Live from Saratoga Springs - 9 days and 8 nights - 3/20 - 3/28/2011

I think all four of us dozed off on the bus back to SSR from MK on Monday afternoon. Something about the steady hum of the bus and the gentle rocking - plus having had a yummy lunch earlier. On the walk from the bus to the room, we decided to skip going back out to DHS and instead make a trek to Downtown Disney later in the evening.

We all enjoyed just hanging out at the room. I love having the space that we aren't all on top of each other. And I will say that if we had more than four in our unit for too many days, I think it would feel crowded. It's nice as it is for the boys to have their room, us to have ours, and then the living room / balcony be for whoever. If someone was sleeping in there and had nowhere else to go, that would be a bit much for that person, I think. However, if we had little kids who didn't take up as much space (LOL), it might be better - or if we weren't actually staying in the room much. SSR is definitely smaller for the general living area than Hilton Head is where we've spent the last two spring breaks including grandparents and didn't feel crowded. Of course they have those long balconies which makes it really nice to have that extra space.

Anyway, around 6 p.m. I decided I would go workout. I joined a local health club about a month ago and have been faithfully going to exercise, and while you do a lot of walking at WDW, it's not the same as walking for exercise, and since I don't have a little kid to carry, then there's no upper body workout in the parks, either (LOL). I haven't used a fitness center at WDW before, so that was a new experience. It's a five minute warm-up walk from our building to the fitness center, and then I did my usual routine. Walking back afterwards, I was glad I had done it because I felt more energized than I had earlier in the afternoon.

Around 8 p.m. we headed over to DTD, taking the footpath that goes by Congress Park. We breezed through the Christmas store, peeked into Mickey's Pantry, and then spent some time in the Lego tent - they are expanding the Lego store, so they've put up a tent building by the Once Upon a Toy store.

We stopped by the Pin Trader shop to look for a Snow White's Scary Adventure pin - DS14 wants to find one since the ride is going away. I don't know that I've ever seen one but we are having lunch today with a pin guru, so we'll ask her about it. While there, we found a Cinderella's Golden Carrousel pin with the 40 yrs symbol - we got it since they've already changed the name to Prince Charming's Regal Carrousel - plus it has the 40 yr symbol. We did think momentarily about the limited edition set of 8 pins for the 40th celebration but decided at $76.95 to wait til the end of the trip and see if we had any money left :) In the meanwhile the cast member did her job of showing us the non-limited edition 40 yr pins so we got one of the Mickey ears.

We stopped at Ghiradelli for a piece of dark chocolate (oh golly, the boys don't like it so DH and I enjoyed theirs for them - good thing I went to the fitness center earlier - LOL), and then made our way through Pleasure Island to the Wetzel's Pretzels. There was a really long line, but they were all waiting for ice cream, so we went right to the register to order our pretzels - and get our 20% discount for being DVC Members! We sat and listened to the musician performing there for a while and then headed back to SSR.

All in all, a great Day 2!

Tuesday started out later than Monday, thankfully! A nice sleep-in for all of us who needed it. DH went for a run and was back just around 9 a.m. when the boys were getting up. We didn't have a plan for today except to meet friends for lunch at Whispering Canyon over at the Wilderness Lodge, so we took our time getting going. The boys decided they wanted to go to MK for a bit, so we headed over there just after 10 a.m. I remember in the old commando days wondering how could folks just be getting there at 10 or 11 a.m. - now I know!

The boys split off from us and did their thiing while DH and I enjoyed "window looking" and a few things in Tomorrowland. I like the Stitch's Club 626 - it gave great energy to Tomorrowland. In fact, one of the CMs at the PeopleMover commented that it's always a party in Tomorrowland now! Stitch, Chip, and Dale were out dancing the macarena and other assorted dances with the guests.

We met the boys in front of the entry plaza at 12:45 and took the launch over to Wilderness Lodge. Our friends arrived around the same time as we did so we were able to get checked in for lunch. It was skillets all the way around (except DS14 who isn't much of a meat eater and can't have corn on the cob with his braces). We enjoyed the meal but decided we would rather go there for breakfast than for lunch. After eating, we visited the gift shop which is my favorite of all the resort gift shops. I found a 40 yr jigsaw puzzle so we got that for our 40 yr celebration souvenir.

We took the launch back to MK by way of Ft. Wilderness and then got a bus back to SSR. Lots of tired folks with their tired toddlers. Now we're just resting and relaxing and may be heading out to Epcot later. Our friends at lunch today had extra FPs for Soarin that they gave us.

I am really enjoying reading along....sounds like you are having a PERFECT vacation!! :goodvibes I really appreciate the pics from SSR- only 13 days until I'll be seeing it all in person! :yay:

Oh- and I LOVE that gym- I worked out there a couple of years ago, and it is AMAZING!!! So much in their circuit, and barely anyone there! :worship: I'm hoping Timmy will want to sleep late one of the days so I can check it out again. :goodvibes Kudos to you for working out on vacation! :thumbsup2 It DOES make you feel good, though- I agree!

Sounds like you guys are having a great trip and sounds like the boys really enjoy WDW! They are at a good age for the trip, young enough to fully enjoy being there and old enough to strike out on their own!

You really summed it up! They are at the perfect age for being here - so many people ask us how in the world we get our teenage boys to enjoy being here - I think it's just all the practice they've had! They've been coming here since January 2000 multiple times a year (usually weekend trips, not longer ones like this time). We find it's a great time now to get them "unplugged." As much as I wish DVC resorts would have wireless internet, I'm glad it's just me on the laptop in the bedroom (well, DH trades my old decrepit one out for his). We don't have iPhones, etc., but they do enjoy their online games (just ask DS13 about Pirates online or Toon Town or Wizards 101... I admit fault in getting him hooked because when he was 8 and Virtual Magic Kingdom was just launching, we got him an account to play - he's been hooked on that type of gaming ever since).

Anyway, they do enjoy being here and they enjoy the independence we give them - having earned the right to it (and just as easily can have that right revoked). We won't let them go to another park than us, though - probably won't until they are in college ;) We learned to let them have some freedom from our experiences on the DCL ships. They have proven themselves to be trustworthy, so we feel fortunate.

We also love how they truly "get" the magic - and they don't want to ruin the magic for anyone. Like with Push the trashcan (who I saw today!) or knowing how some things work "back stage" - DS14 got to participate in the YES (youth education series) program as a 7th grader and got to go behind the scenes at the Haunted Mansion and also at DHS. He's also done the Behind the Magic of the Steam Train tour which was fabulous - it was his 10th birthday present from us.

We have been listening to not only the DIS Podcast (which we love love love), but also WEDWay Radio which is two guys who are brothers who do a Disney podcast, usually something to do with Disney history. DS14 enjoys it because of all the info he gets as well as their sense of humor; I enjoy it because as the mom of two brothers who love all things Disney and are soaking up the Disney history, I can so see them continuing as Disney-philes into adulthood.

We let the boys "split apart" from us this morning for a while, but on Thursday and Friday we're having our family "split apart" days - where they get one-on-one time with a parent AND they get to plan the day. We usually go til 2 p.m. and then meet back up. What's funny is when they were younger and we started doing this, we were often in the same line for the same attraction at the same time :)

I'll post our Tuesday update in the a.m. - no pictures worth uploading today but I will say the Flower and Garden festival is beautiful even at dusk. I hope to get some good pics in daylight over the next few days.

I am loving your trip report. I have 2 boys - ages 15 and 11, and they too, still love going to Disney. They have gone since they were little, and still get so excited about our upcoming trips. I love your idea of splitting up on certain days - one parent and one child. I think we will try that in May. Thanks for the great idea!

There are multiple benefits for splitting apart parent-child - one is that when you're staying in a smaller space (we started pre-DVC!), it gives the children a chance to be away from their sibling for a bit - which makes them so much more pleasant to be around later in the week :) Plus the child gets to do the planning - a great skill to learn!

The rest of our Tuesday went like this: rest, snack, think about going out, snack, rest, finally put our shoes on and back out. We went to Epcot, getting there around 7:30. We used our Soarin' fast passes, then DH and DS14 rode Spaceship Earth while DS13 and I did some pin trading and bought our Flower and Garden festival pin (we liked the DVC member one best).

The boys had FPs for Big Thunder from earlier in the day so we thought we'd monorail over to the MK as they were open til midnight. When we got up the ramp, the CMs reported that the monorail was down for a bit, so we decided to skip MK and head back to the resort. About the time we got to the bottom of the ramp, the monorail was back up - but we decided to not take a chance on getting stuck on the monorail - read too many reports (LOL). Anyway, the tram to the parking lot was there and it was one that had doors on it, so we took a ride around the parking lot :) Then the bus back to SSR for a relaxing rest of the evening. The weather was great to sit out on the balcony for a while. DS14 and I also worked on our jigsaw puzzle and got a lot done.

Today is Wednesday, Day 4 - which means we're nearly halfway done. We have lunch plans at 50's Prime Time Cafe at 11:15. The boys don't like it so we're giving them lunch money and they are on their own at DHS for a while. I want to finish up at One Man's Dream, and I think we'll head over to the DVC Welcome Home Wednesday at 2 p.m. I like that it is earlier in the day. And then I'm going to have us walk through Epcot to get the bus so I can see part of the Flower festival as we go thru the International Gateway and such.

It is a bit overcast this morning so we'll see if we need those poncho's or not.

Doesn't it just go by so fast, 1st the anticipation of just getting there and boom you're already at day 4! Enjoying your trip report, I favor OKW and SSR and we always get a 2 bedroom, and have been in Congress Park the last two trips, we had a blast.

I also have a 14 year old and since he's an only child we always bring his best buddy with us! They go off on their own and then rejoin us for lunch or dinner! That's the time I choose to take the pictures I want without being rushed!

Ready and waiting for more of your TR......

Excellent TR so far! We still have 3 months to go and I can't wait to get back. Your TR isn't helping the wait but it does bring back a lot of good memories from previous trips. Very well written and entertaining, keep it coming!

Love your report!! It sounds like you are having a relaxing time! Thanks for sharing your wonderful family with us!!

Thank you all for your kind words and interest in our trip report. Being able to do a "live from" report really helps me keep up with what all we've done and is a great way to chronicle our vacation. Plus having free internet as DVC members is GREAT. (My teens are wishing it was wireless...)

So now it's Wednesday evening and I just pulled cookies out of the oven. Our villa smells wonderful. I do have to tell you that it took until today to locate the list of things we are supposed to have in the villa - including two pot holders. We didn't have any, so I'd been using a folded over dish towel. We also didn't have plastic storage container nor a cookie sheet. I thought we should've had those items but didn't find the list. DS13 found it today, taped inside one of the cabinet doors - I guess I hadn't noticed it when I was looking for everything. But I do know I didn't overlook the other items. Today was Trash/Towel day so I left a note about pot holders, hoping they would leave one for us, but nope. So I called housekeeping about 7 p.m. (after going through to see what else was missing) and they sent over what we needed. So as a lesson to everyone, do make sure to locate the list of items you're supposed to have and do a quick inventory - and call housekeeping for any missing items!

Now on to our day! The only thing we had planned for today was lunch at the 50s Prime Time cafe and Welcome Home Wednesday at the Boardwalk at 2 p.m., so we knew we'd start the day at DHS. Again, we didn't get up til later in the morning, but were out the door just after 10 a.m. We had to wait for a bus for more than we've been waiting, but less than 10 minutes.

The boys didn't want to eat with us, so we gave them some cash and their park tickets and told them to meet us at that Sorceror's Hat at 1:25 - so off they went. DH and I wandered through the shops and then to One Man's Dream to finish looking at the exhibits. We didn't have time to see the film (15 minutes) before our lunch time, so we wandered around til we got to the restaurant. The food was ok - well, a little better than ok, but not as good as say, Cracker Barrel. I had the chicken and DH had the meatloaf - what we both normally get at Cracker Barrel. Next time we might get the salad or sandwich. It wasn't busy and our server mostly left us alone except to refill our drinks.

After lunch, we went back to One Man's Dream to see the film. I love this film about Walt Disney and his dream. One thing he said was how with the theme parks, things would keep changing, even the trees would keep growing. It was interesting that he said that because we had just remarked about that a few days ago at how much the trees had grown around here!

I did some pin trading and we looked through some more of the shops and then met the boys to go to the Boardwalk. We took the boat over to the Swan/Dolphin and walked over from there as the Atlantic Dance Hall is on that end. We did notice that there is no boat service to the Yacht/Beach Clubs right now as their dock is being refurbed. They have bus service from DHS, and of course you can walk from Epcot quite easily.

Welcome Home Wednesdays at 2 p.m. is so much better than 4 p.m. in terms of scheduling - it is right during the heat of the day (by the way, I didn't need those ponchos I carried in my bag all day!) and is a good hour to rest and have some cracker jacks and lemonade and be entertained by the first lady of the Disney Vacation Club - DeeVee Cee herself. She's hysterical - we had seen her before. We didn't win any prizes but we did get the white DVC member hats which we like so much better than the red ones.

(I'm going to upload some pics, so I'll go ahead and post this and be back later!)

Cindy, we always take our wireless router with us giving us wireless connectivity through out the villa.

So to continue... After the DVC meeting, we sent the boys ahead to Epcot.

I wanted to spend some time looking at and enjoying the Flower and Garden Festival, so they went on to spend that same time in Innoventions. I enjoy Innoventions but not that much, so this was a good solution. DH and I walked around the world showcase beginning at the International Gateway and eventually making our way to the front of Future World, leaving just the arc from the UK to Canada for another day. Here are some things we saw along the way:

We love how the miniature train area outside of Germany always decorates for the occasion:

Norway:

And just because I like it:

As you can see, the Flower and Garden festival has some beautiful decorations!

To end our day, DH and DS13 headed back to the resort directly while DS14 and I ventured to complete his quest for using all the posslbe forms of Disney transportion - so we monorailed to the TTC, then ferry-boated over to the MK where we waited for a bus to bring us back to SSR. And with that, our adventures for the day were complete!
