Little Misfortune at SSR

Thought I would let all of you know, I helped an elderly couple this past week when my family was on vacation. The couple had went out on to the balcony and was accidentally locked out. The door accidentally (somehow) locked behind them. I went out to have coffee and enjoy the view when I heard them call out to me. They ended up stranded on the balcony for 1 and a half hour after I called. When I called the 2nd time, concierge stated that the couple had used both locks on the door and an engineer-er was responding.

Hope this hasn't happened or doesn't happen to anyone else.

I didn't think it was even possible to lock yourself on the balcony (I'm thinking that it's really not). Perhaps they just couldn't figure out the door or something - I don't know. But yeah, once you've used your deadbolt and latch on the room door, I could see that it would be very difficult for someone to get in.

The gentleman was strong enough to tear off the handle from the outside. I mean, the guy was in good shape for his age. I don't know that there is much to figure out from the outside. There is only glass doors and a handle, no way to lock or unlock the door from the outside.

I called front desk once to report that a housekeeper was locked out on a balcony at the BCV. She definitely needed help to get back in the villa!

Yes you can get locked out. It happened to me at SSR on a ground floor room. The bar that lifts up when you unlock the slide door can fall just a bit when you close the door behind you.

I guess if you really close the door completely it could happen, we have never had that problem, as I rarely close it all the way.

I feel sorry for the elderly couple, but goes to show the reason you use the deadbolt/security latch while in the room. The deadbolt can be over rode with a manager/security key....the latch is a different story and they basically have to use a wire to unlatch it from the outside, which is quite tricky because the door has to be almost completely closed. If there is enough give it can be done from the side or if it is tight, they have to work from the bottom gap of the door....not easy!

I am sure that if there was any danger (heat/medical) to couple they would have had the fire department respond to either rescue with a ladder or breach the door.
