Can someone explain to me how duty on items over the limit works. Can you bring home more liquor than allowed and pay duty. If so, is it worth it? How much per bottle? Hubby is promising everyone he knows a bottle and I'm trying to give him a $ answer.

Thanks.

Yes, it's still worth it.

You have to pay something like 10% on the purchase price on every bottle over your limit. And they'll usually waive the collection of duty unless the total of duty is over $10. The prices are low enough to make this still worthwhile. How does a $24 bottle of Tanqueray gin for $7 sound?

Try a bottle of Chambord for $12 from Up Beat!

That stuff usually runs $30 at home! Plus it's yummy in just about anything! Especially in Extreme Mimosas!

Malibu Rum; large bottle $8

Regular price? $20-ish

We bought 2 of these; 2 of Captain Morgan's rum.

Thinking we should have bought more....

Malibu Rum... Is that the one with the coconut flavor?

They make Red Lavas with that at Disney-MGM. Yummy too! :teeth:

Stoli Razz for $5, Coconut Cruzan rum $5...I think it is worth it!

I forgot! Do you know any scotch drinkers? My father loves the islands becasue there are some that are not available stateside that you can get in St Martin. I think it is Green Label, there is also a black label and a red label. Forget which one is the best, I can ask my dad....

Also, the ship a liquor deal special every day to where you buy 1 bottle at the regular price and the 2nd one is like $2-$3 cheaper than the first.....I like Crown Royal and on Friday you buy the 1st for $14 and the 2nd for $12 a liter....that's cheaper than buying 1 liter here in the US at $29.99 + tax per liter.....Andy

If you could please ask your dad. My FIL loves scotch,I remember thinking last time we should get him some but I did not know which type of the johnny walker was the best so we got him the Glenlivid or something like that. When I got home he went on and on about one of the johnny walkers you can't get here and I should have gotten that. I would like to get him it this time but don't want to ask him which one it is incase I can't get it and he gets all worked up again.

I just broke open another of my Crown Royal bottles from our June cruise just last night, boy was it a great deal. I'm going to have to stock up again in January.

Let's not forget about the Guavaberry Liquor! It makes the best Guavaberry Coladas! And, it's only $12.95 for a liter. Not bad!

We bought one bottle of the stuff last May. It only lasted until August! Now I'm all out until May 04! :(

I wish I would've gotten more than what I did on our August cruise, I'll make sure I load up next year to make sure I have enough to last until the next cruise.....I have no bottles left and now feel like I'm in a dry household until I can get up enough nerve to go the liquor store and buy some at US prices...ouch, that hurts to think $30 a bottle.....Andy

Okay Jason & Travis (and anyone else):

If you could bring back four bottles, which four bottles would you recommend I bring?

(We love coladas, margueritas, and other "froo-Froo" drinks)

Thanks

Jim

Good question Jim!

I would definitely bring back at least one bottle of the original Guavaberry. If you like coladas you won't go wrong with it. It's got a very unique berry flavor.

I think they also sell other flavors too. I haven't tried them but hope to next eastern cruise.

I tend to like the foo foo drinks too and shy away from the stronger drinks. That's more of Travis's domain, as he likes vodka.

About as strong as I can handle is tequila in a nice margarita! From looking at the Mountain Top web site, it looks like you can buy their Banana daiquiri liquor, and if that’s the case that will be on my list as well!

We got quite a deal on Absolute Vodka in St. Maarten two years ago only FIVE dollars for a full litre! It runs about 28.00 here for 750 ml bottle. We alos got a full litre of Amerato diSarno for about $14.00. You would pay at home that much for the 375ml bottle.

I can't remember exactly...I just know that it is pennys if you go over.

Another great liquor to pick up in Nassau is Nassau Royale -- which seems to be a sweet rum liquer. Being Bahamian produced, it's one you don't have to worry about customs with, too!

it's $2.85 a bottle, if your total is under $10.00 for the tax they waive it, some liquors dont count like baileys irish cream,

I know this is an old thread but I sure would like to know WHERE the Malibu Rum for $8 and Coconut Cruzan rum for $5 was purchased!!!! I assume this is not meant purchased on the ship- so what ports of call were these purchased at???
