My daughter and I saw this movie yesterday and LOVED it! I had read a lot of reviews beforehand and knew that it was getting mostly good reviews, but a lot of the time, that doesn't mean much.

It's being billed as a laugh-out loud, hilarious movie. Well, it is, but it's also extremely poignant and touching. We laughed AND we cried!

Unlike the movie Family Stone, which was billed as a comedy but had an extremely sad ending, Little Miss Sunshine had some disquieting moments but a very funny, upbeat ending.

The family in the movie is certainly dysfunctional, but we were routing for them all the way! The actress who plays the little girl, Olive, is terrific!

I have heard this is a good movie and I want to see it. I have a 15 y/o daughter. What do you think about the "R" rating and taking a teen? We aren't regular "R" rating viewers but she has seen one or two of them.

My sister and niece saw this last week and have NOT stopped talking about it! They just keep saying "GO SEE IT!!" It's amazing to me because my niece usually hates comedies but loved this one! :thumbsup2

My daughter just turned 16, but she's seen quite a few R rated movies. That sounds awful, but really, there are worse things in life than a teen seeing an R rated movie, IMO anyway. That's not to say that we allow her to view any movie she wants. There are certainly some R rated films that would not be appropriate for her age.

Anyway, back to your question. :) I'm guessing the movie earned it's R rating for the use of profanity. The free-thinking grandfather uses the "f-word" quite frequently. He also uses drugs. Like I said, it's a dysfunctional family. :rotfl2: However, there is NO sex, nudity, or blood and gore.

I would rather my daughter see a heartfelt movie with profanity than a movie filled with violence and/or sex, but that's just my opinion.

Not disagreeing about teens and R rated movies. I don't "get out much" so I don't know how bad R rated movies are these days. Also, my DD (15) prefers to see movies with her friends rather than her old Mom, so it sort of is self-limiting when it comes to the R rated movies as they cannot get in. It is certainly not a moral decision on my part. I don't mind her seeing nudity, sexual innuendo, profanity. What I am concerned about is, I have probably seen one or two R rated where they were doing some real "bumping and grinding" if ya know what I mean and I rather not have her see that part of it, although, I'm sure she's aware of it. :teeth:

Sounds like the title of an old Shirley Temple movie! :rotfl:

I thought you were calling out to me, telling me my PM box was full! ;) :rotfl2:

I haven't seen or heard of the movie, but a comedy on a rainy weekend sounds good. Is it an ok date movie?

I know exactly what you mean! I've seen plenty of R rated movies with scenes that have made ME uncomfortable! :rotfl2:

There is absolutely nothing like that in Little Miss Sunshine. :)

I'm not sure if I'd recommend it to people on a first date, or people who don't really know each other that well. For couples aged 18 and up, who pretty much know what might offend one another, I'd say, yes. Also, keep in mind, it is a comedy, but it also touches on some heavier issues.

I think we've known each other for awhile--we've been married for 24 years. :rotfl2: Sorry I wasn't more specific! :teeth: I meant for us old fogies! :rotfl:

But I hate crying in movies!

:lmao: Sorry, I know you have an older daughter and I figured that's who you were thinking of!

I hate crying at the movies, too, and I try to keep myself from doing so. However, this was a matinee and there were only about fifteen people in the theatre, and everyone else was well over the age of sixty. I figured they'd understand. And yes, my daughter and I both cried! :rotfl2:

I know that you're a softly like me, so if you cried, I will, too.

And there wasn't a male in the theatre, just a few groups of 60+ women and a few elderly women by themselves.

So, now I know where all the older women spend their afternoons. They aren't at home baking chocolate chip cookies. Nah, they're with their friends munching on popcorn at the R rated matinee flicks. :lmao:
