Live from HHI - March 1-4

Wednesday, 3:30 Update -

Well we've driven all over the Low Country this morning. Started out early (left resort around 9:30), drove over to Savannah via Bluffton and had lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. It was an outstanding meal. Food just like my grandmother used to cook. Being from the South, I can speak with some authority - there are two kinds of Southern Food, the kind you get at Mrs. Wilkes, which admittedly is heavy on the grease but tastes delicious and the kind you get a Paula Deen's, which is more uptown Southern Food. My grandmother would never cook Paula Deen's kind of food but cooked Mrs. Wilkes kind everyday of her life. We had fried chicken, beef stew, meatloaf, BBQ pork, mashed potatoes au gratin, rice, gravy, candied yams, black-eyed peas, turnip greens, rutabagas, corn, butter beans, potato salad, cornbread dressing, waxed green beans, cucumbers, biscuits and cornbread. For drink we had sweet tea and for dessert banana pudding or cherry cobbler. The funny thing is yesterday President Obama was in Savannah and ate at Mrs. Wilkes. Mrs. Wilkes staff only had 10 minutes warning they were coming. Well DW sat in the very same chair the President sat in.

The secret to eating at Mrs. Wilkes and not having to stand in line that long is get there early. We basically ate no breakfast and were at the restaurant by 10:30. There were about 15 people in line ahead of us and we were eating by 11:00. As you are standing in line take the time to talk to the folks around you. It turns out the couple behind us was from our same city (Raleigh, NC). They sat next to us at our table and we had a great time talking to them. Don't be shy, you will be sitting with strangers at your table and eating family style. We enjoyed talking to everyone at our table.

Well after stuffing ourselves, we paid and rolled out of Mrs. Wilkes. We decided to forgo walking any around Savannah as we've done that many times. Instead we drove over to Beaufort and walking around the historic area some. Unfortunately it is still cold here and we tired of that after a very short while. We got us a coffee and headed back to the resort.

Hopefully we'll get to take one last walk out on the beach shortly. But it sure would be nice if the sun came out.

There is something not right with how they built the HHI villas. We had a Grand Villa in 2002 and had two kids with us. One was 18 months, and one was 15 months. They were doing what little kids do - running around. Nothing out of the normal, but the people below complained like there was no tomorrow. I always found it strange until I found this forum and saw others complaining.

It is the wood floors in the Grand Villas. I've never really noticed any noise except on one visit when we were under a grand villa. The noise was just the normal movements of people from room to room and children moving about, but it echoed in my room. It didn't really bother us but it was definitely more noticeable then having a carpeted room above us. There are only 5 studios and 1 bedrooms under the 5 grand villas at HH, so odds of getting one are slim. In about 35 visits, we've gotten that type of studio once, and we would never turn it down as we like the locations of the GV's.

We have been in studios in main building and have had elephants rooming above us. It is the wood construction-wood floors that carry the noise.

Friday, 3:00 Final Update -

Well we're back home :sad1:, but it's only a month away until we return again. Let's see where I left off yesterday. For dinner last night DW didn't want a whole lot to eat since we had lunch at Mrs. Wilkes. But I was wanting some shrimp and grits. Previously the best shrimp and grits I had at HHI was at Kingfisher. So we walked across the bridge and were immediately given a table. But low and behold shrimp and grits were no longer on the menu. I was so disappointed. We decided to leave because I didn't see anything else on the menu I wanted and DW didn't really care. So we headed back out but had to run the gamut of real estate salesmen at the door. What is it with these guys? Seems like every restaurant has them waiting for you. If not real estate it is timeshare sales people. Do they really think people care anything at all about buying timeshares? :rotfl2:

So we walked back across the bridge, got the car and decided to go to Hudsons. I knew they didn't have shrimp and grits but at least I could get a final serving of oysters. I have to say as much as I like Sea Shack, the oysters at Hudsons were better, not quite as greasy. DW got steamed shrimp which were okay, but they needed to be cooked about 30 seconds longer. They were done, but a little difficult to take the shell off cleanly.

Well that's it for our quicky trip down to HHI. We head back in a little over a month for the Verizon Heritage Golf Tournament. I just hope this isn't the last year for the tournament. Verizon isn't going to sponsor it next year and they haven't found a replacement yet.

Thanks for the report! We'll be there from April 5-8th and again in June.

Glad you had a good time. ( But crossing fingers for better weather in April )

I finally got around to uploading the pictures I took down at HHI last week. I apologize for there not being that many, but the weather was really not very good for taking photos. What I did want to point out though were the pictures of the beautiful ornamental cabbages. The link to my pictures appears below in my sig. I still haven't figured out how to include pictures in my posts like DVCMike.

Your pictures are great. I love the ornamental cabbages - Thanks for sharing.

next time you are at HH and are in the mood for shrimp and grits you might try the Red Fish Restaurant {I think that is the name}. it is close to Sticky Fingers bar-b-que. The first time we ate there several years ago, I got the shrimp/grits and it was so good that I almost had to lick the bowl. :rotfl::rotfl:

we went back there on our last trip and I was really looking forward to the shrimp/grits again, but it wasn't as good although it was good.

I'm going to put Sea Shack on my list for our next trip.
