 (from the 8/28 cruise), both the Wonder and the Magic gave the crew a deck party on the crew deck. They partied until 2 a.m.! When I asked the CM the next morning if that was usual, they said no -- but because they didn't have to prepare the ship for oncoming guests that day, they threw them a well-deserved party. So that was nice to see. They were very stressed toward the end of our extended cruise because of all the schedule changes and uncertainty. Don't forget, this is new for them, too. Our server has been there 6 years and he said he'd never seen anything like this.

Thanks Marcy and NCRedding!!! Wishing you guys a wonderful vacation...you've weathered it well and are to be commended.

Pixie dust to all on your sailing!

Barbara

Sorry for all your trouble, have a great rest of the week, best wishes for smooth sailing!!

Any word on stopping at CC Friday 10/1?

Anxious to know if we will be stopping Friday 10/8.

Hi guys!

We had a great day at sea, although I am exhausted after a very long day with two very tired yet energetic kids!

No, we are not stopping at CC -- only at Cozumel and Costa Maya. Tomorrow is Cozumel, then Costa maya, then another day at sea, then home.

We had brunch at Palo's today, and my only complaint is that I fear stepping ont he scale next weekend. Our server, Sasha, was so attentive that we felt guilty. (And ladies, he's not particularly hard on the eyes, either. :D ) The food was divine, although the desserts were only okay. Since leaving New York City 10 years ago, I haven't had a good brunch until today. I do fear that jumbo shrimp might be placed on the endangered species list following my brunch, though.

We ate in the dining room this evening, but probably will not do so again. The late seating is just too late for my kids, who usually go to bed at 8:30, and dinner tonight was too difficult to repeat. I'm not really sure how to handle the tipping situation if we never eat in the dining rooms again -- any suggestions? I know the servers live on tip money, so we will likely just tip the recommended amount, but it just seems so odd. I've never taken a cruise where we didn't eat in the dining rooms before, so this is new to me.

They had a matinee of the Golden Mickeys today -- great show, great time (2:15 pm) for young kids. My kids were both dancing in their seats. And I hate for anyone to think I do nothing but look at men other than my husband, but I highly recommend paying attention to the show for when Tarzan comes out; even my dh had to comment, in his most manly voice, about the actor. :D

Tomorrow is our character breakfast; the kids are looking forward to it. Today was tea With Wendy (cute) and the Oceaneer's Club had dance lessons with Snow White; what 4 year old can complain about that? :D

Marcy

P.S. I just met Mike Morizio, who was sitting next to me in the internet cafe. He's neither old, grumpy, nor foolish. ;)

Hey Marcy, have you checked with Guest Services about changing your seating to the early one? I imagine with all the changes the ship isn't full and they might be able to accomodate you. Doesn't cost anything to ask and it might make your cruise more enjoyable.

So glad you're having a good time. Anyone with small children DESERVES being pampered in Palo! If you have the regular Animator's Palate menu, try the shrimp and crab wrap. MMMMMMMMM

Hello: Glad you are on the Magic and having great weather. Thanks for all the posts about this week's cruise. I was on the 9/18 Magic and wish I were sailing with you. Just booked a cruise on the Wonder for next year and plan to book our 50% discounted cruise soon. Enjoy the rest of your cruise. Jan

Hey everyone....another 9/27 Magic cruiser here...

We also thought that Monday was extremely chaotic....here is our very long saga.

We flew into Tampa to visit relatives on Thursday and picked up a Budget rental...we were on the rental line for over an hour due to a lack of cars...thank goodness we had one reserved....on Friday at 1:00 pm we headed to Port Canaveral from Tampa. We had ressies at the Radisson for Friday night. While listening to the radio they said that Jeanne was heading to the East Coast of Florida...I thought I had better check with DCL to make sure everything was a go...I thought for sure that we would be able to leave PC on Sat, but felt the Wonder folks would be diverted. Much to my surprise I listened to the recording that said ship was delayed and diverted to PE.

Well, now what do we do....where do we stay....oooooo...sorry...we are just pulling into Cozumel and I just looked out the window and see faces looking into our ship from the ship next to us!!! Startled me for a second!! Ok, so I look at my husband and say....what do we do!!! Do we cancel, do we drive to PE on our own now, do we drive ourselves down on Monday???? By this time we were only about 20 miles outside of WDW so we decided to stay there for the night and figure out what we would do. I called CRO (central reservations office) and was told they were completely sold out....quite frankly I did not believe it so we headed there anyway. Went to Pop Century and waiting on a long line to just ask if they any availability. I explained to the CM when got to the counter that we were now displaced cruise passengers and needed a place to stay. He said they had room...but now I am thinking maybe we should just stay at WDW and ride out the storm and then take the DCL transportation down on Monday...that way DCL is responsible for us. I felt lost without interenet access because if I had it I woudl have checked for hotels in Fort L. and drove down that night.

Anyway....we opted to stay at the Polynesian...we figured if we are going to be locked in our room I wanted a bigger room than Pop Century. Luckily CRO offered us a room at the Poly. I thought DCL might do something for the cruise passengers who now had to find accomodations for 2 nights but they didn't. I was not going to let it worry me. We stayed at the Poly for 3 nights and I have to say that riding out a hurricane is a scary thing. All night it sounded like a freight train was coming in our room and our room on the 3rd floor had soaking wet carpeting from the slider door in. We were thankful that was all that was wrong. I truly feel horrible for anyone who had homes and what they must have been going through the last several weeks...... we were in lockdown at WDW for 24 hours. We were told not to leave our rooms. On Sat they had bagged breakfasts and lunches that you could purchase and bring back to your room for the next day. They consisted of a piece of fruit, juice box cookie, chips, etc. We were advised to purchase bottled water.

We still had our rental so we went to a grocery store outside the park and it was chaos...we opted to jsut go to the hotel gift shopand purchase some snacks and water there. DCL contacted us in our room on Saturday and explained what would happen. They strongly advised us not to take our own car to PE. We could take the bus from the Poly...they said it would leave at 9:30 am. I asked her if that was for sure and she said yes. Ok, we will take the DCL bus since it leaves at 9:30...that will give us plenty of time to get to PE. Well, when we talked to the cruise rep in the lobby of the Poly she told us that the bus was leaving at 1:45. I asked when the buses from airport were leaving because we also had a car to return to Budget and not sure what location we should leave it. She said those buses were leaving all morning until 2:00 pm

Well, we checked our bags with DCL at the Poly but decided to take the airport bus since we had to drop the car off. There were many people in line to get buses and were about 150 people back in line. We got to sit up front and thought the bus was nice and cool. We left at 1:00 pm from the airport. A few people were coming to the front of the bus to say it was very hot in the back....there was nothing the bus driver could do as he checked the bus earlier that day and everything was fine. We stopped at the rest area for a 30-40 minute break....and when we were back on the bus we found out t hat we had to wait an additional 40 minutes because there were going to bring another bus for us. People were starting to get very upset about having to change buses. The majority felt that the temp was not hot enough to warrnt a new bus and we only had 1.5 hours left. We were quite cool upfront so I can't comment on the heat in the back. People were starting to get off the bus and wander around the parking lost and others stayed sitting in the back of the bus which did not make since to some of us since they said it so hot back there. If you could sit on a hot bus for 40 minutes parked, why couldn't you sit on a hot bus while it was moving??? Anyway, a new bus finally came and we switched buses but everyone wound up sitting new places....yeah...we were on our way!!!

We got to PE at 5:00 and the Wonder was in port already, but the Magic was not...we saw her out in the harbor. The bus let the Magic passengers off and then took the Wonder pax to another terminal.

Once inside it was chaos.....people were sitting, milling around...DCL staff was very compassionate but they had no real answers as to when we would board. What upset me the most is that there was no organization in lining people up...it was a free for all. A line was formed by pax, not by DCL and people were cutting the line, forming new lines, etc....it was nuts. I could not understand why DCL did not have stantions set up for lines....they did have the experience of PE from the last hurricane. There were people who came on later buses who needlessly waited on the line that stretched outside in the heat when they could have been seated inside in chairs. They just got on the line like cattle. We stood in line for over 40 minutes and then they started the carryon baggage screening. That took another 30 minutes from where we were on line. Then it was another long line of about 20 minutes until we checked in and got our KTTW cards. We kept a good attitude but many people were very upset in how things were handled. Other than the line formation I don't know what else DCL could have done better. They did try to accomodate everyones needs.

They did board from Deck 2 and announced your name. We were on late seating so we had a snack up at topsiders and then went to the dining room at 9:00 for our dinner seating. As the others have said that first night dining was less than organized because of the late boarding, early seating diners were still in the dining rooms when it was time for the late diners to go....we were seated at a table that had space and did not have our reg servers...it felt so good to eat a great meal....we had very little all day. They did indeed have a welcome variety show onboard with Rich Purpura and the characters......I belive it was even put on twice that night. It was very empty but still very good. They even had 80's night that night...but we popped in and it was empty...everyone was so tired after the long day.

We set sail at 12:15 am....the Wonder left much earlier. One piece of our luggage was missing until 2:00 am....I had called GS and said it was not delivered and they said they had a few pieces with no tags there. After walking most of the decks looking for our luggage I went to GS and described my bag....they had it at GS but it still had our tags on it with our stateroom number clearly marked!!! Even the CM could not explain why it was there. We finally could get to sleep knowing we had all our bags. Well, almost, when we opened our missing bag we found that our shampoo had exploded within the zip lock bag and all our toiletries were cover in shampoo....thank goodness for ziplock bags!!!

And that finally brings us to the end....yesterday was great...we lounged around the adult pool all day and caught a movie....met our regular servers and dined with two-foxes and her husband from the DIS...great people!!!! We didn't have any DIS meet but I hope to meet a few onboard somewhere!!!

Sorry this is so long...but it felt good to explain it all!!!!!

CM's onboard are keeping the Magic alive and everyone seems happy. GS had a sign that said ship was full....but it seems much less crowed than normal to me!!! I personally know of two families that cancelled so I really do not believe that the ship full!!!

Oh well, on to breakfast!!!!

MJ

Thanks for the report mmouse37 :wave2:
Now that all the hassle and stress of the hours/days pre-boarding are behind you, hoping the rest will be smooth sailing !
Have fun on your cruise !

What a great report! Thanks to all of you who have posted for taking the time to let us in on the process. Hope you can really enjoy the rest of your week.

I am not taking the time to read all the other posts above right now - I will when we get home. I don't want to spend valuable shopping time on the internet. We are going on the Fury Catamaran at 12:30 and it is 9 now.

It is a very nice day here. We just had a character breakfast that was fun even though the characters didn't come until most people were done eating (there was a miscommunication about the time of breakfast being earlier). Anyway we are all having a great time! Sure it has been a little different than planned but we are enjoying it. Our kids have t-shirts made by their grandma that say the ports we were going to. We put a checkmark by the only one that we are really going to. All the crew and characters have thought it was great. We are having the characters sign it and it will be a great memory.

Ok, off to shopping and sailing. :Pinkbounc

MJ AKA mmouse37,
Do me a favor if you can - I had a family of 3 that was dropped off at the Radisson on Friday WITH LARGE LETTERS INDICATING THAT THERE WAS A MANDATORY EVCACUATION NOTICE ON THE FRONT DOOR and they too were in a panic as to what to do, where to go etc - fortunalty they did contact me and we were able to get them out of here into safe quarters in Orlando - their names are Susie, Michael and Sarah Bevan in room 5622 -----I did get to talk to Susie for a few minutes yesterday, but I was wondering if you get the chance if you could check on them - Susie is a dismember, but a newbie - Just let them know that we hope this cruise went great for them and to keep in touch.
Sorry to hear about all the confusion - I can only imagine since I was here during Charley, Francis and then Jeanne, but I am a native so knew about what to expect.
If you ever get into a bind again - keep the shop and my cell number in hand. It helps having a safe port here in Florida.
Anyhow glad all is under control now and have a great time.
Always
Shirley

Hey all. We spent the 18th-24th at WDW. Called DCL at about 1230 on the 24th to confirm all was a go......they said "yes", so we checked out of WLV and we drove to the Radisson at port only to hear from the staff there that the Magic would now be delayed...blah, blah.

Tried to get a room through CRO Friday after we got to the Radisson...."nothing available on site at all" is what we were told. The CM was a great help and went above and beyond by finding a room near Sea World for us. We didn't take it because I got on Hotels.com and found a room at the Wyndham in DD for a decent price. Road the hurricane out there....cool, but kinda scary (not too many of them in Colorado!)

We decided to keep a rental car and take our selves to Ft. Lauderdale, on Monday, with after speaking with several other cruisers, was a good decision. We got to the Sheraton at the airport at about 1230 on Monday for the "chaotic checkin." By the time we got to port at about 1900, it was getting ugly. Lots of adults acting like two year olds, getting nasty with CM's, and lots of drama. That was starting to irritate me more than the lines.

Utimately, DCLs communication was pretty poor, as I got different answers from almost all the CMs at the 1-800 number, and when I had called DCL on Friday the 24 at 1230, they had already left a message at my home in Colorado at 0930 Mt time saying there was an itinerary change due to Jeanne (1130 Florida time, but I didn't check my messages at home until Monday...too late!) So, a CM had left a message at my home an hour before I called and the CM didn't know there were any changes.

All and all, we went with the flow, knowing that DCL got in a crappy situation, and they were doing what they could do at the time. Hopefully, nexts week cruise will go drama free!

If your checking in while onboard I wish you and your family a wonderful and safe trip!
