Little dude growing out his bangs

My DS9 has decided he wants long hair. He has this gorgeous white-blonde hair and I have to say I enjoy seeing lots of it. But...he is specifically going for the Sawyer look (guy from Lost - has just long hair all over, no bangs.) Meantime, DS has basically hair in his eyes. It is driving us nuts, you can almost not see his eyes at all - he looks like that shaggy dog!

This is a huge deal to him and he will not agree to a haircut. I wouldn't mind him growing his hair longer, but this in-between thing with his bangs is driving me nuts. WWYD??? Do you think a hairdresser could help with this transition stage?

I put a scrunchie in it last night - it's that long. I said "see, don't you want this out of your face?"

Oh, and BTW, I'll tell ya right now -- don't give me the "you're the parent, make him get a haircut" schpiel. I know it and we're getting to that point. This is one of those battles I'm deciding whether or not I should fight!

I don't have any children, so keep that in mind when reading my response:
FWIW, I would not turn this into a battle...it's probally just a stage that he will eventually get through. Comments from friends/girls may influence him to get a cut....

Good luck with whatever you decide :)

My daughter is going through the same stage. She has really long hair, but has always had bangs. Now that she's in high school the bangs had to go, so my pretty daughter looks horrible all the time. None of my suggestions seem to be acceptable. I'm beginning to think she likes having her hair hanging in her face all the time. I sedom see her eyes. And I make her put on a headband at meals because I can't stand seeing all that hair sweeping around over her plate.

She did try parting her hair on the side the other day and pulling her hair back with a barrette. Someone liked it. :cheer2: So she's been doing that a lot lately and it's better. I've been careful not to say much (except that her hair looked nice) for fear she'd decide if I like it it must be ugly. I keep telling myself, in a few more months it'll stay tucked behind her ears if I can just last that long.

what about a "sweat band" to wear around his head? or a bandanna? just to keep the 'bangs' back while they are growing out.

of course - that might not work in school when they aren't allowed headgear, right?

if you want to go the "product" route...go to Sally's beauty supply and get some "hair cement" by "Beyond the Zone". ($7) My DH grew out his hair this summer (long story) and he used this stuff to keep the hair out of his eyes...it really did hold his hair all day! this stuff is strong!

So....it would be wrong to sneak into his room and cut it while he's sleeping?

:teeth:

Thanks for the great suggestions, guys. The product thing is great & I think he'd go for that.

DD grew her bangs out recently, and I thought it would drive me crazy.. but I decided that it wasn't a battle that I wanted to pick. Go and buy him some product to keep it back a little and don't harp on his hair.

Hair is just not a battle that I am going to fight very hard. Short of dying her hair black or shaving her head, I don't care very much what dd does with her hair.

Ugggh....I am going through this with my 8 year old...he wants his har to look like Aaron Carter's. My son usually has a crew cut, and is trying to grow it out to look like that. this is one of those battles...that I am choosing not to fight......after all it isn't like he is trying to look like Bo bice (nothing wrong with him, just the first guy I could think of with long hair) so, I guess I will have an Aaron Carter looking son for a little bit.....but growing it from the choppy short hair to this longer (but still short that it makes me feel ok) is annoying!!!! His hair just "pops" up in places where it shouldn't....but luckily for me, my son think sit is cool touse hair products....so I am practically shelacking (I have no idea how to spell that????) his head to get his hair down!!!!!!!

So.....bangs still are "out" right now? for some reason, I thought that they were coming back in style.....it is tough keeping up with these trends!!!!

Tell him to keep an eye out for how other boys are growing their bangs out. There are probably many of them if the look is changing. Of course if he is only going to answer "everybody wears it in their eyes" then I guess that won't help much!

Going to a stylist could help too. They could show him the coolest way to wear his hair while it grows out.

We girls have gone through this for years! I guess the boys are getting their turn at it! :rotfl2:

Good luck to him!

at least with girls you can wear pins/clips/headbands to hold the bangs back while they're growing out

I don't know if bangs are out necessarily, but I noticed that with boys, long hair is in. And not just long hair...like pretty long hair, but long all-over messed up hair. Like, sticking in the ears, hanging in the eyes hair.

Older DS (13) is growing his also, but will keep it trimmed out of his eyeballs at least.

I don't think this is a battle to fight either, but I am conscious that my kids appearance, especially at this age, can be reflective of me. Like, are people thinking, "geez, why doesn't she cut his hair?" Probably!

Ooopppssss.....sorry, when I posted about bangs being "out", I was meanign for girls....I thought I heard that bangs were coming back again for girls. :confused3

As for boys, yes, I know that this long look is what is "in".....hope it passes quickly!

I am like you....I feel like it reflects on me, also!!!!! but not a battle that I am choosing to fight at this point (however, if he wants it really long....than he and I will be battling....LOL!!!!!)

LOL....You could try brushing it back with some gel or even hairspray when it's wet and then it will fall a little as it dries or a nice backwards baseball cap, the fitted kind without the strap? Good luck, I know someone who is letting her 5 yr old do this, so it could be worse.

I've thought about doing the same thing to my 12yo who is letting his hair grow. This is the same child who wanted it cut short every 6 weeks before this latest stage. He looked so much better with shorter hair, but what do I know? :teeth: He is getting it trimmed soon, though, because he's going to a Bar Mitzvah next month.

Good luck with that inbetween stage!

PLEASE don't tell my daughter that bangs are coming back! :rolleyes1 I never, ever, ever want to go through this again.

She doesn't like headbands or product that makes her hair stiff or "crunchy". She has soft, fly-away, stick-straight hair, and it has a mind of it's own.

My Ds had to grow his out for a school play. Once the play was over he decided to keep it long. I asled him get it shaped up and thinned out because it was past his shoulders and he hadn't had it cut since before school started. He wasn't happy, but I promised him he could keep the length, it just needed a shape to it. I have to say, its still really really long and thick, but it looks much neater. I went in the day before and talked to the gal and told her what it looked like and what was her suggestion. She was great and he was happy because he kept the length.

I have to agree, the bangs are the worst. His are now past his ears, but when it got it shaped, she took some of the bulk out and they lay much nicer.

See if he would agree to getting it thinned out and shaped.

My DD8 is doing this too. I keep asking her "Doesn't it drive you nuts?!" but she says it doesn't. Once in a while I use an elastic to make a "Pebbles" hairdo but it doesn't last. It's almost to her ears, so it should be over soon!

I had the SAME arguement with DH!
I told him "fine - grow it long...whatever..just have it SHAPED!" heheh

then I started calling him Ponch (he looked like Eric Estrada!)

then he dyed it blonde...

:confused3

(he's back to an all over buzz cut which I love!)

I'm not sure if they are out of style. I have bangs. Sometimes I want them to be gone, but most of the time I like that they are there bacause I have a huge forehead :rotfl: . Anyway, long hair is in style for guys. They're like, growing their hair to their shoulders. Sometimes to be funny, they put their hair in ponytails. It's odd.

My bangs aren't traditional on-your-forehead though. they are long and pretty mcuh blend in with my hair since it is down most of the time anyways. They are past my chin...way past my chin. But my hair is long, thick, and curly. :confused3
