Wednesday, 3:30 Update -
Well we've driven all over the Low Country this morning. Started out early (left resort around 9:30), drove over to Savannah via Bluffton and had lunch at Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. It was an outstanding meal. Food just like my grandmother used to cook. Being from the South, I can speak with some authority - there are two kinds of Southern Food, the kind you get at Mrs. Wilkes, which admittedly is heavy on the grease but tastes delicious and the kind you get a Paula Deen's, which is more uptown Southern Food. My grandmother would never cook Paula Deen's kind of food but cooked Mrs. Wilkes kind everyday of her life. We had fried chicken, beef stew, meatloaf, BBQ pork, mashed potatoes au gratin, rice, gravy, candied yams, black-eyed peas, turnip greens, rutabagas, corn, butter beans, potato salad, cornbread dressing, waxed green beans, cucumbers, biscuits and cornbread. For drink we had sweet tea and for dessert banana pudding or cherry cobbler. The funny thing is yesterday President Obama was in Savannah and ate at Mrs. Wilkes. Mrs. Wilkes staff only had 10 minutes warning they were coming. Well DW sat in the very same chair the President sat in.
The secret to eating at Mrs. Wilkes and not having to stand in line that long is get there early. We basically ate no breakfast and were at the restaurant by 10:30. There were about 15 people in line ahead of us and we were eating by 11:00. As you are standing in line take the time to talk to the folks around you. It turns out the couple behind us was from our same city (Raleigh, NC). They sat next to us at our table and we had a great time talking to them. Don't be shy, you will be sitting with strangers at your table and eating family style. We enjoyed talking to everyone at our table.
Well after stuffing ourselves, we paid and rolled out of Mrs. Wilkes. We decided to forgo walking any around Savannah as we've done that many times. Instead we drove over to Beaufort and walking around the historic area some. Unfortunately it is still cold here and we tired of that after a very short while. We got us a coffee and headed back to the resort.
Hopefully we'll get to take one last walk out on the beach shortly. But it sure would be nice if the sun came out.
