Did anyone watch or go to the Live8 Concert on Saturday? I watched it on TV and boy was it a great concert I loved the closing where the Bare Naked Ladies started singing the National anthem that kinda got me a bit. Had a lump in my throat after that especially after seeing everything they did at the show and all the shows around the world. I signed on and bought 10 wrist bands from the web site.

When Will Smith came on in Philly, and he said that a child dies in Africa every 3 seconds and all the other actors, singers were clicking there fingers every 3 seconds I started to cry. Very sad, very emotional!
I didn't catch it all, but I hope it makes a difference.

I kind of boycotted the whole Live 8 thing. I think it's really great that a bunch of celebrities want to tell world leaders to cancel third world countries debts and increase foreign aid, but I really think Geldoff should stage a coup of some sort in Zimbabwe or Sudan. I think he needs to overthrow the current government, jail their leaders and make himself president. Then the money that goes to these countries will end up in good hands, get dispersed fairly, not into the hands of corrupt militants who deny that HIV is the virus that causes AIDS and import BMV's for themsleves, machine guns and precious stones while the people they "govern" barely make it by on rice and die of leprosy, malaria and AIDS.

Just my 2 cents - coming from a NGO volunteer, not an uninformed rambler.

My daughter went and said that it was very, very emotional. It is something she will remember for the rest of her life.

Tone I agree that it is hard to get the money to the places it needs to be over there because of the coruption but don't say that to loud or the US will go in and start blowing stuff up LOl sorry just had to add that after a lengthy heated debate with an american friend of mine from PA.

Of course. That's exactly what will happen. :sad2:

Maybe I misunderstood, but I think it is more about decreasing the debt and interest that these countries owe as opposed to simply sending more money. Not to say they just wouldn't spend it on something less constructive but it's better to teach a man to fish instead of having him pay for decades for fish that he ate months ago.

Or not.

"Interviewed on NBC’s Meet the Press via video link from Dublin, Ireland, Bono had high praise for President Bush: "I think he's done an incredible job, his administration, on AIDS. And 250,000 Africans are on anti-viral drugs. They literally owe their lives to America. In one year that's been done.

Having worked on Bush's AIDS initiative and the Millenium Challenge Account, the rock star thinks Bush "deserves his place in history. He has the heart for it," he added, "but his advisers are going … to have to let him sign … a proper check."

Bono said he loves and believes in America and it upsets him when others say America is not doing enough. "The president is right to say they're doing a quarter of all aid to Africa. He has doubled, even tripled -- if he follows through -- aid to Africa."

Bold face is mine. Here's the link:

"Speaking of another threat to Africa, that of the corruption of some leaders, Bono said: "This is the number one issue, and there's no way around it. That's what's so clever about President Bush's Millennium Challenge. It was start-up money for new democracies. It was giving increases of aid flows only to countries that are tackling corruption."

Again, bold face is mine. But please, feel free to bash away.

Great DisFan2. Maybe Bono should be president. Bono should stage a coup in Congo! Wouldn't the world be a better place then?

BTW, what does Bono have to do with Angola, oil and Osama?

Very nice how you inject yourself into other people's quotes.

Yes - kind of. 2 weeks ago, 18 countries in Africa had their debts cancelled by the G7 finance ministers, but that was only 18 - Live 8 wanted to bring awareness just before the G8 summit in Scotland to the world leaders that more must be done and that all debts should be cancelled.

Also, Live 8 wants the leaders of the G8 to commit to the 0.7% of the national income to foreign aid that was promised with a targetted timeline. Lester B. Pearson, bless his soul, in 1975 wanted Canada to committ to 0.9% by this time. Canada currently pledges around 0.3%. Realistically for Canada to acheive this goal, without taking away money from current services, we will go back in debt.

I do agree with the concept of teaching a man to fish - check out the Stephen Lewis Foundation and some of the things they do and help contribute to and you will see exactly what you are saying.

Thanks tone.def. You cleared a few things up for me. You must be very passionate about the cause to become so familiar with everything that is currently going on. I hope, as much as the next guy that things get straightended out in Africa but I agree that for us to meet previous goals it could very well put us further in debt and I'm not sure that's a viable solution. Here's hoping for the best.

Speaking of Live 8, I didn't realize Celine Dion was so despised in this country. The least we could have done was applaud her for dedicating some time for this very important cause.

Actually Disfan that was a comment from my friend in PA who by the way is in the military well just got out actually and can't wait to move to Canada. He is also my sisters fiance.

He's about as relevant as the Bush reference is in your post. You speculate on what Bush would do in Africa - I've pointed out what he has done. Sorry you don't like my use of "bold", but the use of emphasis could hardly be considered "injecting" myself into their quotes. Why Bono? I figured you'd find him more credible than a US State Dept. official - I'll use them next time.

That's good to know, thanks. So I guess in the "lengthy, heated debate" you were on my side of the argument.

I cracked a simple joke :rotfl2: . You go hard-core Bush :cheer2: . I find Bono as credible as Bob Geldoff as you should have been able to see from my first post in this thread - obviously you did not read it :rolleyes1

For future reference - here is your journalism tip of the day: When quoting someone, you must leave their words as is. Interrupting them to put things in your own words or adding your own words takes away from the original quote in question and detracts it's meaning without intent :love2: .

Also doll - "their" is a possesive and "they're" as in 'they are' is what you wanted to start your post off with. It's hard to find credibility with someone who neglects to use the proper English form. Sounds like more passion than logictics in your postings!

No actually but he does still support Bush just not his war in Iraq so I played devils advoicate and it got very heated I still agree that Bush shouldn't have gone into Iraq. Se even people with teh same views can debate opposite sides of the coin.

It is strange how my grammar goes to crap when writing on message boards - I frequently go back and edit (in fact, I was editing the error when you were quoting my post and responding). I find it difficult to find condescending people credible, but that's another story. I'm crushed that I've lost your respect - I guess I managed to fool all of my professors in University.

With respect to the journalism tip - as long as I attribute the emphasis properly, there's (!) nothing wrong with using it. I didn't add any of my own words.

I did read your first post with interest - and was glad to see we were on the same side of the fence. Why Bono? Considering that he's pretty much a darling of the left, I figured he'd be considered more objective/trustworthy than, as I mentioned before, a State Dept. official.... sweetheart! :love2:

"Hardcore Bush"? Not even close. You should see the bumper stickers - now those are hardcore!
