Tried new drive from Boston. We took I-84 to 81 to 77 to 26(in SC) then to 95 in SC. It was a great drive. no delays(like NY City(GWbridge) or Washington DC or the unexplained slow dlowns and stops on 2 lane 95 in NC, SC. It was a nice change from the 20+ drives along 95.

Arrived Sun 6/6 at 2pm from Boston area(stopped in Roanoke VA sat night); checked in and room was ready. 1216 in building attached to Live Oak Lodge 1 bdroom. Everything in perfect order, octapus towel animal greeted us in bedroom. Great view of marsh, boadwalk and sunset. Its the very last room in the building so its quiet and convenient outdoor stairway to all areas. We have stayed in Lodge many times and 4-5 times at the end of the resort(building 29, 30) and really loved them all. Hit the grocery store, then the pool for a swim (huge thunder storm with incredible winds just as I returned to the room!!)and had Guiseppis delivery for dinner-stuffed piza, greek salad and buffalo wings all very good, but took a while.

Monday am cooked breakfast in the room and ate on our porch-we hit the beach, weather was perfect high 80's low humidity sunny, but windy. Brought sandwiches and left around 1pm-DH went golfing and I hit the main pool for sun, swimming and reading. Went to Crazy Crab for dinner-no wait, great shrimp! Back to resort and hit Shelter Cove area for music, shopping and then off to Starbucks for latte!

Tuesday am breakfast in again..DH too sunburned for beach so he stayed in room and read. I hit the beach(DH dropped me off at Beach House) again, gorgeous weather, but no one was at the beach house pool-really strange. Left the beach at 1pm had lunch with DH in room and headed to Beaufort for the afternoon. Easy drive and we were thrilled to find DUNKIN DONUTS!!! Really missed the coffee as I go 2x day at home. Really nice waterfron area, lost of historic homes and great shopping. Headed home to resort-we grilled steak and are enjoying listening to music from Shelter Cove from the porch. Tonite was BBQ and pirate party here, but with DS now 20 and back in MA we skipped it. Lots of kids with pirate bandanas and ballon swords walking around! Not sure what's up for later, maybe min-golf.

Wenesday-nothing planned yet, Member's Day here

I'll keet you posted. Took lots of pictures, but I have to figure out how to load them onto my posts-keep checking back to see if I figure it out! the weather has been amazing. We leave thursday for Savannah(one night) then back to Boston.

It sounds wonderful!

We don't have stuffed pizza here in Ohio...well, I'm a transplant, so maybe someone here does have it, but I love Giordano's in Orlando...we will try Guissepe's when we go there.

Have a great time in Savannah! HHI, Savannah, and Charleston are places we want to visit more once we retire. You casually mention that you've stayed in the Lodge "many times!" Lucky you.

Sounds like a great trip. I'm jealous. My wife and I have been members for 6 years and have still not been to the Hilton Head resort yet. That will change soon. Thanks for the post.:thumbsup2

Sounds like a great trip. We'll be there checking in on 7/11 for dds 7th b-day. Any word on the oil spill and how it may affect the resort from people down there?
Any chance if you know if the pirate theme party will be going on all summer? I saw it in someone's memorial day TR and didn't know if they would be continuing that all summer. Need to plan bringing pirate garb if they do.
Enjoy the rest of your trip.

My family and I are leaving on Sat 6/26 and planning to arrive in HHI on 6/27 for check in. Since we are in CT, I am going to try the route you suggested. I was just wondering where you stayed Sat night in Roanoke. Any recommendations would be great. Do you plan on stopping in Roanoke on the way home as well? Can't wait to see pictures. We are very excited for our first trip. I think my boys 10 & 6 will love it.

The drive is a breeze compared to the 20+ 95 trips. We left Boston at 7:30 am and got to Roanoke VA (exit 146) at around 6pm. We stayed at Country Inn and Suites, nice clean breakfast included. We would have continued driving a couple of more hours had I not already made the reservations..we were still willing to go,but decided to rest, have nice dinner and start early. We left Sunday am around 7am, got to HHI around 2pm, but stopped for lunch. Your kids will love the resort, our DS did when he was their age. Make sure to go to the Pirate BBQ on Tuesday night if they are into that(also fireworks from behing the reosrt on Tuesday night and lots of activities within walk at Shelter Cove. Lots of kids activities at the resort, beach house and main pool.

HHI newspaper says that their should be no repercussion to the island from the spill. Pirate them is BBQ which used to be Patriotic theme in the pas-held on Tuesday nights. Saw lots of pirate bandanas and balloon swords around the resort yesterday, but we do not have any young ones(DS is 20 and home in boston) so we skipped it. I beleive it is the weekly bbq for the summer. Have fun! so sad we are leaving tomorrow, but will go to Savannah for the night.

Thank you for the information. My kids can't wait for all the activities, including the Pirate BBQ. Enjoy the remainder of your trip and have a safe trip home.

We are here this week for our 8th year in a row...having a wonderful time! Missed the fireworks last night, but pool party was great as always....Harry led the activities and did a fantastic job. The best weather we have ever had...tried a couple of new restaurants...one good, two not for us. Love, love this place.

same as the way down. 95 to 26 to 77 to 81 to 84 to masspike. It was great on the way home also, there is some construction, but no impact like on 95. Loved avoiding DC area and NYC and it was another breeze ride home. There is more commercial trucking on this route and you are high in mountains with steep inclines and long downward runs if that makes a difference to you as a driver. I don't think we will do this ride at xmas week trip..elevation from PA thru WV and VA could be a problem with ice, snow.....otherwise its a great alternative to the 95 drive.

Thanks! I've sent this link to him...there's a family group planning to go to HHI, DVC or Marriott, next year, and this is good to know.

A Dunkin Donuts?! Where? When we lived in MA, we had Dunkin Donuts all the time. Now the closest Dunkin Donuts is 4 hours from us, and in an airport. Just today I spent $11 at that DD, and at airport prices, that's not much. So please tell us where this DD is.

The DD is in Beaufort. We went there for a side trip and DH happended to check the Dunkin Donuts website for locations. It must be new because the owner was interviewing people and thanked us for coming in and we thanked him for being there!
