Hello,

Thanks to some encouragement from this board, we are planning a Disney trip for this summer. We have a 5yo and a 1yo, so my question is this:

Would you take kids of those ages to Disney in July or August or will it just be too hot?

Those are really the only two months we can book a trip in, but I am hesitant because of the weather.

What do you Disney experts think?

Thanks so much!

If you have the ability to stay on resort taking the 1 year old is possible by taking a fair amount of breaks. Last August we went with 5 and 8 yr. olds and the heat was not a major factor.

It is very hot and humid, but mostly everywhere you go is airconditioned! The resorts, the rides, the buses, etc. If this is the only time you can go I wouldn't worry too bad. Just bring lots of sunscreen, hats, ponchos, those little fans that must you with water and swim wear! Have fun:)

We went in August 2007 for 2 weeks with a 3.5 year old and tweens and teens. What we found worked best for us was to get the parks for opening and stay until around none-1 pm. We then broke for lunch/swim/rest/nap until about 4 pm and went back at night (it was a bit cooler). We found this worked best for all the kids. While we were in the parks if it seemed like we were getting overheated we browsed around an airconditioned gift shop for a bit.

We've been in Aug. with little ones....yes, it's very hot and humid, but take it from me (I lived in FL for 23+ years)...it's always hot and humid in FL!!! (just a matter of severity) It's all about smart touring, taking breaks in the heat of the afternoon, using the indoor attractions to cool off, etc. AND it's all about taking the right equipment...cool clothing, sunscreen, hats, fans/ misting fans, adequate shades on the stroller (I use the RayShade as I don't think most stroller shades provide enough shade in the FL heat/sun), etc. Darcy gave great advice as well about afternoon breaks, etc.

You'll be fine if you tour & pack wisely!

ETA - both July and Aug. are hot....but Aug. should be a little less crowded. I'd go with Aug. give the choice of the 2.

Ditto on this! I've done July with kids 2 times. Once when DS was 17 mos and DD was 4. You must get out of the parks by 1 pm for a nap/swim. Both times we stayed at the Contemporary Resort and that is the ONLY way to go with little ones -well perhaps the Poly or GF, but you must be on the monorail or my advice is to wait until they are older or go at a cooler time of the year.

It is absolutely survivable and enjoyable. As many have said, make sure you have comfortable clothes, sunscreen, hats, water, etc. I had a great clip on fan for the stroller that I got at http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=1372 . We've taken it on 2 trips and will take it this June, even though the kids are 5 and 7.

All of the parks have great little buildings for familys that are air conditioning and have rooms for naps, changes, etc.

When were there in July 07 we bought a Mickey fan for our P-nut's ride (stroller) and we would notice a considerable difference in temp under the canopy. She usually doesn't fall asleep in the stroller as she doesn't like to miss anything, but with the fan she'd fall asleep very easily, with out she was a bear.

Now here's the reason for the screw driver and batteries. The fan WILL go through a set of batteries easily in 1 day. Unless you want to buy a new fan each day you'll need to find a screw driver to replace those batteries. and on top of that it may be cheaper to bring your own batteries, or like we did in 2008, brought rechargeables and kept swapping those out. One thing I did notice though is that the rechargeables would drain faster than some/most one-time use batteries.

Have a great trip and HTH

Ooooh, good one Jason! I forgot to mention that! We brought the screw driver and extra batteries! If I'm not mistaken one of the tiny eyeglass repair kit screw drivers worked and was nice to have for the sun glasses too!

i bought 2 of the mickey fans last summer, and if you can find another brand of clip on....i suggest it. The mickey fans DO go through batteries very quickly...the screw on battery cover is particularly annoying...the battery cover can get warm from constant use, the hands that clip on don't open very wide, making it difficult to find a good place to clip on the stroller and the fans aren't that strong (don't move a lot of air)

Also, the spray bottle fans are my favorite. Walmart, Walgreens, Dollar Store...many places sell them if you can get them before going to Disney. Otherwise, the Disney ones are good :)

If that's when you can go then I would go! We went last year w/ 3.5 year old and 1 year old Aug 10-16th. And we're headed back this year, they will be 4.5 and 2 from July 20-30th! It was hot, but doable. Just take things a little bit slower and you'll be fine!
