Live From 9/7 Magic

Sometimes we don't appreciate what we have and sometimes we take things for granted. Our family was very lucky booking a 7 day cruise that wound up right in between both Charley and Frances. Our cruise was a pleasure and hopefully all will work out well for future cruisers.

I think now may be a good time to find one of those Konk Coolers. Please try to relax and enjoy what you do have.

Well said Susan.... we have been saying that for a week now and my husband was rebuked and made fun of because he said people were whining. One even said they were going to be a winer. I am amazed and really distressed how people reacted on this board on this subject. It seems people wanted to know more about what compensation they would be getting instead of worrying about whether or not the ship would even make it back to ANY port.

My husband and I are saddened by all this. Selfishness and insensitivity is alive and well. Pity. We are reassured though that other people feel the same as we do.

I'm on the 9/7/04 cruise.

Thank you all for your input. I come to these boards to share information and enjoy the company of others that enjoy DCL. Not to listen to complaints. At least not in this forum. Please, if you wish to start an argument with a poster can you take it to the debate forum or something? I don't like posting this but I'm quite bothered by this sort of thing being done to someone making an innocent post. I did not see one bit of a problem with the original poster. The subject here is the 9/7 cruise and not life's tragedies, and there are many, please. Further, I've met many, many persons from Florida on this cruise. There is an appropriate place to argue on these boards I believe.

That being said - I'm cruising!
And anyone on this cruise is happy to be doing the same and so is everyone in Florida happy that they are bringing moneny to their state as well.
Well, after a 3.5 hour bus ride from WDW Port Orleans French Quarter resort to Ft. Lauderdale we made it to a very long line to check-in for the Magic at Port Everglades. It was a manual check-in where they gave us a boarding pass and our KTTW card. I'm sure there were some serious mixups as I did see a family crying and quite upset at check-in walking away. I feel for that. It took us about 45 minutes to get checked in. Only Topsiders on deck 9 was open for the bufffet.

We are not exiting Port Everglades and started out abotu 9:00p.m. The safety drill was postponed until tomorrow morning at 10:45a.m. ...... at this time anyway.

Had a strange visit by Guest Services to our room asking my name. They said the system showed no one in our room. Stranged because all our bags were delivered and so were the messages about our $200 onboard credit and returning cruisers cocktail meeting.

Finding ourselves quite disoriented preparing for one thing, but getting another. We got to the port so late via DCL transnsportation all of Palo was booked and we are on a waiting list. We totally missed making an appointment for my wife's hair braiding as we were trying to re-coupe from the bus ride and long check-in it slipped our minds. Oh well, we are cruising! lol

Met Jason and Travis in the Cove Cafe. Great fellas! Of course I talk everyone's ears off if given half the chance.

We're too arrive at Cozumel tomorrow at 7:00p.m. and leave teh following evening.

Everyone take care!

I am glad you made it on the ship-better late than never.
We are scheduled to leave on our first cruise 9/25. My twin 9 yr olds, DH and myself are so excited. The hurricanes of course have now made us very nervous. I too have family in Fla, the Carolinas and Georgia. I don't think it is wrong for any current or near future cruiser to "vent" their frustrations. This is, after all, a disney cruise line forum. It is sad that those who have come to these boards to post are shot down with ridicule and being called selfish. While my focus is on my nearing cruise, my thoughts have not left those effected everywhere by the hurricanes-my family included. But just because i don't post those thought each time doesn't mean others should assume that those thoughts aren't there! Let's try to be a kinder, gentler forum!

Oh well, I have been fighting jumping into this one, but I just can’t seem to resist a good firefight.

First to Carl RN, believe me I can sympathize with your frustration, tension and over all unhappiness with the situation. Yes there are many worse things than a shortened cruise, and I don’t think that was her point. But those of us removed from the situation a bit don’t know first hand what it has been like for these folks for the last week. Trying to get good up to date information, constantly changing flight arrangement etc. etc. etc.. Of course it would get to you. You’re really hoping for the best possible out come for the folks in the path of the storm, but you’re also trying to salvage your expensive, long anticipated vacation. And I am certain that there has been tons of confusion and poor information given out from DCL, the airlines, whomever.

That being said, I am holding fast to my staunch position of Disney supporter. Put yourself in the place of the day-to-day cast member, many of who live in Florida and were having to battle a hurricane along with thousands of passengers. With the constantly changing circumstances I am sure they were receiving all kinds of conflicting information and even acting on rumors or educated guesses. Let’s all think about how things go at our jobs, are we always able to provide our “customers” with the latest most accurate information? Do our channels of communication get garbled from time to time? Do we get testy with folks when we’ve been under the hammer for hours on end? Speaking for me, someone who works in customer service everyday, the answer is yes. So maybe we need to judge the cast members and their efforts in a little softer light.

Could the higher ups maybe have done things better, of course, who doesn’t have room for improvement? However, Disney is one of the few companies left that truly tries to deliver a complete and exceptional experience, but they are still a company and business run by people. We have to make sure our expectations are a little bit more realistic about just what Disney can do.

And the logistics of the cruise industry are mind-boggling. I’m not surprised that things were a mess at Port Everglades. Like one poster said, they may have only had those few cast members available, some may be picking pieces of their houses up around their neighborhoods. Plus DCL’s entire system is not located at that port. Their computer network, baggage handling, supplies, regular staff and on and on. What a nightmare for them as well.

This entire situation requires a great deal of patience and grace on all sides. I can guarantee you that if Disney had it’s choice no of this would have happened. But they didn’t. They don’t want to be aggravating customers or staff. But hurricanes by nature are wildly unpredictable so you can’t plan for every contingency or know what subsequent problems will occur.

I guess my point is, lets all chill a bit on all sides. Folks like Carol RN should be able to vent some of their frustration with a crazy situation. But everyone should keep a better-balanced perspective on the results of a storm no one could control. For the most part it sounds like Disney did the best they could with a crappy set of volatile circumstances. So please when you list your litany of “screw ups” try being as objective as possible.

We (God willing) sail in a couple of weeks. So this may become a lot more subjective to us should we see more hurricanes after Ivan. Selfishly I hope not at least until we’re on the Magic.

To those on her now, enjoy and keep us posted.

It really is sad. And those of us that defend DCL are being flamed. That's really sad. I used to think this was such a friendly board but now I am not so sure. I have been shocked at some of the things I have read here over the past few days. When you choose to cruise during hurricane season you need to be prepared for a hurricane to change your plans. You have to be willing to be flexible. Otherwise choose another time of the year to cruise when it isn't hurricane season.

goingtodisneyagain,

I really got flamed on the thread Magic Update. I was told to butt out. I didn't realize how vicious people can be.

It really was a friendly board at one time. It has become interesting to say the least. I know many CM's and I am amazed at what they tell us about how they are treated. Such as, people not showing up the last night of the cruise so they don't have to tip, etc. Also, DCL is so afraid of being sued over the least little thing. If you are ever told that your waiter or assistant waiter " hurt his back" that means he was fired because of some complaint a guest made. They would rather dismiss the CM than to have to worry about a guest trying to get money out of them. Sad world we live in....

On that note, I am looking forward to my next cruise. Will I tell anyone when that next one will be? I'm not sure.

I saw the comments on the other thread. I just posted on it in your defense. It's really getting way out of hand. I don't think it really mattered what Disney did, I think people were going to complain regardless. People need to learn to make the best of a bad situation.

I do think people have the right to be frustrated, just remember where the blame is. Not DCL. Also remember, if your biggest complaint is the "hassle" of going to a different port, why dont you stop at the nearest moble home park that got hit, and tell them how mad you are that it took a little longer to get to your ship. If you dont like the way it is going go home. If I ran DCL I would have cancelled this cruise until the crew, port, airlines, resorts, islands, ect... had time to regroup. consider yourself lucky if you are on this cruise.

To 9-07-04 cruisers:

I wanted to wish you a "magical" vacation! Every one of you had to experience more difficulties to get to where you are right now than what is the norm! On my one and only Disney Cruise, embarking was so simple. I see that I shouldn't take anything for granted! Look what you guys had to go through!

Have a wonderful time, relax, and enjoy! YOU deserve it!!!

If you are able to go to Palos, eat an extra chocolate souffle' for me please!:teeth:

As a former WDW CM and a fan of the Hospitality Industy (Majoring in it) Ive followed these past weeks with facination and Ive learned alot as a sideline sitter- Now Im not trying to vacation to WDW/DCL so Im an outside but I see both sides

It would get frustrating especially if you are a detail planner- to not have anything concrete to know basically heading on a vactation you saved for years for that you have no idea where/when/ and frankly HOW it was going to happen

But all in all I give a complete hats off to DCL. For being thrown for such a huge loop they've appeared to "make the most" from the 7-10 day cruisers who most prob just wanted to get off the boat to having the logistical nightmare of using a new port at the drop of a hat and trying to shuffle upwards of 5000 (old and new cruisers) through in a semblence of order from basically half the state and back with little staffing trying to logisitcally do it. Amazing...

I know one thing Disney has earned my Cruise business from now on. Knowing how hard they go out of their way to try to make the best of a horrible situation- makes it worth it to me :)

I have to agree....Disney has done a wonderful job in such a difficult situation! I am thankful that there is such a wonderful company out there if I am ever in the same situation!

Goodness are we all a passionate group or what?!? We need to all lighten up here.

I can only imagine how disappointing it can be to have a vacation that you've look forward to for maybe a year or more, be spoiled by something out of everyone's control. That's the hard part...hard to find someone to be mad at. And I'm sure it's hard to not be selfish or compassionate, after all it's your long awaited vacation. But I'm also sure this is a logicstical nightmare for DCL. They didn't plan on going to another port and I'm sure they're doing the best they can to make it all work and keep everyone happy. They're working within the confines of a state that has been just devastated by these two hurricanes, and now perhaps a third. Economically this is going to kill FL. There are people who are homeless, or without power, or without water or without gasoline to drive their cars. I have a friend who lives in Jupiter who cut down 5 trees before the hurricane hit and one still crashed into her house. So she's without power and now can't run a generator due to the fact the electrical is messed up because of the tree in her roof. Additionally she's a sales rep with a major computer company who works out of her house...life is going to be interesting for her, won't it? Not only has her home been affected but how she earns money will also be affected. She was supposed to be on a business trip with my husband this week...she can't leave her house, nor can she get out of the state right now, the airports are a mess. At the same time, she can't work because she has no phone or power....

The bottom line is, I'm actually surprised that DCL is even sailing right now, but they are a for profit company and therefore need to make an attempt at earning some revenue, so they're doing the best with what they have. And to be honest, if I were scheduled to go on a cruise this week, I don't think I'd want to go. How much fun could it be to be a tourist in a devasted state? How depressing would that be? I think I'd just postpone if I could or just cancel all together. I know, that sucks...but at least I would have a home with a roof intact.

Ok, flame me...but keep in mind, I'm sharing my honest opinions and I only hope compassion floats my way when California has "the big one" (earthquake). I really feel for the Floridians....

OK - I haven't read everything in this post but I wanted to make a comment. We are just getting the rains from what is left of hurricane Francis.

I was not scheduled on this cruise but if I was I would certainly have kept an eye on what was going on regarding the port.

Being a Dis fanatic I kept an eye on the track and conditions at the port and the location of the Magic and I knew that it was being diverted to Port Everglades. How can anyone who was scheduled to be on this cruise not have kept up to date with what was happening - INCLUDING calling DCL to find out the latest.

I'm sure things were chaotic with the transfers because of the change and it had to be arranged very quickly. My advise to everyone sailing in the next 2-3 weeks is keep on top of changes.

Thank you paulmc80 for taking the time from you vacation to post an undate for us. It is always nice to hear what is happening onboard.

I hope you and all of the cruisers on this sailing have a wonderful time. I am sure today will be much more relaxing.

Thanks again for thinking of us here on the Dis Boards and letting us know what is going on.

Enjoy your time onboard!

Having read this thread I have to agree that when someone expresses their dissatisfaction with DCL others all jump on them and say be thankful you're not homeless or your home has been destroyed, or other disasters of the world haven't been inflicted upon you is just out and out lame.
By this mindset no one should complain, express a negative opinion or anything else except for the world is a wonderful place and I should be thankful for everything and not complain about a thing.
Do some people go overboard with their complaints? imho sure, but then again I'm not in their shoes so dont know how they deal with certain things.
I personally think in many areas DCL have dealt well with the problems. In other areas no they haven't. It isn't some type of conspiracy though. People screw up!! Fact of life and DCL has in some areas I'm sure. People should have the right to express their personal discontent without being told that others are worse off. You give me a scenario and I'm sure someone can top it with their tale of woe, even if they have to make one up ;)
I don't know how I'd deal with this as I'm not there but I'll see next year when we return via the Panama Canal to Florida at the end of August start of September.

Cheers,
Grumbo

Just thought I'd share something that made me smile: I was watching the weather channel, showing all the damage and whatnot and for their commercial break what was the commercial? You guessed it Disney Cruise Line! Just seeing it made me smile a little. when they came back on they the mentioned how Disney World re-opened but their two ships still aren't home and then showed a picture of the Magic and Wonder at Port Everglades.
BTW anyone know how much damage to PC? how is the DCL terminal?
ALLEARS: keeping my fingers crossed for our 9/25 sailiing!

Honestly, I am SO SICK of hearing this everytime someone says that DCL isn't handling something well. You know what? There are worse things than a hurricane. Sending your child to school and having it overtaken by terrorists who then killed your child would be a lot worse than having lost the roof of your home. Walking down the street and being shot in the head simply because some teen wanted to see what it felt like to kill. Living in a refugee camp in Ruwanda and being killed when another tribe decided you needed to die.... Really, the list goes on and on. Going by this reasoning NO ONE SHOULD EVER COMPLAIN. Of course that's ridiculous, and so is the "at least you didn't" argument.

Erin :D

You know what, I take offense at this and I usually find your posts so supportive. Yes there are worse things that hurricanes, but to capitalize that you're SICK of hearing it is offensive. We don't live in a country that has those other horrific events happening at the moment, however there are those here in Florida who have lost loved ones, there are deaths attributed to these storms, lives lost. There have been over 40 deaths directly attributed to these hurricanes, does that not count? The amount of stress that is going on down here is unbelievable and it's making people physically ill. There have been quite a few heart attacks in our town due to this and I'm sure other places. There are people who have lost EVERYTHING that they own and they don't have the money or insurance to replace it. They are going without a roof over their heads and no food in their stomach, no running water and the basic necessaties of lie that we all take for granted. There is more than people losing a roof, they have lost every single thing that they ever owned in their lives and they won't be getting it back. There are people who don't have a dime to rebuild, buy new clothes, or feed their kids now. While having someone storm your schools is something that I can't imagine, show some compassion to a state that currently has it's resources stretched beyond belief.
You've got to understand, while it's horrible and very upsetting to have your vacation plans altered, cancelled or changed, it's more upsetting to live like this. I'm sure there are plenty of people who live in Florida who are sick of hearing everyone whine about their missed cruises and or ports as that stuff just doesn't seem that important to us. My travel plans have been greatly altered, but honestly, I have more important things to think of once again, like loading up on hurricane supplies and praying that we don't get hit again.

What everyone seems to foget is, those people who work for DCL live in the state of Florida. Not only are they trying very hard to make everyone happy, they're also dealing with damaged homes, stress and everything else that goes along with the situation going on down here. I praise them for working so hard and trying everything in their power to make people happy. I honestly feel that Disney and others have gone above and beyond to make those who are booked with them happy. I praise everyone down here who has to keep on working while dealing with their own personal resources being drained and out of whack. Disney needs to be cut some slack just like everyone else down here, we've all had enough. We're not going to get it as we now have another major hurricane heading right out way.
